Sen. Joe Donnelly from Indiana awkwardly touted minority staff members during a debate Tuesday night, seeming to suggest they succeeded despite their race or ethnicity.

"Our state director is Indian-American, but he does an amazing job," he said. "Our director of all constituent services, she's African-American, but she does an even more incredible job than you can ever imagine."

First the birthright citizenship quote, now this. We need to get racists like this out of office. It's not even hidden anymore, it's right in our face. :(

If you have to be asked about minority staff, you are already fucked.

It's possible he was trying to make a point they were excelling despite the challenges that come with being a minority and just worded it poorly.

I certainly would hope so anyway.

If you listen to the whole part he clearly intended for it to be an "and" instead of a but. The last part of his statement after he says that clues you in to his intention.

"I misspoke. I meant to say 'and' instead of 'but.' That would have communicated what I have tried to do my entire life: that I make a habit to seek out and promote people of color for both my campaign and official staff," Donnelly said.

He could've saved himself a lot of trouble then by switching over a year ago, instead of staying Dem in a Trump-friendly state and campaigning in a tight race, after voting against ACA repeal, voting against the tax plan, voting against Kavanaugh, and so on and so on.

Donnelly and Manchin would have been Republicans 20 years ago, but they're still far, far left from today's Republican party.

I feel sick for Dems in Indiana having to vote for this guy... But please vote for him now and then primary him.

Already early voted for him, and he's better than Braun, but damn he sucks. I want Mayor Pete to primary him or run for governor. His campaign would really inspire Beto-like buzz and get a fuckton of the younger people in this state to actually vote I think.

Donnelly is trying to pander to the current electorate with bullshit like this instead of expanding it.

A lot of villainization here for a guy who was trying to promote the value of diversity on his team. The "but" seems to an indicator that their race has no effect on the quality of their work, not that they are an exception to other minorities. The video indicates he is referring to people who would doubt that minorities are capable of doing the jobs he is describing, and while "and" would be a lot less ambiguous, his use of but is to declare that their performance is not tied to race.

Also I feel the need to point out that it is the right wing media that was cited as reporting and giving this exposure, another case of fake outrage like with James Gunn. They are playing with your purity tests to build up animosity towards a dem so he loses his seat. Keep in mind he voted against repealing Obamacare, something no republican would do in such a deep red state.

Maybe he meant "they perform admirably even as working in politics in a deep red state under the rule of a president who encourages racial violence not daily but hourly"

Neo-liberal defence force? He's socialist-leaning with a bunch of socially conservative positions, a lot more common than the inverse these days.

Tolerate him now, primary him for his next term.

No way a blue guy in a red state like Indiana is going to get primaried. People would much rather the incumbent Dem look strong and keep the seat than dare put anyone progressive or not just a blue Republican in that spot and potentially lose to someone further right.

I actually posted the clip of him saying this the other night in the thread about people in these states voting and I got ganged up on pretty hard for even hinting that I'd vote for not Joe Donnelly. Dude is a complete turd and I wish more than anything I had a better option for Senator.

The fact that Republicans are trying to spread this nothing is the grossest part about it.

This is how I heard it. Clearly he said it in a tin-eared way, but he was trying to praise his staff for both its diversity and its overall high quality. Replace "but" with "and" and we're all good here.

It could have and should have been worded differently but he's done worse. I'm glad I don't live in Indiana so I don't have to vote for him at least.

Many don't care who he is, only his affiliation.
Because his affiliation leads to more action than his pandering rhetoric?

I mean feel free to vote for his opponent who is garbage in every way Donnelly is and more.

Fake edit: here's the full quote and his defense
After highlighting the two staffers, Donnelly continued: "It isn't their race or their religion, it's the incredible person that they are. But at the same time, they have to have a chance. They have to have an opportunity, and that's my responsibility. And I've done it in every office I've had, and I've done it in every campaign I've had, because my campaigns and our Senate office should reflect the face of Indiana."
In a statement Wednesday, Donnelly said he'd used the wrong word.
"I misspoke," he said. "I meant to say 'and' instead of 'but.' That would have communicated what I have tried to do my entire life: that I make a habit to seek out and promote people of color for both my campaign and official staff."

Yep. If you watch the debate, he was following the Libertarian candidate who claimed she "doesn't see race" and quoted MLK Jr while saying diversity efforts are racist.

Donnelly isn't a great speaker, but it's clear his point was that these are amazing people who might have been ignored because of their skin color.

This is nothing, and is being spread by Republicans to create problems for Donnelly.

Don't fall for it.

Let's take bets on how many people even saw the full quote which clears it up a lot, let alone the answer before him or his defense.

Well, I actually take back my snarky comment. I'm happy he corrected himself rather than just relying on others to speak 'what he meant' for him. It seems he understands what he said wrong and why, and didn't intend for it to come out like that.

It's incredible that between all the answers given to that question on stage, Donnelly is the one being called racist. By Donald Trump Jr. no less.

This is just ridiculous.

Fair enough. I still think a lot of you would explain that we need to vote for him if he were a convicted serial killer, but in this situation I am incorrect in my condemnation.
