Hahahahahaha

What an absolute crock of shit saying that you never have to pay money for SFV characters

I guess capcom should just deactivate the ability to pay for them because everyone's getting them for free yeah
Was pretty true 2016-2017. Got every season 1 and 2 character with the exception of 3 of them for free.

If you include costumes, doesn't DOA have like 600 dollars worth of DLC ? It has several season passes lol.
and all of them are COSTUMES as in stuff that doesn't affect gameplay.

if you buy the game then the only DLC characters you need to buy are Mai and Naotora Li. Not to mention you get a pretty decent offering of costumes for each character just from going into the options menu and pressing L1 + R1 + L2 + R2

sure you can grind 800 hours or whatever it is and get them for free, but at the point it's just better to think of them as paid. SFV should be top of the list.
This thread is talking about buying the game AT LAUNCH. When amassing a shit ton of FM took playing story, survival, and trials...and logging in weekly for free FM. You know. Normal parts of fighting games. There was no grind until 2018.

I might have misunderstood something, but why is the base roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate listed as 82? I believe it should be 74 (or 76 if counting Pokemon Trainer as 3), with DLC bringing the count to 80/82.

Funny how BlazBlue Tag has the best cost for DLC characters outside of free DLC like Arms

Playing that dogass survival mode and story mode to get currency is a normal part of fighting games

Tbh fighting games should stop charging got new characters since they are part of the gameplay, instead charge for costume, stages, colors, music...etc since they don't affect gameplay

Modern fighting games don't offer any way to get money to buy DLC characters in game. Story and easy survival take maybe 5 and 8 minutes with loading respectively. The fact of the matter is that they were easy to do and available to everyone. So. :)

Like I get that it used to be a lot easier to gain the currency, but that still doesn't mean that the characters were "basically free". Most people don't want to grind away doing awful modes just to get characters. They weren't free for most users.

Easy survival is both a waste of time and the reward is paltry; you're saying you only have to beat this boring as fuck fight gauntlet with half the cast. Like, come on. Most people are not masochists, so the characters are not all free.

This is actually really new to me. Now braindead story and survival modes are an exercise in masochism to complete that the majority of players simply can't handle. Is the video-game purchasing community this stupid? I'm going to sit down and ponder for a bit. This is a lot for me to process.

I mean

Capcom is the one who assumed most people would not get these characters for free

Not me

SFV's base game is not really just 16 characters for $60 anymore though. They updated the digital version to include S1 which basically became the new vanilla on PSN. Also, Arcade Edition including S1 and S2 sort of replaced Vanilla at retail, too. Afaik it released for like 40€ MSRP.

It has already been added to OP, but I bought 1 out of the 3 season passes with money and still own almost all characters, while owning enough Fight Money to potentially unlock the ones I'm missing, I just don't want to.

I've played SFV for about 280 hours and didn't unlock all characters. I made a bit over 1 million FM which I spend on 5 chars, and a few stages. Since I only play online and hate grinding single player bullshit I'm not getting nearly enough FM to buy all characters.

Also I ended up buying a season pass for season 1 still although I already had purchased 3 characters with fight money because there was no option to buy the remaining 3 chars with real money. Essentially I bought 3 chars from season 1 twice.

The whole system is fucked and I'd rather spend 30 bucks getting all stages, all chars and an additional costume instead without have to worry about this stupid fight money system. Nobody will ever convince me a new character is worth 6 bucks when the original game released with more chars for less money and additional development time went into all the modes too.

Also I got SFV on PC for 35 bucks on day 1 but omg chars need to cost 6 bucks each right?

Do you actually think they took avenues for receiving FM away in 2018 because...people weren't playing story and survival mode?

I think they realized that those people who were grinding survival were dedicated enough to part with their money, not that the majority of players were receiving the game's cast at no cost.

It's not a popular genre, they're all dying, as should be.

Can't hear you over the sound of the smash tsunami coming to sell a bazilion of copies

You get a new song too because every char has their own theme. No new stage though although if you don't spend fight money on characters then you can get all new stages for free anyway.

And this is why I don't think OP needs to say 60 bucks for SF5.

And there is no way a regular SF5 player can unlock more than a season of characters now with the changes

It would be so great that if you could just pay 30 to get chars and costumes for each char included. Man, I wish SFV did that.

Before the previous generation, all of these games would have gotten yearly updates which required you to buy a whole new game to get those extra 2-6 characters and stay competitive. If you don't care about that, you can still buy just one title per series and generation, with the added bonus of still getting to play against those with all DLC.

Also, again, fighting game characters cost a fortune to make.

It's almost like fighters are a niche genre so the DLC has to be pricey to pay for the costs of the characters + free game updates.

I mean the bigger franchises are all selling 2+ mils that's hardly niche, i can understand smaller anime games which sell 100k~500k tops doing that but i don't think it's justifiable for the bigger ones such Tekken, SF, DBFZ, smash and nrs games, i think those games can make more than enough profit selling costumes and other decorative things such as stages, music....etc while offering characters for free.

Now THIS is ridiculous. I'm glad Capcom stopped playing around with that shit and announces seasons in full with Marvel Infinite (RIP)/SF post-S2.

I don't know how Sakurai asked people to buy a pass today without saying literally anything about who's in it. Not even character silhouettes. It's actually more hype inducing to know who's in than not.
Sakurai has earned the consumer's trust, plus his games fill like full packages to start with, the last smash with DLC super delivered, and he said they arent being worked on until the game is done and in our hands. How can we not throw money at this man

FGs being niche is just a meme now, in a generation where at least 6(will be 8 by the end of the year) fighting games sold more than 1 million copies.

The genre require continuous support from the devs, and as a for profit company you can't justify continuous support with no returns.

Season passes transparency isn't for series loyalists willing to blindly throw their money regardless of what they'd get. It's for those complaining about why character X made it into the game over character Y when ever a new smash character is revealed, it's hard to miss them if you ever been in a Smash thread. Imagine how much louder those will be if they gambled with the season pass in hope for character Y.

If you can't see why someone placing a product for sale without saying what the product contains isn't bad business, there's nothing I can say to convince you otherwise. And characters not being completed =/ them not having been chosen and put into some form of pre-production. It takes a long time to make just 1 character. The only reason Sakurai said that was so Nintendo wouldn't be accused of holding back content from the main game/maintain some mystery about who's in the pass for future Nintendo Directs.

The Gundam VS series came to laugh at this list.

Gundam Extreme VS Full Boost was $80-ish out the gate with 98 characters and had 34 DLC characters at $4 a pop (being generous with the JP exchange rate). So about $216-220.

Gundam Versus was $60 and had 95 character with 26 DLC units at $5 a pop. So about $190.

Another one for the list:

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round
Physical:40$ // Digital:30$ : 34 characters

+ 1 DLC character at 6 $ and 1 DLC character at 7$

OR
Free with 4 characters, each character at 4$ outside of the 2 above. Also rotation of 2 temporarily free characters outside of the 4 base ones.

Had this model before KI btw.

So 43$ for 36 characters.

Edit: oh and it had season passes, but for costumes. You got the dlc characters in the season pass when it released though.

Games like Tekken 7, MKX and I2 are packed with content too.

People who complained about FM during season 1/2 only have themselves to blame for this.
