12 and Clara reunited.
I miss them and love that Capaldi is back to his Doctor look here

I'm rewatching S8 and it's so much better than S11 so far. Thirteen is fine but Capaldi is beyond great in the role and the chemistry with Clara really works, especially in retrospect seeing how they got along better later and knowing that she wasn't about to leave. Ten + Rose, Eleven + Amy, and Twelve + Clara are all the best combos.

Chibnall's DW is reminiscent of RTD's direction but with all the fun and excitement sucked out. Only liked Rosa so far.

I took me a while to warm up to Capaldi but he turned out to be one of my favorite Doctors. Heaven Sent/Hell Bent is my favorite arc of Doctor Who ever and I can't imagine any other Doctor/companion combo pulling that off.

The Mirror reporting the existing rumours that no Christmas episode, but a New Year's Day one. Seems fine, it's a nice tradition but technically a bigger day of TV.

They're also covering the 'filming will be starting Spring 2019 so not ready for autumn, so no series until 2020' which is rubbish if that happens. Way to spoil the momentum.

Chibnall Who feels more New Years than Christmas to me anyway- personally speaking, I loved an episode of Who on the day itself, but it's hard to argue that New Years is a demotion.

I hope that there's nothing in the idea of a 2019 gap year, but a New Year's special followed by a series starting in January 2020 wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Did alright for Sherlock!

It's the unique intensity between those two that makes it work. Closest The Doctor ever got to that previously was 10 and Rose, but even then he managed to control it.

Man, I miss 12 and Clara.

I'm glad to see some 12 + Clara love here, I usually only read people shitting on their seasons. It's probably my favorite nuWho combo and they have the best dialogues, their banter is always delightful.

Father's Day. CG has aged terribly but the core story is one of the best emotional stories Who has ever done imo
Yup, that's what I was going to suggest.

Of course, it would be even better to watch everything!

I was so drunk for last year's Christmas episode I don't really remember what happened except getting a bit weepy at Capaldi's exit.

For me it was the year with Nick Frost, I can't remember anything from that episode. I just know Nick Frost was in it. I watched it but absolutely nothing registered. I must have been wasted.

Will be gutted if no Xmas special.

Turned into a bit of a tradition for me.... Longgg (but fun day), get kids down, put drunk wife to bed, then finally have some peace and quiet for feet up and Dr Who.

New Years day is, generally, the end of festivities.
Work the next day, start to get the house back to normal, early nights all round after the previous nights party.

Jodie and Eccleston are friends, she could be the one to finally coax him back into the role one day

It's hard not to see the bump from Christmas Day as anything other than a downgrade. New Year's Day is a significant TV day, but doesn't have anywhere near the ratings boon Christmas has - to the point where RTD panicked about The End of Time part 2 being there and even considered doing part 2 on boxing day. Hopefully the show finds its niche on that day, though.

The reports coming from within saying it was shifted because Chibnall felt there were no more ideas for Christmas-themed episodes is weird, though. Just do a good, campy episode for all the family and give it a Christmas dressing! Like, Voyage of the Damned, The Runaway Bride, The Husbands of River Song, Doctor Mysterio... loads of these episodes aren't really Christmassy at all, they just slap a bit of Christmas dressing on them. INn fact, it's easier to count the ones that really are about Christmas - just A Christmas Carol, Last Christmas and The Christmas Invasion, really.

I think it's becoming increasingly apparent that Chibnall can't / won't do anything campy. Like, by all accounts Arachnids should have been campy (and for some reason not-Trump of all characters kind of was), but Chibnall seems very keen on keeping things as grounded as possible.

Realistically, you'd think having an intentional 'family unit' in the TARDIS would lend itself to a nice, cosy, heartfelt episode, but I guess the interpersonal character stuff always has a weird...seriousness to it. Which then begs the question what makes a New Year special unique. Something about time I guess.

I'm going to miss Who on Christmas for sure. :/

And taking 2019 off would truly be a bummer, I hope it's not true. These Doctor Who gaps are always bad for the show.

This smells more of they didn't plan for more than 10 episodes, then found the money for an 11th, but it was too late to have it done in time for Christmas.

Doctor Who has had a Christmas slot for thirteen years, so that slot hasn't evaporated for no reason... and a seven-day delay to new year's day is hardly going to help the timeline much anyway.

Maybe Chris Chibnall just hates Christmas

13 and her companions aren't my favourite but it really would have lent itself well to a Christmas special and I was actually more excited for that than anything else this series.

Here's my ranking of all the specials, kind of weird to rank End of Time and Time of the Doctor though.
  1. A Christmas Carol
  2. The Snowmen
  3. Twice Upon a Time
  4. Voyage of the Damned
  5. The Husbands of River Song
  6. Last Christmas
  7. The Time of the Doctor
  8. The Next Doctor
  9. The End of Time
  10. The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe
  11. The Christmas Invasion
  12. The Runaway Bride
  13. The Return of Doctor Mysterio

Donna is my favorite overall companion but 12/Clara at their best are my favorite Doctor/companion combo and I don't think that's changing any time soon. Both of them just elevate every bit of material they're given, regardless of how crappy it is (and with Moffat, that can vary a lot). It was something else to have two legitimately good actors bouncing off of each other for two seasons.

A Christmas Carol is undoubtedly the best one, but discounting regeneration stories (and counting The Christmas Invasion, since that isn't a regeneration story but rather a debut), I'd take every single RTD Christmas Special over the rest of Moffat's. Then again, I'm one of those people with an enormous soft spot for The Runaway Bride, so, y'know. Take that as you will.

The thought of the new showrunner simply throwing his hands up and saying "Nope, there are no new ideas for Christmas episodes" does not fill me with confidence.

