I'm interested in hearing how many of you actually experience the "tetris effect" while dreaming once this game releases.

Not with this specific game, but I've experienced it before. I used to have a job where I worked nights and didn't have a lot to do, and I had a copy of Tetris on my computer, so occasionally I'd just end up playing Tetris for a couple of hours, and then go home and dream about falling blocks.

I'm sold on the game. It's damn good. It really is Lumines x Tetris, and that makes Lumines even better (although I'll definitely stick to Puyo x Tetris for party play).

Only problem is I suck a lot more at Tetris than I do at Lumines lol. And might not get on release just because I'm still slowly working through RDR2 and Hitman 2 is only a few days after.

Haha that's cool. You gonna buy this one?

Oh yeah, I've already got it preordered.

The funny thing is, I probably wouldn't have, (or at least, I probably would have waited for a sale,) but when the first trailer came out right before E3, I had the reveal up on my TV while getting my two-year-old daughter ready to go out. I looked at her at one point and she was completely mesmerized by the lights and colors on the TV. After a moment she started dancing to the music and chattering excited baby talk at the screen.

Anything that gets my kid that excited is going in the shopping cart eventually :D

Drifting is when the screen moves to one side. Its true, I ended up facing my chair on the left side of the room. Its annoying and seems to be game specific. I have lots of games that don't drift.

PS Move on PS3 had the same issue, but the with the crosshair going places.

I had no drift problems with the camera direct in front of me.

Played it last night both via VR and 4K. Had no doubts with it being a Miz game, but I loved it. After playing it on VR, immediately switched over to Rez Area X and did a couple of runs.

Wanted to play only a few minutes but now I can't stop :D

And imo the game looks also very good in VR, after some comments here I thougt it would be unplayable...

Drifting is when the screen moves to one side.
That's the definition I know - but I've seen people use it for other things that's why I wanted clarification.
Anyway the way PSVR HMD tracking works, this should be impossible in any game that uses positional tracking - so if it is indeed happening chances are Tetris doesn't use it, or the user's specific setup blocked it somehow (obscure camera etc.). The game would obviously be playable without positional tracking, so both are possible.

PS Move on PS3 had the same issue, but the with the crosshair going places.
Move has a lot more occlusion problems that lose position tracking, and indeed a fair number of games didn't use it at all, relying on gyros alone which inevitably resulted in drift.

I've been playing Tetris for almost 30 years since the original GameBoy in 1989.

It is rooted in my favorite game of all time spot. I have played it at least once a week for the last 8+ years, and back in 2007 through 2009, I played it every single day. (Tetris Splash was an addiction to try and get in the top ten of the leaderboard, which I obtained about 10 months in, then it was the fight to stay there. I still cleared 40 lines in 49 seconds, which is my personal best.) I purchased a DS for Tetris DS (which is one of my favorite variants), I imported Puyo Puyo Tetris after the debacle that was Tetris Ultimate (I still don't understand how Ubisoft fucked that one up), and then I bought PPT when it came out here in the West to support the game.

I gave that backstory because last night, I zoned out. Like, completely. I ended up playing for about 3 hours, but it felt like 20 minutes. This game, the visuals, the music, how it all ties together? BLISS. I get what they were going for, and for the first time in quite a while, I dreamed about Tetris.

My wife automatically said that she's buying this for me; she wouldn't even let me finish my first game before she said that. I haven't tried it with my PSVR yet, but I'll be doing that tonight.

This!

Good Lord, I've never seen this much kvetching over a price. Game is freaking gorgeous.

Don't wanna pay $36? Then pay $15 and get that shitty "We don't have a clue how to optimize fucking Tetris on the PS4" abomination Ubisoft put out called Tetris Ultimate. Or pay nothing and get Tetris Blitz on your phone and get microtransactioned to death. Puyo Puyo Tetris is the only other decent version we've got for awhile now, but this is a whole new level. I've would have happily paid $60 based on what I've played in the demo. Reward good game development by actually BUYING games. "I'll wait 'til it's $19.99/$9.99/on PS+ for $0.00 ensures we won't see another game like this, and only encourages lazy garbage like what Ubi put out.
Tetris is my most played game on Switch (200 hours) and this one is much much better imo (and Puyo Puyo Tetris is no slouch). Puyo Puyo Tetris cost me 40 dollars at launch and it's been worth every penny.

