As opposed to spending just $300 to play your legally purchased copy of the game on the actual hardware without the bugs and glitches?
Given how bad AA on Nintendo games are and how they look on my LG Oled I rather play them on 4k, thank you very much. I got 2 Switches already though and 1 ready to dump the game (hacked)

With how hard it is to play this game on original hardware unless you're a collector, and how much display technology has changed since this game came out, it sure is a relief to know I'll have access to it without having to track down one of Nintendo's niche consoles!

If Nintendo would just make this game available easily and digitally I wouldn't have to go out and pirate it.
This is gold :D

I don't get why people are complaining about the framerate. That's perfectly fine and playable. I say this as a PC main who plays at upwards of 100+fps.

I've got a Switch and Mario Odyssey.

At the current rate of progress, in under a year playing it on Yuzu will give me a better playing experience than the real hardware. For future playthroughs that's great.

This thread is embarrassing, but great to see mods actually taking action this time.

phew, was worried a game this niche wasn't going to get preserved
This isn't how it works. Of course the bigger names will attract most of the attention, and people will make tons of videos on their progress. But an emulator isn't just there to run one game or homebrew, it's (ideally) a universal program to emulate them all. One good reason why emulator devs focus on first-party titles, is they make the most use of the hardware, so if you manage to emulate them well, it's likely the progress will benefit a lot of other titles. (Of course, as we can see with Dolphin, which is in a very mature state for an emulator, there are also weird games that do really crazy stuff with the hardware, and figuring out these quirks - and thus gaining an even better understanding of the underlying hardware - can take many many years)

That people mock the preservation argument really only shows their ignorance to me. Sure, the biggest titles will likely get remastered and remade for as long as they make money (and it's arguable how much those remaster are indicative of the original experience either). But most other titles are forgotten, after a while the console is no longer manufactured, and after even longer the hardware will become almost impossible to get if you aren't willing to pay tons of money for rare collectors items.
Emulation keeps game accessible.

I swear i read about the bootrom exploit or something being in Nvidia shield hardware & already known.
I believe you're thinking of a second majorish exploit, the one that a member of the Reswitched team sorta reported that caused the scene to blow up with drama for a little while. That whole thing was complicated (I'm using kindas and sortas because I don't remember the details - Vena can probably correct me on a few things), but it did largely use documented behavior, yes. However, the initial, very crucial bug that broke everything open was first discovered after the Switch's release.

Very interesting. And I guess it makes sense when you hear their explanations. Still, didn't Citra really struggle with performance until they switched to Vulkan? I could have sworn it was Vulkan that flipped the switch on that (although maybe it was just a coincidence). If this has a similar development, this thing could be really performant in the future.

It doesn't need to be about preservation or piracy - I can buy the game and play it on PC because I prefer that experience (because of resolution enhancements, mods, cheats etc).

Some people get really mad about that too. There was a thread about Linkle or Zelda as playable character in BotW and it got super dumb.

The progress in Yuzu over the past few months has been really impressive. (well, it probably was equally impressive before that, but less visible)

Nobody can tell me that someone creating an emulator for a system that hasn't even been out for more than 2 years cares at all about preservation.
Back in 2011 the MAME team added support for the CAVE CV1000 arcade system. Not long after they removed it again the company CAVE asked them to remove it again as some of the games on that platform were merely a year old and they wanted to re-release some of their other games on the system. So the MAME team removed it again. And around 5 years later they added them again. That seems like a sensible thing to do.

Preservation is an important benefit to emulation. However:
  1. It isn't the only benefit.
  2. The improvements made to emulating popular games will likely mean smaller games also perform better as more hardware features are implemented.
  3. Getting popular games to work brings attention which only helps fund further progress.
Is that really hard to understand?

This is really impressive. I would love to replay Xenoblade 2 in an acceptable resolution on this some day.

Is Yuzu the only switch emulator? What happened with CEMU, is it only Wii U?
RyujiNX is the other significant one, and interestingly enough it used to have a consistent lead on the compatibility milestones achieved and performances until the begin of August.
Then summer vacations came, Yuzu gained the edge and since then RyujiNX has barely seen any significant update while Yuzu is progressing at neck breaking speed.

CEMU is doing fine, but that's a Wii U emulator and an entirely separate entity.

Essentially what happened is a ton of documentation on the GBA got leaked prior to the release of the system. This allowed basically emulation creators to make an emulation, though admittedly a bit blind, and have a functioning emulator prior to the release of the system and games for said system. Most modern Emulators do try to avoid making use of this, unless released post-modern of the system, largely due to legal implications with using these resources.

I seem to recall Nintendo was pretty pissed about this and was a lot more careful going forward. Admittedly, something similar did happen with the Switch sometime after release, though the emulators that are out there are largely reverse engineering everything, rather than making use of the leaks (as this could land them into legal trouble). Plus also helps Switch has a number of the same calls and functions that carried over from the 3DS, so definitely helped out YUZU in this case (as it's technically a fork of Citra).

Anyways, it's really impressive what Yuzu has accomplished in such little time. RyujiNX also has made some impressive progress as well. Really insane.
Thanks. Then it makes sense.

This is great news! I'll be buying a Switch sooner or later, but it would be great to play my games on pc at higher resolution and framerate as well.

I'm really curious how these guys managed to emulate the switch so fast?

Dumping it yourself using a Switch. It does require homebrew and some tinkering.

Is it just a matter of connecting your Switch to your PC? I mean, I'm sure it's not that simple, but no special cartridge reader is needed?

If so then that's pretty cool. Maybe 4K BotW will be within reach for me at some point.

No, it's just trolling that misses the point as usual. Like all the comments "Too soon, they should wait".
What emulation achieves is not meaningful only for the specific moment it gets published, but especially in the long term.

And given how long it will take to actually get things right, no emulator should be purposefully delayed exclusively to favor corporate interest.

It's not that simple no, you need to hack your Switch so it'll allow for custom apps. One will allow you to dump the game from the cartridge to the SD card, and you can do whatever you want from there on out. I'm not entirely sure about the exact details, but someone else most likely knows how exactly it works.

So you think programmers should consider the feelings of corporations before working on projects that are completely legal? This is a big milestone, and should be celebrated. I don't care much about emulation (At least, when it comes to me personally using emulators), but it's important these things are done. If you can't see the bigger picture then you should take a step back.

Corporations do not care about you or anything you care about. Including the history of the medium.

This is both legal, and a huge positive for everyone else. Talented programmers shouldn't hold back progress to protect the feelings of entities only interested in complete control and their own back pockets.

Bayonetta 3 on yuzu might end up running better than Bayonetta 2 does on cemu at this rate when it eventually comes out, I think.
I feel like by summer most big games will run about as good as switch does if not better. With Dolphin and Cemu devs now pitching in it's bound to go fast.

I'm really looking forward to playing XC2 on this thing. After playing it on Switch I wonder how good can the game look at high resolutions...

Amazing the progress of Yuzu. Keep up the work!
