As an excerpt on the obituary reads...

Although he took little time away from work, Mario loved hunting, fishing, his airplane, a good joke, the color red, great Italian food (with no cheese!), an excellent cigar and his view of Puget Sound. His passion was figuring out how to do things in new and better ways, which often included drawing things on the backs of napkins and placemats. The innovations he brought to the construction industry that are still seen today attest to his remarkable creativity. While he was the inspiration for the name of Nintendo's 'Super Mario' from when they were tenants in his business park in the 1970's, he always ducked the notoriety and wanted to be known instead for what he accomplished in his life. Indeed, for generations of his family to come, and for the people who had a chance to know him well, his impact will remain ever present.

Seems disrespectful of the man's wishes to know him primarily as the inspiration for Mario's name when he wanted to be known for all his accomplishments in life.

From what I recall he was an accomplished real estate mogul. Funny how you can become best known for something that wasn't even intentional. Rest in peace.

that was my first impression reading the OP as well. "I don't want to be known as the guy they got the name Mario from. I did other important stuff." video game message board: "Mario is dead".

I just report the news. While the man's wishes were clear, one can never control the public's perception. That's why I, without posting the full obit, included the excerpt about what he enjoyed, his wishes, and his work in the construction biz. It's the reason why I also used the man's full name and linked to the source directly, not some random gaming site.

From the Wikipedia article for Mario:

"According to a widely circulated story, during localization of Donkey Kongfor American audiences, Nintendo of America's warehouse landlord Mario Segale confronted then-president Minoru Arakawa, demanding back rent. Following a heated argument in which the Nintendo employees eventually convinced Segale he would be paid, they opted to name the character in the game Mario after him."

No! I'm so sorry to hear that!

Rest in peace, Mr. Mario Segale

We are just been nice and saying goodbye to him here. There is nothing wrong with that.

Well I had never seen any picture of him and he's very different from what I imagined. I'm so stupid.
RIP

Isn't that like almost to the exact day the date in which the NES launched in NYC back in 1985??? Just a weird coincidence.

I think the "F" meme in response to the passing of a real person is in bad taste.

Rest in peace.

it's a strange thing to watch the founding fathers of this industry (and in this case, the people who were around and inspired them even in little ways like the name of Jumpman) growing old and leaving us. We've never not had them, and the hours grow shorter and shorter.

RIP.

RIP Mario. He changed videogame history right then and there without even knowing it. We would live in a different world if his parents would've given him a different name.

Being the inspiration for one of the biggest icons ever is a pretty huge life accomplishment if you ask me.
Personally, I'd be tickled pink.

R.I.P Mario.

I want to know more about that story. How do you go from putting the squeeze on for rent money to them liking you enough to name a character after you? Not like Nintendo had any inkling at the time that he'd be the face of the franchise for the next 35 years.

Oh man, RIP.

If I remember correctly, didn't he look back on his namesake being used with total ambivalence?

Yeah they are all getting very old now. In another decade there won't be many left. Even guys like Yu Suzuki are quite old now.

Aww, sad how many IRL Marios we've lost between Seagal, Lou Albano and Bob Hoskins

The story of Mario's naming after Segale was finally 100% confirmed my Miyamoto a couple of years ago too, after only having been unofficial and never confirmed for 30+ years.
