Mod edit. Do not derail this thread with generalizations on emulation. This thread is to discuss the progress being made on this current emulator and nothing more.

man this emulator has seen some crazy fast improvement in such a short time. I can see it being pretty much almost perfect for SMO before Summber 2019

I think I have a different definition of 'fully playable' and I'm very much used to the emulator scene.

With how hard it is to play this game on original hardware unless you're a collector, and how much display technology has changed since this game came out, it sure is a relief to know I'll have access to it without having to track down one of Nintendo's niche consoles!

If Nintendo would just make this game available easily and digitally I wouldn't have to go out and pirate it.

"Fully playable" in emulation terms means that it can be played from start to finish.

Dolphin defines playable as 'runs well', this runs so sluggish it's nowhere near a speed I'd call playable, or even fun to play.

I was under the impression thay playable just means that it's beatable even if it has bugs.

Haven't watched the video yet.

While it might not have unbeatable roadblocks, the state of the emulation is still not at a level that's preferable to emulate it. Playable usually means you can play the game as normal with a few missing effects here and there or the quality not being top notch.

Amazing. When the Switch life cycle is over, this emulator is gonna be perfect. It will be great to just transfer all my Switch software to it and retire the physical hardware.

Trying to equate emulation with piracy is against ERA's rules, fyi.

what a bunch of smart ass assholes in this thread...

Edit** the sarcasm is annoying. Why not just say what you want to say so that people can have a meaningful discussion.

For a emulator this young, it's getting great performance while rendering almost everything correctly. If this continues at this rate you'll probably see it being almost perfect by mid-2019 for SMO

Imagine being such a corporate apologist you get upset because a piece of plastic is being emulated.

Wait, wasn't this thing running Odyssey with wacky colors/missing textures and a lot of issues juts a few weeks ago?

Edit. Ah yeah, the thread got full quickly of Nintendo fans angry at this

So it took one year to become completely playable. I'm going to make a completely uneducated guess and say another year to become perfect, with enhancements (high res etc).

Feels like "fully playable" this early in an emulator's life usually equates to around 2 fps. I'm incredibly impressed. Then again, Citra is incredibly well done too. So I shouldn't be that surprised by their ability.

Wow that was fast. I wonder how much the architecture, being on an already existing hardware that is openly developed for otherwise, lent to the speed of development.

There's never been a mainstream console that was on a full open hardware platform like that before, afaik. Even OG Xbox had lots of custom silicon.

Incredible work. Very impressive of the developers! Seeing how switch games can look in 4k soon will be incredible!

Too bad about the posters in this thread that are snarky /sarcastically trolling though.

This does have have the advantage that the switch is based on off the shelf hardware with a publicly understood ISA, and a somewhat documented GPU architecture.

...why would the system still being in the market relevant, like, at all?

Because a lot of people use emulators as a way to easily pirate games.

Yes we know emulation =/= piracy but let's not pretend it's not a big reason people like to use them.

For sure. And without actually trying it, I'm assuming they're running Vulkan right out of the bat? That certainly has to help in the performance department (being as all other emulators have gotten significant boosts after switching to that). Still, it's the most impressive emulator progress I've ever seen.