I just got done playing the demo and found it to be an incredible satisfying experience. I don't have VR and $40 seems pretty steep for Tetris but damn I may still get it anyway.

Haven't had chance to play yet but I'm hyped beyond belief. Like the poster above, Tetris is my favourite game ever and I've been playing it pretty consistently for 30 years. Playing Tetris on the original GB at launch was mind bending. Can't wait to play this one. Getting on it tonight!

Started playing the demo last night and my quick 10 minute try ended up being around 90 minutes (on a basic ps4). Really got into it. The way the music slowly kicks in as you start completing lines is fantastic, as is the music in general. Only concern is how some of the effects get in the way of making out what the next block was going. I only got up to speed level 9, but it definitely made it even more challenging than it needed,

Ok people's terminology is all over the place on internet (I've seen this word used to describe at least 3 completely different things) - when you say "drift", can you describe what you're actually talking about?

As far as preferences go - HDR pop on the right panel is great, and 2d mode hides the IQ problems somewhat better (they're still there to be clear, just not as noticeable). But the backgrounds and audio work better in VR, I can see myself playing both.
The games default position will slowly drift to the left or right, so that sitting in my sofa looking straight ahead I have to crane my neck slightly to see the center of the screen. This gets worse as time goes on, to the point where I have to shift my entire body around. It's such a weird thing.

There's a guy right now on Twitch that calls himself a modern Tetris expert and he's shown me two things:

1 - despite playing for two decades, I suck

and

2 - you can use Zone mode before it's completely full. I had no idea.

At least comes the vocal theme from the 1st level?
Yes, it does. All of the soundtrack sampler audio is suffixed with "Radio Edit" but honestly I think they account for the entire songs. With all 4 songs you can play in the demo, the music appears to be split into 3 sections and they're evenly distributed into 3rds based on the number of lines you need to clear. (Ex. On Beginner, 1-9, 10-19, 20-30. On Expert 1-15, 16-31, 32-48, On Marathon 1-49, 50-99, 100-150.) Once you hit 150 lines in endless, the tail of the last part of the song just loops forever.

The Soundtrack version of the 1st Trailer / 1st Level theme, "Connected (Yours Forever)" contains all 3 parts of the song that you hear in game. Since the game just loops them when you're working through a section, I think the radio edits from the Soundtrack sampler is the best we might get.

------
I played for another 2 or 3 hours yesterday (lost track of time) this time in VR. I like the default size of the matrix in VR, but always zoom it on TV. I wish there was a separate option in the options menu to have the larger matrix only in 2D mode. In that respect, I feel like the defaults were made for VR. But I'm one of those people that should buy a larger TV because some recent games tend to have really tiny subtitles as if you're supposed to be playing on a computer monitor. (Waiting until LG sells OLEDS with ATSC 3.0 tuners in the US next year before upgrading to a larger TV)
I had already pre-ordered the game day 1, but I can't wait to try all of the other songs and stages.

I have games like Red Dead 2 and Diablo Switch available to me and all I can actually think about playing right now is this demo.

I've beaten the Journey three stage loop like 9 times. I'm terrible at Tetris but this has definitely got a hold on me.

This is probably going to replace Rez Infinite as my chill out game. I already pre-ordered a couple of weeks ago.

I guess I'm the only person in this thread who's bugged by the pause in gameplay after each stage in Journey mode. I wish this was handled like Lumines or even Tetris DS.

I posted about this earlier too.

It's actually irritating. The whole thing is billed as this zen-like experience, but nothing takes me out of the game like the loading between areas and particle effects covering up my stack.

cool, I'm not the only one.

It's almost a dealbreaker for me, honestly. I guess it's due to loading, but it's a huge negative imo. Wish they could have figured out a way to make Journey a fully seamless, uninterrupted experience.

umm yeah... report back if you survive the VR trip, Instant Vintage.

I didn't want to jump in VR because I had to work today.

I don't have to work tomorrow.

The last game I played fully in VR was Thumper, and I literally lost an entire day. Like, I put it on at like 8:30 and then I took it off and it was 7 in the evening.

This will be worse. Better, but worse.

