I wonder what Lucasfilms would be valued at right now on the open market.

It's been SIX years?! Nah. Nahhh.

But seriously, they probably got their investment back in the first two movies with all the extra income the franchise brought. It's all gravy now.

That was basically a steal for Disney.

I don't know why they have to shelve Obi-wan, they don't need a billion for every movie.

Disney also acquired ILM and Skywalker Sound in the acquisition, which was a major coup as well. The Lucasfilm sale was a steal for anyone that bought it.

And good on Kennedy for bringing in the money and delivering the goods like she has her whole career. Her track record is so fucking strong.

Well, I'm glad this huge conglomerate that's gobbling up franchises left and right is making a fortune.

Amazing deal by Iger and Disney. And I've liked or loved every Star Wars movie that has come out since so works for me.

4 billion was such a low amount but I got the feeling Lucas just wanted to pawn it off as fast as possible.

Disney buying Lucasfilm is what made me into a Star Wars fan, so I'm really this happened.

Curious, why weren't you before? Was it the new movies that brought you in or something else about Disney owning them?
I had seen them before and while I liked them, I guess I didn't really consider himself a fan. With Disney buying them, it made me go back to them and really get into it and then I started watch Clone Wars and reading the comics.

Star Wars would've stayed a franchise that has movies that I like but never revisit if Disney hadn't bought them. Now I can't get enough Star Wars.

Well deserved, they've been doing an amazing job. Much better than Lucas with the prequels and his endless fiddling with the OT.

Wait, I mean, Disney's sequel trilogy is a failure. A disaster! Its critical acclaim, financial success, and overwhelming popularity with audiences are all lies. Fire Kathleen Kennedy for tanking the Star Wars franchise!

Gross revenue isn't profit. They still haven't broken even based on film revenues. Merch might have brought them up to even. Either way, it seems likely there will be tremendous profits ahead as they keep cranking out movies. Episode 9 will be crucial.

They made back that 4 billion way earlier than now... That's just in film revenue. Merchandising has ALWAYS been where the real money is made and they probably did that back when TFA released.

4 billion seemed pretty paltry back then so to me it was inevitable they would recoup it and then some.

The investment was a guaranteed means of profit.

They could have maintained or increased the notoriety of the series if Iger didn't force annual installments.

Those aren't high-margin businesses. I'm actually surprised that Disney hasn't Papa-EA'd them yet.
They did lay off a lot of people at the beginning, though.

They made back their 4 billion ages ago, not long after force awakens actually.

Can't believe Lucas sold it so cheap.

I can only speak for myself but I enjoy the Kylo Ren story/character more than anything else in the previous 6 SW movies.
we couldn't be more opposites. i think kylo ren is a giant dweeb and can't take him seriously as a major bad guy. i honestly don't really care where they go with his story in the next movie.

Him being a dweeb fanboy is kind of the whole point though.

He is basically the SW version of the alt-right 20 something Neo-Nazi's in America. The real bad guys tend to be nerdy sort of dweeby guys, not comic book villains.

Movies are really good at what they are trying to do and clearly they have an audience, but personally the movies aren't really for me. Happy people get movies that they like though and it seems to be making money for the people involved so hey, good deal.

I just don't like the setup of "we're back to last Jedi in space" because it feels kinda boring to me. I was half and half on ep 7, but 8 didn't really do much with my favorite characters(Finn and Poe) and focused on stuff that I didn't care about. So...eh. I'm pretty neutral on Rey, but I imagine I'd be neutral on most protagonists since they generally aren't the most fun part of Star Wars.

So they spent zero money making the movies, comics , toys and other products?

It was just buying Lucasfilms and everything else got made automatically?
