What a peculiar viewpoint.

So...what happens if Microsoft starts putting out 85-95 Metacritic games next gen? Although Forza Horizon is already well in that range.

What happens to your theory there? You think GamePass exists because of the Metacritic of their first party games in the last couple of years? Because even Gears and Halo are still in the 80s.
Think they were referring to budget differences and/or multiplayer vs. single player offerings. Although, you are right that quality has nothing to do with why Sony wouldn't put their games on a service like this day one.

Sony already heavily discounts their first party stuff within six months and has a lot of it on PS+ by the 18 month mark so I don't think they are that opposed to making money via heavy discounted goods as people assume. I think if they were to copy a service it'd be closer to EA Access, put stuff on as soon as they'd regularly discount it.

It'll really take off once (if) they add streaming option. To pick out a game and start playing immediately will be when it takes off.

It's a neat service but I became bored of it faster than I did with the old ass NES games on the Switch online, which is worrying. If they really went hard in on adding old original XBOX and 360 games that I liked I could see coming back from time to time.

uhh, it's perfectly fine to like certain games and doesn't like other games, but I wouldn't start worrying the future of a service just base on my own gaming taste.

There are numbers (enough to compute a ballpark estimate) in the article, but I haven't been able to track down the source to determine the parameters:

if EA Access give numbers, that's an easy option. Otherwise, one can probably assume "Xbox One gamers in the US, UK, Germany, and France" are consistent enough with RoW (and hugely dominate the sample anyway).

So, let's say there are 38M X1 gamers * 8% = ~3M Gamepass subs.

8% ... 3m subs, ok that makes sense, thanks.

I'm an old that would rather play old games than samey shootbangers/realistic murder sims. I recognize that. I said I'd probably dip in if they had a month with some good deep cut OXBOX and 360 games that fit my taste.

I think they have a really good idea here, which is why I bothered to try it out. The games just aren't for me. I either had them on other platforms or they were multiplayer only or they just weren't for me. If you like these games at all it's an incredible value.

More rental subs for everyone!

I like getting cheap/free subs so I can play something like FH4 until I'm bored with it but I'm not going to keep it going. Eventually it turns into a huge waste of money unless you're constantly using it.
... Just like any subscription service
My Sirius subscription is a huge waste of money but for when I'm in the car I want the OPTION to listen to Howard. That's how they getcha

I can only assume you never actually used OnLive. It was a great idea, but just like PS Now, its execution was awful due to the limitations of the streaming tech used. Although what I did like about OnLive was the slick integrated interface.
I did use Onlive. It worked great for me. I was playing games that had no business on a netbook.

Since the start of this gen. 5 years and still lacking them. Buying 3 studios 5 years into this gen. by the time we see games from those studios, this gen might be over.

Umm...this gen is just about over. Next-gen consoles will be here in 2020, which is 14 months away. Phil Spencer has done a fantastic job repairing the damage of 2013 and positioning Xbox for next-gen. Things are looking up for Xbox.

As both Microsoft and EA continue their strategic business tango with one another, companies such as Valve are left in the middle to fret about Microsoft or EA pulling their games from Steam to prioritize their very similar distribution platforms.

Hahahaha what the hell is this??

Im always confused why people seem to think that just because Microsoft bought some studios that it means the games the studios will put out will be amazing?

Like, im hopeful and want them to be but i'll wait till I see anything before getting excited.

Why? Playground Games and Ninja Theory have consistently proved they are capable of creating amazing games, there's nothing strange about people expecting nothing but great stuff from them.
The other studios will certainly have to prove themselves, if MS nurture their talents and give them enough creative freedom we could see some good games from them.

At the very least they can start adding more value to first party. It might take some time for those studios to mature and make really incredible games but at the very least it's more games guaranteed on Game Pass.

Man, reading some of you is embarrasing. It's like you hold a grudge against MS ever since 2013.

OT: As a PS4 and Switch owner only, Gamepass has made me seriously consider getting an Xbox One. The fact that I'll have access to virtually all exclusives from MS this gen for 10 bucks a month is a pretty good proposition.