I never imagined my dream puzzle game could be a mix of Tetris (which I've barely touched in my life) and Lumines (the reason why I still own PS handheld systems). My lack of time with the first makes me a terrible player, but as I'm in awe with the audio and visuals (pure Mizuguchi DNA) I just want to try again and take songs to the next level. Style over substance is a criticism thrown around here and it's understandable. What achieves to me, however, is elevating that classic content through an overload of stylish, inspired choices. Presentation is the star of the show, without detracting from the value still inherent to Tetris.

It's my surprise of the year, even with no VR device within my reach. 35/40€ seems more than a fair price for a work of this level.

I also had this problem, but I was able to correct it by doing a couple things. Changing the camera height can help, it might possibly prevent a reflective surface from affecting the camera. Second would be to make sure they are no random reflective surface around. The biggest issue for me was, no joke, an unopened Amiibo package - fixed most my problem simply by moving that. It never occurred to me that something that small could be the problem.

Also, before turning on the headset, if you give it a gentle shake, then set it on a flat surface to power it up -- that seems to keep the gyros functioning best. After that became my ritual, I stopped having drift issues.

This wasn't really on my radar but after playing the demo, this is a day one purchase (wish i bought this instead of RDR2). Loved what i played. I had to delete the demo since i kept playing it over and over. In a case like this, i'd rather wait for the full game.

Will this game come to other platforms?
Depends on who paid to have it made I suppose. It's definitely getting great impressions in non-VR mode so there's no reason it wouldn't work on other platforms minus the VR. I'd love to have this on the Switch. Puzzle games are just way more fun and accessible to me on a handheld.

I already played the demo for 5 hours. I'll almost certainly put in over 100 in the final game. I paid much more money for Spider-Man and was done with that after about 15 hours. This is a much much better value to me.

Do you have rumble turned off system-wide in the PS4 settings?

THANK YOU! I feel like an absolute fool. I deactivated rumble for a specific reason months ago and completely forgot I never turned it back on. This is a "Is it plugged in" tech support situation.

That being said the game was fun and I was getting into it. Having the music intensify along with the background is pretty cool. I prefer playing close up. The default view seems way too small.

Is it weird that I only want this game for the music? I mean I can only judge for the demo but this is electronic music in a game done right (unlike Child of Eden). Stage 2 and 3 are fucking jams.

I'm gonna strongly disagree with the "style over substance" criticism.

Now I'm not great at Tetris, but I have been playing it since the original Gameboy. Music has always been intrinsically linked to the game. Not just because those old melodies are unforgettable. Tetris, the game itself, moves at a rhythm that is intrinsic to the gameplay. The pieces have always fallen with a rhythmic stepping to them, rather than a smooth drop. The higher the level, the faster the rhythm.

If the demo is anything to go by, Tetris Effect understands this about Tetris better than any other version I've seen. The music and visuals have been designed to heighten the intensity of the tightening rhythm. The stages in the demo levels have also been chosen to ramp up the intensity as you progress.

I like this game's style, and I'm of the opinion that style can even be substance. But this Tetris game's "style" commits the inexcusable sin of actually getting in the way of the gameplay.

The particle effects sometimes block my view of the stack or the Next queue, and I have to consciously slow down to reassess the field when it happens. The pause to load the next area in Journey mode is a really jarring break in the action. Both of those things are pretty good at taking my mind right out of the game.

For a game that touts a zen-like "in-the-zone" experience as its core mission, the fact that its bells and whistles directly get in the way of accomplishing that idea isn't a minor flaw.

Finally sat down to play the demo. Can you play anymore than the first three levels? (The Deep, Pharaoh's Code, Ritual Passion). Really enjoying the game so far, the music and the way the controller vibrates to the beats is amazing. Really stylish game. I think I'll definitely be picking it up when it's out fully.

I downloaded the demo last night. Played through the Journey mode in VR 3 times in a row and immediately went straight into the PS Store and preordered it (thankfully I still had the PSVR anniversary $10 credit). MAN I cannot wait for this thing to drop next week!

Why is everyone saying $40 is expensive? Almost every release of Tetris has been at least $40, especially if you factor in inflation. The small number of cheap downloadable ones are complete pieces of shit.

And this is a game with maybe the most modes yet and a story mode on top of the visuals and VR. What exactly is the problem here?

You can play marathon, which utilizes a 4th skin. There's also a mystery mode (throws weird change-ups at you to fuck you up). Other than that, nothing else...yet. They hinted at the fact that every weekend there will be a new mode to post scores on. They didnt say if we'd get one during the demo though.
