So now that we know the full roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate how do you think the newcomers we got stack up to previous games?

Which game had your favorites?

To be fair I'm counting Wii U/3DS and it's DLC separate.

Brawl, by far. My mind was blown when I saw Sonic and Snake together.

You know, I started to say Smash 4, but the answer is probably Brawl - especially if you're gonna call DLC "its own thing". Sonic the Hedgehog was monumental enough. But also Snake. Wario. Lucario. Olimar. Dedede. Diddy Kong. Yeah, it's Brawl all the way actually.

Easily Brawl in terms of WHO the actual characters were.

Smash 4 in terms of best implemented newcomers, if that makes sense.

While Brawl had star power, I think Smash 4 was a really uniquely interesting cast across all of its newcomers.

All of them introduced atleast 2-3 would be favourites or character wants, so it's a hard choice

I'll go WiiU just for bringing Mega Man with a pretty fun and true to character moveset.

I kinda liked the days before the glut of third-party reps.

Really it's Melee for me because the inclusion of Marth and Roy almost certainly helped get the Fire Emblem games localized.

Brawl. Sure it got rid of Mewtwo but every single pick was a winner, and not a single clone in sight.

Brawl had a crazy amount of newcomers, all which are my favorites. Definitely takes the cake.

I would vote for Smash Wii U if you combine DLC.

It's awfully close between it and Brawl, but base 4. Bowser Jr., Greninja, Little Mac, Shulk, and Villager are some of the more fun fighters to play, Duck Hunt and Wii Fit Trainer were hilarious picks that still worked, and Mega Man and Pac-Man > Sonic and Snake, for me.

4 has Greninja who I played through the entirety of Smash 4's life. Despite being hit with nerfs every single patch. So for personal picks, probably 4. But Brawl is definitely monumental in terms of third parties and general new comers.

If we were counting 4's base roster and DLC together then I'd have gone with that, but since we're not it's gotta be Brawl.

Bowser, Peach, Ganondorf, Zelda, Mewtwo, Marth, Mr. Game & Watch

vs.

Wario, Pit, King Dedede, Meta Knight, Diddy Kong, Sonic, Snake, Pokemon Trainer, Wolf, Ike

Darn, I think I voted for Melee too quickly, but Bowser though!

Brawl, easily. At the time, seeing concepts like Pokemon Trainer, the idea of any crossover characters let alone fuckin' Snake, giving us Sonic vs. Mario, on top of filling out a lot of other franchises.

I'd generally go Brawl > 4 + DLC > Melee > Ultimate.

Brawl was really good.
  • Diddy, Wario, DDD, and Meta Knight were much needed characters
  • We got a new non-clone FE character before it went out of style
  • Olimar was great
  • ROB was a fantastic retro/WTF pick
  • Snake and Sonic added 3rd parties
  • Pokemon Trainer was an inspired choice
  • Pit was brought back, and ready to go for Uprising

The game haven't even came out yet, and posters are including Smash 4's DLC. Let's review this a year from now.

Brawl was the game who opened the floodgates to third party characters, though, so that's a tough act to follow.

F) Can't Decide

Literally every iteration has a miracle choice-pick from me.

Melee had f'ing Mewtwo. Back in 2001, when Pokemon was THE defacto franchise, seeing such a cool, powerful, mysterious, evil(?), and rare Pokemon as a playable character? Felt like a dream come true I didn't know I wanted. And this was BEFORE silly stuff like wishlists. Left my Gamecube on over night to unlock him!

Then Brawl brought out the big guns. Not only opening the can for 3rd-party crossovers with Snake and mf'ing SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, LONG-TIME RIVAL MASCOT TO NINTENDO... but also bringing the 3-in-1 cool-as-fuck Pokemon Trainer. AKA the protagonist Red stand-in AKA a playable Charizard / Squirtle. I still remember the morning of, waking up to that Dojo page, and being flabbergasted.

Wii U really brought out my fanboy wishes though. Y'know how we all make Christmas lists right? Hopeful that our dream roster gets selected by some miracle chance. Well, this round of newcomers really clinched it for me. We had Shulk with his kick-ass Monado from the rainfall RPG itself; Little Mac, the old school pink jumpsuit boxer with the moves that grooves; and Ryu, the original fighting game master bringing his cool voice and cooler special attacks. Those had all been characters from my fantasies -- nerdy ones, too, where I picture how the trailer plays out, complete with musical BG. And the cherry on top? MOTHER FUCKIN' CLOUD STRIFE. GAMEFAQS POLL COME TO LIFE.

But man oh man... Ultimate really wants to steal the show. SIMON BELMONT. RIDLEY. Characters I never ever ever ever thought would see the light of day! I almost want to give the award to this alone, but the reality is... we ain't done yet! DLC is still a'coming.

Truth be told, I've gotten pretty much everyone I've ever wanted throughout the years. I'm quite content with whatever new characters show up. No longer is it necessary to pine for a missing piece.

Of course, let's not forget the one that started it all: 64; and its legacy of bringing together my favorites. DK. Pikachu. Mario. And most of all, the Hero of Hyrule. The wielder of Evil's Bane. LINK. Just playing as Link, fighting Mario, was a thing of beauty. Playing as Fox out of the Arwing, or controlling Yoshi without Mario once again, or learning who Ness and Cpt. Falcon were proper. It was all so special, and really cemented a life-long love of the franchise.

I'm going with Wii U/3DS (and I'm including DLC characters). With characters like Shulk and Cloud and then unique ones like Wii Fit Trainer and Villager plus classics like Mega Man and Pac-Man. It was a really cool and unique set of newcomers.

Brawl overall is still the best mainly because it was the first one to break the third party mold, and to me that game started and established pre-release Smash hype.

Smash 4 took what that did and blew it out the water, but Brawl was the one that made me feel like anyone could really join Smash eventually.

To go with my post above. I still don't think anything topped this reveal. Literally out of nowhere, and no leaks or any speculation to ruin the fun. Snake coming after an avalanche of newcomers still makes this the best Smash reveal trailer overall imo. Although not as flarey or flashy, the hype was through the fucking roof. It's a shame that Brawl itself came up short gameplay wise, but got damn at this trailer and the newcomers it brought to the series.

Would have said Brawl, and there are good ones, but Little Mac, Wii Fit Trainer, Duck Hunt Dog, Villager...

Those are too good. WiiU/3DS

I'm counting Bayo etc. In that too. Not sure why that's differentiated.

I live in a giant bucket.
Brawl was the perfect blend of "took long enough" dream fighters (Diddy, Dedede, Meta Knight, Wario, etc.), current faces of beloved franchises (Ike, Lucas, Toon Link, Lucario), and the advent of third-party guests (Snake and Sonic). Barring the loss of Mewtwo, that roster was perfect in my eyes. Olimar FTW

That said, it's not an easy fight when counting Smash 4's DLC. Cloud was insane.

My love for these trollish yet viable picks is what puts Smash WiiU at the top. Fear the volley balls and exploding cans of beans.