MS is building all of this and with their upcoming streaming games service, they are future proofing themselves pretty good. One can only hope Sony isn't far behind in implementing some of the services MS is offering.

Welcome to ERA where a good chunk of people will troll, spin, exaggerate, and display all levels of ignorance towards anything Xbox.

I wonder if Microsoft sees a good opportunity to buy EA now that EA is worth $27 Billion in market cap. Both companies align very well in terms of strategy and vision of the gaming industry, so both companies are a natural fit. So Microsoft may pay $30-35 billion

I am sure we would be far more fair to Xbox, if MS ever publishes the actual numbers concerning their success.

As it is, they can't tell us how well Gamepass is selling, without accidentally revealing Xb1 sales numbers indirectly.

What does Sony have to do with this thread?

Congrats Microsoft. I'm really enjoying Gamepass and the overall direction for Xbox. Well deserved success!

I'm interested to see what kind of game their new studios start putting out especially now that the games will be "free" for the subscribers and theoretically their buisness matters less about individual game sales and more about keeping people subscribed.

I have no idea if that ends up being better for the consumer or not but if it leads to more online focuesed / live games like State of Decay or Sea of Theives I'm not very interested.

But, like, if you play just 2 titles a month and pay full price (and there's zero reason to do that with all the free months and discounts and Rewards and all) you're paying $5 a game.

I mean, do they all have to be God of War or Breath of the Wild if you're paying almost nothing and you get them day/date as retail? Do ANY of them need to be that?

I love GP. It's not for everyone. I've played WAY more good titles this year than I ever have (and I've been gaming about 40 years) and I've spent WAY less on console software this year than I have in at least 15 years.

I'm not sure this service will ever be for me. I jumped on when they were selling months for $5. And got a year. I've used it a handful of times. If you don't have time to play dozens of games, the service isn't worth it. You're better off just buying a few games you play a lot. Plus, then you're not rushed to finish them before they get pulled from the service.

This. It's like Cult of Mac or 9to5Mac criticizing Apple...it's never gonna happen.

It's like a mom telling their child they are the smartest one in the class.

When you see a title saying "...analysts are starting to notice" doesn't that imply to you that hard data is being cited in the report?

Logic 101.

Sony is on course to sell over 100 million PS4 this gen, completely destroying the xbox one yet somehow all we hear is how they should copy Microsoft next gen. um what?

How many shares do you own in Sony? Aren't you just a consumer? Doesn't it make sense to you for Sony to copy MS in pro-consumer areas like BC and a Gamepass-like subscription? Would any of these harm Sony's chances next gen?

PG latest game is 92 on Metacritic and their 2nd studio full of Rpg veterans.

Ninja Theory last game was Hellblade and before that DmC.

We happy few devs are also made up of former Bioshock devs and we happy few is decent game made with limited budget and time before they were acquired, same goes for Undead labs nd all.

All MS studios are capable devs and now Phill getting full support from MS top management to go all out means we will get lot of high quality stuff.

Plus Obsidian is also about to join the family.

There's no reason to believe these studios can't make decent / good games.

For those flogging the dead horse of 'exclusives' it's worth noting the gamepass sub gives access to exclusives and third party content licensed to appear on gamepass

Gears 5, Crackdown 3, Ori 2 are exclusives coming out next year that we know of. Almost certainly there ARE more unannounced games for 2019.
Your comment about lack of exclusives (obviously console warz nonsense) which you then segued into 'concern' about 'steady stream' has no basis in reality.

Does the Motley Fool article actually say Valve is worried about MS and EA not releasing their games on Steam? Or is that just the article with this mess of a take

Game Pass is the best idea to come from this generation. I said this when it was first announced, but Sony and Nintendo need to copy this idea asap. playing Sony or Nintendo games day one on a subscription would be insane.
Could Sony afford to take this risk? They don't exactly have the financial backing of Microsoft.
