Could Sony afford to take this risk? They don't exactly have the financial backing of Microsoft.

Agreed, Game Pass, Netflix and other services, are a deep money hole that requires a LOT of investment in content. Netflix sacrificed short term profit and revenue for growth and made back the losses later, heck they spend $6 billion on original content every year. Microsoft investors don't mind this sacrifice, hence the Linkedin $26 Billion buyout.

Setting up something like GP takes mad investment and years of making. It also takes technical know-how. Not sure anyone but MS can pull it off at the moment.

I am intrigued by what this service can offer in regards to new monetization opportunities for single player games. Suddenly high quality episodic single player content like Hitman tried to do makes sense as prestige content to advertise the service ala Netflix.

Such single player content could also rely on the guaranteed revenue stream for development and not run out midway leaving players with a half finished story due to poor retail sales of the second episode or something like that. Suddenly it's worth doing for third parties as well, but then those games become exclusives because only Xbox offers that sort of business model.

In a world where single player seems increasingly on the way out at many companies I welcome any alternative to a market where almost everything with a big budget is multiplayer because I am less of a gamer at that point.

So what makes you think it would?

Did Netflix become a rental service where movies would be there for a week and then go?

A week is an extreme example. I have already explained as much in this thread. I don't think it would, I'm speculating how this can be exploited by the window of game avaialibility being gradually reduced through the years the service will be active.

Game Pass is the best idea to come from this generation. I said this when it was first announced, but Sony and Nintendo need to copy this idea asap. playing Sony or Nintendo games day one on a subscription would be insane.
They won't copy it because their games actually sell.

It may happen with third parties but it's far less likely to happen with MS own published games and Gamepass's current worth at the moment is certainly the first party offerings. Netflix for example at the moment is hugely relying on it's own funded content and has slowly transitioned away from third party licensing due to the costs and unreliability long term. It makes absolutely makes no sense for MS removing their own games for similar reasons when the worth of the service is dependent on the reliability of being able to play titles on the service at any time a person subscribes and to consistently grow the library to reach a larger diversity of audiences.

Xbox exclusives such as Forza Horizon 4, Sea of Thieves, and State of Decay have all sold very well despite launching day one on GamePass.
These games aren't anywhere close to Nintendo's or Sony's big hits saleswise. Hell Spiderman or Mario Kart (which is a Remaster) outsell all of them combined.

Do we have to compare sales across all major studios? Can't we just celebrate the awesomeness of Game Pass and hope Sony and Nintendo adopt something similar?

I just activated my trial to get access to Ninja Gaiden Black, which is otherwise unavailable in Australia.
I have now downloaded about 6 other games onto the console before even starting it up. Help.

I think, until Gamepass can reach 10s of million of subscriber is where Sony or Nintendo might even look at this service model. as of right now, multiple Sony and Nintendo games can reach 10 millions copy sold on its own. it would be crazy for Sony and Nintendo to throw that sales away for $120 a year revenue, which had to be shared for third parties as well.

I can see Sony maybe having higher tier PS+ where it include PS Now and 1 or 2 brand new game every month in rotation or something. like for example Days Gone would be free for 1 month for PS++ subscriber.

Sony and Nintendo can't afford to dive deep into this business. Do you know how much money Netflix spends on original content every year? It's over $6 Billion per year. They would need to have constant original content from their current studios or publisher/studio acquisitions.

That is Netflix's main business though, they don't sell consoles or accessories... well last I heard.
Even if Sony/Nintendo don't launch exclusives, a PS Now type selection of older titles that regularly rotates would be really cool. An instant collection, kinda like the old PS+ "Instant Collection" :)

Execution is key. Let's see how they evolve it with officially announcing Gamepass for pc, creating more content and combining it with streaming. They have got a lot of work to do.

Not being funny but... I don't see how when you consider there are very few games that have actually released on the Windows Store.

If you want a subscription service like this on the PC then Origin access is the way to go. It's got more games than gamepass does and it's quite a bit cheaper:

https://www.origin.com/irl/en-us/store/origin-access

If you want a subscription where you are given a similar amount of titles over the course of the year but you actually end up owning them permanently then there's humble monthly.

I don't understand why in it's current form you would be fascinated by the idea of gamepass on the PC when you consider the alternatives. But hey, horses for courses.

All you need to know of the Game Pass success and potential is Microsoft has brought gaming out from living in the Windows Team's basement to the big boy table, is investing heavily in them, Nadella talks more about gaming's future than Windows future in investor calls and the major Microsoft investors have gone from loudly asking Microsoft to sell Xbox to silently supporting him.

