Really really really hope we get a XC2 rep - it's my second favorite game on the system after BotW, I think (maybe tied with sonic mania). Pyra would be awesome.
Beyond that, I'm still hoping we somehow find a way to get Master Chief and some Rare rep (Banjo?).

I am just now remembering how insane Smash 4 DLC was. We got fucking Bayo, Cloud, and Ryu... All 3rd party (I guess Bayo is technically 2nd party at this point lol). The newcomers like Corinne. Then returning characters in Lucas, Mewtwo, and Roy. I think there is some great potential here and that Geno is not off the cards at all. Smash 4 is proof that DLC character reveals can be just as good as any pre-release, minus the high budget CG reveals which will never stop being awesome.
Seeing people flipout and say they aren't buying DLC because they might all be Piranha Plant type characters is hilarious though. But I understand the sentiment of avoiding passes all together, I'm willing to bet there will still be a bundle for them all after they release, and of course you will have the option of purchasing only the ones you like.
That gave me the impression that they decided the DLC characters around the same time as the base roster. Otherwise Rex would have been an ideal candidate for a DLC character, but is instead just a Mii costume.
I think she was, but that was several months ago. Yeah, maybe she's just busy with real work.

I misunderstood the video or some user. Even so, offering the costume and music implies that none of the 5 DLC characters is from Xc2.

I'm not sure why people think a Rex Mii Costume automatically means he can't be DLC. Smash 4 DLC included Mii Costumes for Link, Damus, Fox and Captain Falcon. One of the new Mii Costumes was even Inklings, and they're clearly playable.
The character is obviously Mythra with music from the Golden County.

Piranha Plant is in the same boat as Jigglypuff, ROB, Wii Fit Trainer and the likes. Those unexpected characters that are hated by a large portion of the fanbase because they're not whatever flavour of the day they would've preferred instead.
I think the thing that bugs me about Piranha Plant is that it isn't even a SPECIFIC piranha plant. It's not Petey Piranha, it's not the one from Yoshi's Island, it's just stock Piranha Plant. It'd be like making Goomba a character, which is a bit odd.
I'm annoyed that it's the final character they announced - if they had announced it midway through and ended with Simon and Richter, the announcement wouldn't bug me nearly as much.
Same reason any character is hyped: Some kind of personal attachment to the character.

Seems like an easy pick. Sora is the only guy I can think of that's big enough to cause a splash.
