nVidia's backdoor allowed them to dump debug symbols and code. It's not like they did this blind, they basically had the guidebook because nVidia is incompetent.
I dunno about that, isn't the Switch/Nvidia bug that lead to it being hacked well known? Nintendo just didn't do much about it, looking at the Switch's very simple OS, i think the system was a tad rushed, i think this is a case where the "both sides are bad" argument can actually be used, Nvidia knew about the bug & Nintendo in a hurry didn't fix it.

With how hard it is to play this game on original hardware unless you're a collector, and how much display technology has changed since this game came out, it sure is a relief to know I'll have access to it without having to track down one of Nintendo's niche consoles!

If Nintendo would just make this game available easily and digitally I wouldn't have to go out and pirate it.
Twenty years ago no one would have thought Konami would exit videogame business yet here we are. Twenty years into the future Nintendo might be gone for good.

hate it when a couple thousand people can jump through some hoops to play a massively successful game in higher resolutions

really gets me steamed and makes me enjoy the game less

Man I love Switch exclusives, but I hate the fact that they're locked to such a slow device.

Anything that lets us escape the mediocrity of 30fps releases is a plus in my book. I never got into the DLC for BotW; I think I'll just wait for a definitive play through once this matures.

No it was not known before launch of the Switch.

The first bug bounty was last year in June for it.

I'm still sitting on my Switch copies of Mario Odyessy, Splatoon 2, and Bayonetta 2 because my Switch just looks bad on my OLED due to the low resolution and I knew due to the passion of the Nintendo community I'd be able to play them in 4k in a few years. I can wait, I have a huge backlog on other systems.

My mind is blown that a current gen console is being emulated this well this quickly. Has the og xbox even been emulated on PC yet?

Odyssey is 60 FPS though. As pretty much all Nintendo exclusives on Switch besides Breath of the Wild.

Pretty damn impressive technical achievement. For right now this doesn't have a lot of appeal to me beyond piracy, and it isn't exactly ideal for that either, but it's good to know that this will be really solid by the time I need it to be.

Not a record though. I remember GBA was emulatef before it even came out. They literally emulated the Yoshi's Story E3 tech demo with zero actual games out.

Playable
"Fully playable" in emulation terms means that you can launch the game and actually go through it in its entirety.
It has nothing to do with the experience being polished, glitch-free or even remotely enjoyable.

I'm confused by the tone in here. Are people buying the preservation narrative for a best-selling Switch game from a year ago or am I just behind on a meme? Is this allowed on ERA?

I'm not trying to bait a ban. I'm honestly wondering why this is okay, if anyone can update me on the politics of this.

Edit: Thank you to the person below for their response.

Jesus Christ. Every single time.

For a start "it is allowed" because it's completely legal.
And contrarily to a misguided popular belief technically you aren't even under any legal obligation to own original hardware to play a game you are emulating as far as the emulator itself doesn't make use of copyrighted code (i.e. BIOS dumping).

Now, if the game you are running on that emulator is a pirated copy, that's piracy, but that has nothing to do with emulation itself, and that applies even if you play the same game on the original hardware, anyway.

I won't comment on your tone because I don't want to derail this. Thank you very much for explaining things.

The argument is Nintendo can and might go under so this is okay. Personally I have gotten out of pirating games and have mostly been doing randomizers. I do think Nintendo should endorse randomizers for their online service.

Fully playable is an overstatement. Extremely poor performance and graphical glitches galore. Still a long way to go.

What it means to you is frankly irrelevant.
There is a widely accepted general consensus on what the term means.

Its pretty relevant when next to nobody is going to play it at 20 fps and full of graphical artifacts. They'll check it for about 15 minutes, dick around, and turn it off until its actually really playable. Sorry if that upsets you for some reason.

Look forward to playing this again @ 4k with a DS4! Emulation keeps fighting the good fight.

Well, we are lucky then the headline is about what the emulator accomplished and not about about you sticking with it for more than 15 minutes and enjoying it.

What a noxious meme. Mocking preservation efforts when there are companies actively working against it should be bannable.

Fucking LOL. Preservation is important. However, you have to be naive as hell to ignore context. The game isn't even a year old on a popular system at the start of it's life. This instance isnt about preservation and we all know it.

So why mock preservation in general? Every preservation and emulation thread is full of disingenuously conflating it with piracy. This should be about an accomplishment about getting an emulator up to a very functional level. Nobody here should be celebrating someone stealing the game - people should be dumping their own software.

Yeah, it's about playing a game I bought day 1 for a system I bought day 1 at a resolution that it couldn't run day 1.