Follow the money, not the rhetoric. A company that was adverse to adding more heads has suddenly exploded with game developers and will be adding more.

Edit: read all responses in the thread. Not going to quote.

- Content is king. Microsoft isn't king of content. They don't dispute that. It's why there's been acquisitions and Nadella has warned of a profitability drop due to "strategic acquisitions" upcoming.

- Sony and Nintendo don't have to do anything...but they could. Game Pass hasn't cannibalized other game sales. It's only added a revenue stream. Not replaced one stream with another. Service isn't for everyone. Many traditional hardcore gamers will continue to buy games traditionally. Subscription services have a market...especially amongst Millenials as they get older and increase income. This is a long term play.

Gears 4, Halo 5, Halo MCC, Ori, Sunset OD, Quantum Break, Cuphead, Killer Instict are below Nintendo/Sony worst games? How is this not trolling? Hyperbolic nonsense and objectively false (critical reception and sales).
yeah Ori, Cuphead and Sunset are pretty great. They're still miles below Sony/Nintendo's best, but you are right. Those ones are pretty good games

I am sure we would be far more fair to Xbox, if MS ever publishes the actual numbers concerning their success.

As it is, they can't tell us how well Gamepass is selling, without accidentally revealing Xb1 sales numbers indirectly.
What? They don't have to do that. Lol. they don't owe you or anyone else who isn't some sort of investor that information...and it is obvious their Investors are pretty happy with the current state of the Xbox business and it will only continue to grow all thanks to games, hardware and initiatives and services like GP. The CEO is current doing really well.

Oh, I agree that Origin access is miles ahead currently. Don't Understand why I can't be fascinated by Gamepass tho.

If EA returns to their former pc glory with decent SimCity, Sims and most importantly C&C games; count me in!

I wonder what number of subs they need to actually be profitable. Netflix still isn't making money and they have access to nearly every potential customer in the world. I know MS is planning on streaming but then there is the added cost building servers with Xbox hardware capabilities.

I own these games already.. :P

Owning games is overrated, everyone knows that games play better when you play them via a subscription :)

But seriously, I doubt EA will return to their former glory in that sense and come out with modern PC games like Sim City and C&C better than the alternatives that already exist. Which is why, ironically, most of the value in origin access lies in the collection of 3rd party games it allows you to play for such a low price.

I was more referring to the fact that Microsoft only seems to publish their PC only and worst performing games on Steam, while EA hasn't releasing anything on Steam in over 5 years. The writer clearly had no clue what he was talking about because they'd struggle to pick two publishers less relevant to Steam's success.

Yes I know, that was my point as well. My comment was an effort to be sarcastic ;)

But you said they weren't as good at Sony or Nintendo's worst games in your previous post?

Ori is one of the best games this generation, and can happily sit up there with Sony and Nintendo's best.

Regardless, everyone knows that Xbox has been running on a shoestring this generation, with minimal investment in to first party. Anyone who has been following movements this year should know this likely isn't going to be the case next-gen.

Ah, the future of gaming, where similarly to how TV streaming is going, every main publisher will have it's own streaming subscription service and if you want to play all the latest games you're gonna have to fork out for all of them. I'm not sure why people champion that future so much, blinded by their religious fever for their 'side' to win at all costs, including screwing themselves over. Don't say you weren't warned.

Just see how Netflix is about to lose most of it's Disney stuff as Disney want a piece of the pie. Unlike with TV though, streaming games won't be easy to pirate for the odd one you don't wish to pay a sub for.
If I went a month without watching a single show on Netflix I would cancel my sub and then sub to another service that had a better offering, and then who knows, I might switch back a couple months later when good stuff returns. Same thing with games: Say I want to play the next Halo for a month, then the following month Titanfall 3 comes out day 1 on EA's subscription service so I switch. It still ends up being cheaper than buying every game and you have access to a bunch of games you never would have tried otherwise.

I subbed last month and I'll probably keep it this month - just for Forza Horizon 4, which I've barely had chance to play.

Picking up a new TV in the next few weeks, can get an X1X for 399 with fh4 and f7 which I can sell. Need a UHD blu ray anyway, what's the player like on X1X are the blacks crushed in HDR?

Anyway, they've probably got me subbing even if I barely use it.

Embarrassingly cringey comment. Get some fresh air.
Look, I do not have any intention to take sides in this. I am sure many people are genuinely happy with their Gamepass experience.

It just crosses the line when the conversation switched to how the more financially robust competitors should somehow imitate MS. It is almost the same kind of silliness as demanding PS5 to be a Hybrid portable.

