This is legitimately scary.

I will pray for her safety. She clearly did nothing wrong.

Look at that mob. What hope for a country like this?

The thing is that when Pakistan was made it was in the eyes of it's founder supposed to be a secular state in 1947.

Problem is he died quickly after independence, Military rulers took power and then later in the 1980s the US let another dictator do whatever he wanted as long as he helped against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Gen. Zia ul-Haq's policy of Islamization has doomed this country for eternity. It pains my parents as Pakistani Christians to see this. They grew up in the 1950s-1970s when things were very secular like this ad and some other pics here:

This poor woman is going to die in this country because she took a sip of water. They're putting her on a list that would prevent her from leaving the country too. What do you say in this situation? Reading the thread a Governor was assassinated because he tried to help her in this case.

An incredibly strong current of fundamentalist religious hatred is long entrenched in the country.

This is a nuclear state which has a consistent history of aiding terrorists, at constant risk of falling to a coup by even worse hard liners. If that happens, expect an almost immediate nuclear war with a first strike against India and Israel. Which would end best case with nearly the entire region being a smoldering radioactive ruins, and worst case engulf the entire planet into a global nuclear war.

It really is unfortunate Jinnah died so early after the country was created but I'd be careful about the photos. The rural areas of Pakistan probably weren't very into those ads back then just like they aren't now. And the cities of Pakistan are still cosmopolitan just like back then. It's the politics of the country that are messed up

Once upon a time muslims used to discover planets, invent painkillers, perform first ever surgeries, write best ever poetry in the world, revolutionize music.

And now they're doing shit like this.

Why?

I mean she drank from someones else's cup. I repeat she drank from someone else's cup.

You can't reasonably expect people not to form a bloodthirsty mob when something crazy like that goes down.

Mosharraf Zaidi @mosharrafzaidi

If legit, this "agreement" is a capitulation of historic proportions.

PM Khan should not have spoken so confidently if he did not have the backing of critical institutions.

And Gen Faez should not have threatened Rizvi & Co if this is what the state was going to sign up to.

Gul Bukhari @GulBukhari

Government caved. Terms of agreement for the protests to be called off:
1. Review petition in SC, Govt will not object.
2. Asia Bibi will be put on the Exit Control List by Govt.
3. Legal action for any deaths that have taken place
4. All those arrested to be freed
#5 is an apology by the protesting group.

From the story from a few days ago, Asia Bibi had some hope after her acquittal. This after 8 years of solitary. She thought she would be free to leave the country. These dudes took it all away.

Hahaha for anyone who thought Imran would change this country. So much for making the country of Jinnah's dreams as he said in his election speeches.
Asia Bibi will probably not leave that country alive.

The entire water thing has its roots in the Indian (Hindu? Someone correct me) caste system, which spread through lots of South Asia including to Muslim Christian and Sikh religious minorities. It's fucking stupid.

As dumb as the caste system situation is, stringing it to a fucking 'blasphemy' law according to fundamentalist Islamic principles is completely off the wall hateful and insane for any time, let alone 21st century when people should honestly know better.

Now this isn't reflective of all Islam, but the Jihadi type hardliners ans their acolytes offering rewards for her murder are absolutely inhuman trash that have no value.

But this is Pakistan?

Pakistan is a relatively new country that was once part of a greater Indian region. They gained Independence in the 40s after WW2, and although they have leaned increasingly Islamic (now to the point where it's more dangerous than ever to be anything else, or even the 'wrong' sect), their ethnic and cultural history indeed includes elements of British occupation and the unjust caste system.

Divide and conquer. An old imperialist trick : pit the occupied peoples against one another by setting up or supporting internal divisions.

At this point its a chicken or egg scenario. The fact is, crazy religious extremists are lashing out and it has to be dealt with.

There are thousands(actually millions) of very dumb, poor, and uneducated folk who are easily brainwashed by some very crazy clerics to do whatever the cleric wants them to do. It's the sad reality of the situation. It's like the scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where the mob is trying to burn the witch. That mob in the movie is the same as these mobs in Pakistan.

The Guardian said:
Christian farm labourer Bibi, a 47-year-old mother of five, was sentenced to hang for blasphemy in 2010. She had angered fellow Muslim farm workers by taking a sip of water from a cup she had fetched for them on a hot day. When they demanded she convert to Islam, she refused, prompting a mob to later allege that she had insulted the prophet Mohammed.

Man... I actually had a bit of hope when it came to Imran Khan. I'm a first generation Pakistani-American. My parents are blaming India for this like they do basically everything bad that happens in the country that they don't want to acknowledge, saying the protesters are being paid off by RAW (Indian intelligence service). Fake news, by which I mean actual nonsense news, is very much a problem there. When I try to point out that the sites they're looking at are shit they say they're looking at "Both sides" of the story so they don't fall for propaganda. They are so full of shit. Pakistan is an irredeemable trash heap of a country and I hate myself for being from there.

I wish that there would be a way to give every single one of them the finger.
Or WORSE, broadcasting on their public tv channels how I drink/spit in a cup of water.

Deeply sorry for Bibi. My thoughts are with you.

It has nothing to do with Islam. It comes from the Indian caste system.

I dunno, I read it as a Christian Woman drinking from a cup destined to be drank from by Muslim (and I'm assuming here Men).

A bit of an odd stance from the TLP, who I read at one point actively campaigned against sectarian violence and groups like the Taliban. Then again, it does seem to be an archetypal 'grassroots movement'.

Either way, a shitty way to treat a woman who only wanted to relieve the thirst of fellow labourers.

Doesn't the caste system have to do with the origin of a person, and their status in the community? Blasphemy implies something more religious.

The article itself says the mob believes "Asia insulted the Prophet Muhammad after she drank the water". This doesn't sound like anything caste system related. Asia doesn't seem to be an untouchable, and she was among her (I guess you could say) co-workers. She seems to have a similar status to them. The only difference is she was Christian.

Yep, education is the best weapon we have against indoctrination into fanatical religious beliefs.

I am speechless. These people threatened to kill judges and army leadership, destroyed people's property, blocked highways, and actually killed and injured others during their violent protesting. Instead of arresting them, an MOU is being signed with them by the government instead. Unbelievable that a women has rotted 8 years in jail for drinking water while these people walk free.