Think of something. Big as you like, as subtle as you like. An alien wearing a Santa hat. Psychic tinsel. A portal to another dimension at the bottom of a Christmas present. Jousting match with a novelty candy cane. An advent calendar filled with those teeth Tim Shaw seems so fond of. Team TARDIS as family by sitting around the table for Christmas dinner. You're the showrunner. Think of something!

Tell me about it. This became a family tradition for me starting with The Time of the Doctor and it actually got my mom into the show.

A new showrunner of a fantasy sci fi show can't find any writers to make a Christmas episode? For the first female doctor? Come on...

Has anyone actually read the article? The quote about running out of ideas for Christmas specials came from Moffat, not Chibnall.

I don't know that I see New Year's as a downgrade either, any more than Sundays were a demotion from Saturdays. Different types of programmes suit the different days better- Sherlock wasn't put out on New Year's as a snub, but because it suited the day better. I could very easily see Chibnall's Doctor Who being better-suited to drowsy, hung-over New Year's Day viewing rather than big, loud Christmas Day viewing.

Thought Capaldi had the best run of Christmas specials. Every single one of them is good. Even the Captain Mysterio one, which looked so dumb, ended up being pretty fun.

The worst is by far The End of Time pt 1. Outside of the nice diner convo between Ten and Wilf, it's absolute dreck. And left me spending a good week worried that RTD was going to fuck up Tennant's exit.

Sorry, my bad. I had read the summary on Dark Horizons and misunderstood it was Chibnall. Still bummed though since my family isn't together on New Years.

I've personally found trying to find time to watch Doctor Who on Christmas Day a huge inconvenience. It must be a British thing because I can't think of any other TV shows that do Christmas episodes on Christmas Day.

I've seen a few really negative references to The End of Time recently in this forum. I don't exactly watch that story obsessively again and again, but it's a perfectly good double episode of Doctor Who and, compared to some of the specials which preceded it that year, is great fun to watch.

Did I once again miss the memo? What's so bad about either part of this story?

I think the first part is corny, misguided garbage. The "books of Saxon" prologue and Simm's overacted monologue about everything he wants to eat stand out as particular low points. (note: this is based on my one and only viewing of it from almost 9 years ago. So I haven't obsessively watched it again and again; it was just that bad to stick into my memory ever since!)

I actually like part 2 though. Other than that ridiculous scene of Tennant spinning back and forth between the Master and Rassilon, re-cocking the gun each time lol. But contrary to others, I do like the whole goodbye tour and "I don't want to go." And the four knocks reveal is, I think, the best executed moment in Doctor Who.

It's too bad Capaldi might be my favorite doctor, and also have one of my least favorite endings. Wasn't a fan of much of it, and the cheap attempt at a reunion with him and Clara, who isn't Clara, but is Clara. But isn't. His original ending with her at the diner is one of my top Doctor Who moments.

Caught up with last week's episode. Wasn't a big fan of it, but I love the whole "friends" dynamic going on with The Doctor and the Companions.

And add me to the "End of Time sucked" chorus.

A friend just saw the episodes of this season and she loved rosa. I showed the Vincent and the Doctor and she loved

What other crying more human emotion based episodes can I show her ?
I cried a little at the end of The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe.

It's a silly episode for the most part, but man...

Yeah I haven't seen it in a few years but I remember the main plot with the Master taking over everyone on the planet being absolutely ridiculous and not in a good way. The parts with Ten and Wilf and the final regeneration were great and very emotional though.

The first part of The End of Time is classic RTD in that it's really, really good ideas but rushed to the screen and so not expressed well. Like, the concept that RTD puts forward of time travel and linear time in the Doctor's life - this idea of how despite having a time machine, events he is directly involved with still have a timer on to him - is really great. In the script, the way the sequence where he lands on the Ood planet, realizes the Master is being revived and tries to rush to stop it but is too late because of his own idiotic delaying - that's a really well-written piece that's fascinating in terms of implications for how the Doctor lives his life.... but on screen, it doesn't really come across as anything.

Then there's just stuff like the Master as a hobo... it's a great idea, this pompous character reduced to living on the streets, unable to claw out any other existence because of his face, because he looks and sounds like a murderous ex-PM. But the original versions RTD was pondering, the stuff that would've made it into Torchwood (ie The Master luring a rent boy into a public toilet before killing and eating him) is, again, probably better than the lightly-censored stuff we got. But it's full of these great moments, too. Everybody remembers the scene with Wilf and the Doctor in the cafe (and the later one in the ship) because it's an all-time high, but I love the moments like when the Master realizes the drum beat isn't just him. "It's real!!!", I love the Vinvocci as a benevolent alien influence, etc.

Books of Saxon is obviously flim-flam, but it's needed to get you there. And again, I love elements within that scene. I like the idea that Lucy resists, that she sabotages his revival. It's the classic RTD thing, like I say... underneath the rough edges there are wonderful character beats.

I feel like Last Christmas is getting an extremely short shrift and it's making me sad. I will always love the fact that the episode with Santa Claus in it is probably the darkest Christmas special they've ever done.

It's an episode whose premise is "Hey, make the most of this Christmas because it might be the last with your family" and I love it for it.

"For the end of time itself!" OMGOMGOMGOMG
The scene revealing the narrator to be James B... I mean Rassilon and the Time Lords' return was the most hype moment of the RTD era.

But, whenever I rewatch it, I just skip from the 10-Wilf cafe scene to that to the four knocks to the regeneration.

I'm always way too drunk to remember the christmas specials, and they are all super forgettable anyway.
Matt Smith's exit at Christmas was easily one of my least favourite episodes of all time