People are allowed to celebrate any way they like, happiness is good. Keep at it. But don't be reaching too far with your conclusions.

I don't agree with the comments saying MS is the only company that can do a GP service. Sony is already doing pretty much the same thing with PS Now, they just need to improve it a bit.

I wonder if Microsoft sees a good opportunity to buy EA now that EA is worth $27 Billion in market cap. Both companies align very well in terms of strategy and vision of the gaming industry, so both companies are a natural fit. So Microsoft may pay $30-35 billion

X9JxRVD.png

MS buying EA would be a very bad thing. A lot of people would lose their job in the process and sales of their games would drop since their games would be on fewer platforms.

I am sure we would be far more fair to Xbox, if MS ever publishes the actual numbers concerning their success.

As it is, they can't tell us how well Gamepass is selling, without accidentally revealing Xb1 sales numbers indirectly.

I'm sorry but this post is sad for multiple reasons. One, you're basically confirming that a good chunk of people, including you apparently, willfully post ignorant comments in Xbox threads. You also make it seem like sales should be the deciding factor in whether or not these people troll something. Not only is this silly but it's just not true. People wouldn't suddenly be posting ignorant comments about RDR2 or Spider-Man if we didn't know about their sales. In fact we don't know the exact sales numbers for these games and yet the forum has still remained largely positive about them, and for good reason.

All you really did is prove my point with this post.

Shhh logic and reasonable thinking isn't allowed in this thread.

Game Pass is amazing. I majorly upgraded to a new computer a few months ago, and in five months for games I have:

hit up my backlog

bought four new games

subscribed to Game Pass

and that's it. Yes, even the Play Anywhere games on Game Pass are enough for me, Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 4, and State of Decay 2 are all games I still think about buying (but instead I keep deciding to just stick with the subscription), while some of the other games like Snake Pass, Super Lucky's Tale, the Disney games, and Zoo Tycoon are games I've had fun playing a little of here and there with my girlfriend. If I had an actual Xbox, I can't even imagine needing anything but Game Pass.

Although to be fair, I still haven't paid anything for it, because I just keep redeeming free months from Microsoft Rewards, which I'm sure Microsoft doesn't mind but it does mean that I'm not technically paying for the subscription, I guess

Basically I just can't wait until they actually have Game Pass for PC, instead of this gray area that just a few games currently exist in

If you consider Xbox division to also be the entirety of Microsoft, I am not sure what to tell you.

Are we going to go back in time to the "warchest" discussions again? That's old forum talk, do we have to bring that back here?
Your comment obviously implied that. You said MS competitors were financially more robust than they are and that's clearly wrong.

I think Nintendo online will end up being a game pass, as Nintendo move onto more recent consoles (N64 then gamecube etc)

The way switch games are still selling MK8, zelda, mario etc makes no sense financially for them to include switch

A lot of Nintendo games age well due to their graphic style and focus on gameplay (versus realistic high production values)

Why are you putting Sony and Nintendo first party as on the same level?

There's an abyss in quality between them, even the best Sony outputs is far from being the industry's best like most of what Nintendo produces.

Also, say what you want about Ms 1st party, but the "trifecta" remains the best on their respective genres years after release.

He probably means in terms of the division itself. Playstation and Nintendo as divisions are way better off currently than Xbox. When looking at just the gaming division. Xbox is finally in the past year or so been digging it's way back market share wise, and that would be thanks to some exclusive deals like PUBG, XBox one X, and Gamepass subs.

When looking at what Playstation and Nintendo generate when looking at how much hardware, and first party game sales, it shows how better off each one of those gaming divisions are than xbox. While xbox is doing better it's not in the same tier yet as those other two in terms of what their games are generating, and how many consoles they are selling.

Man, reading some of you is embarrasing. It's like you hold a grudge against MS ever since 2013.

OT: As a PS4 and Switch owner only, Gamepass has made me seriously consider getting an Xbox One. The fact that I'll have access to virtually all exclusives from MS this gen for 10 bucks a month is a pretty good proposition.

MS is building all of this and with their upcoming streaming games service, they are future proofing themselves pretty good. One can only hope Sony isn't far behind in implementing some of the services MS is offering.

2013? That's being generous. Some still hold grudges dating back decades!

I am sure we would be far more fair to Xbox, if MS ever publishes the actual numbers concerning their success.

Revealing actual numbers makes Game Pass more appealing to you? Kind of an odd way to correlate enjoyment and value but each to their own.

Origin Premiere is not cheaper, it is 50% more expensive and that is the service that allows it's small handful of new titles. I am tempted to try it out though, I did have the regular service a couple of years ago.
