Have you never seen an anime?

To be fair blonde hair and blue eyes is usually short hand for white in anime.

I mean this is more a reflection of a lack of black protagonists in general than on Smash. Or do you expect Smash to invent characters? Rodin and Dalsim are side chars and not worth a main pick just because of their skin colour imo.

This has been an industry-wide issue for decades and as long everyone including Nintendo steps it up you won't see that many black fighters in Smash.
That's the point that is being made. No one is saying Smash is at fault, they're saying Smash highlights the issue.

This is less of a problem with Smash and more of a problem with the gaming industry in general. How many black or brown characters are there in games that are actually important, and not just side characters? I can't think of too many.

Chad Warden called this out years ago

Chad Daddy da Prophet

Bless Chad Warden. He said no one wanted to play a Zelda game with a dildo controller and look what Nintendo isn't selling anymore.

Dude saw the future of gaming.

For the person who said Black Baron, that would not work because Black Baron is not actually black. Yep. Now Anarchy Reigns' Blacker Baron, that would work because he is actually black, hence his name. Also yup.

I really do personally dislike the sentiment of Ganondorf being "green." I've always thought it was cool that, while somewhat caricature-esque, the Gerudos represented this blend of Black and Brown culture.

Most of Smash's roster isn't even humanoid to have race. The biggest non white in Nintendo's roster is Ganondorf and he's in (but doesn't count for some reason).

It's hard to be upset with Sakurai and his team when there simply aren't that many relevant Nintendo characters that are minorities AND big enough for Smash. If there was a sea of characters to pick from and Sakurai and his team was choosing them I'd get it. When the best choices people can give are minor characters in their own series (often with bigger characters also missing) it's hard to be mad they weren't chosen.

The finger needs to be pointed at nintendo, capcom, square-enix, sega, konami, and namco-bandai for simply not having enough minority characters in major roles over the past 30 years. Course then you get into the vicious cycle that if their games aren't big they don't get into smash.

I think there being practically no minority characters in Smash speaks more to the history of Nintendo, its Japanese origins, and most of its iconic franchises being born out of the 80s and 90s.

I'm not saying that's an acceptable or excusable thing, but when you're making a fighting game celebrating the history of a company it's generally going to reflect the diversity or lack thereof that it has.

I also think the easier solution going forward would be to press Nintendo to create games series' with more diverse casts and protagonists that Smash can then draw from.

Other characters have been floated ITT. Also we literally just got a Piranha Plant as a fighter.
Piranha Plant is a design that's been around for so long it can easily be called iconic. Just like mushrooms or question mark blocks.
We just need more black main protagonists in popular games and this Smash-issue will solve itself. Considering Nintendo mostly includes their own characters in Smash if it's not some 3rd party character who has been around for 20+ years it's up to Nintendo to develop some game where that's the case.
Including second/third fiddle charcters as fighters because they are black isn't something I'd want. I'd like black main protagonists in good games that then get includied in Smash because they deserved it.

Ganondorf should somewhat count as he's gerudo and Gerudo are very clearly dark skinned and not just Fantasy Dark.

Still doesn't help though when he's one of the evilest characters in the roster.

I still say Id want Springman over Twintelle because he's incredibly sexually attractive to me, but Twintelle is equally deserving of a spot.

Also the "Theyre Japanese" isnt an excuse.

There are 45 human-ish characters in the game and three of them have darker skins as alts. Which really isn't great.

Nintendo needs more variety in their characters for sure. And they did a decent job actually with ARMS. It would just be nice if some of those characters made it into Smash.

Rinkah and Benny from Fates too.
Yea there is them a well plus Niles, Gray and Flavia but only Basilio and Flavia have actual story importance(Gray may as well but i haven't played Echoes long enough to see if he still matters after the start) where i could see Sakurai picking one of them. I just went with Basilio cause the last thing a new FE reps needs is a sword and i guess Claude from 3 Houses would be possible.

Isn't this less of an issue with Smash, and more of an issue with Games in general? I mean Smash is taking the most iconic and popular characters from the entire industry and bringing them together and there isn't an egregious omission in my opinion (arguments can be made, but I don't think any are obvious).

Games in general need more variety among the main characters, which would also help in Smash. Until then, I do think they should try and get some of the ones mentioned in this thread.
