Let me start off by saying that I enjoy gaming on PC. Due to its open nature, it offers many experiences not found in the console space. In fact, some of the best experiences I've had this year have been on pc. Now despite this, it's unnecessarily cumbersome and I feel like the majority of the blame rests at the feet of Microsoft.

Yesterday, on my way home from work, I stopped by the store and purchased an Xbox one controller to use on my PC. I was excited to get a "plug and play" solution to my controller issue. One would assume that a controller made for their eco system would "just work". Unfortunately, that's not the case. I attempted to connect the controller to my pc via Bluetooth and it would just not connect. Looking through event viewer, I was able to get the full error message which was not displayed in the settings menu. This led to me wasting almost an hour scouring through forum posts to find a solution that never materialized. After reading and trying the terrible suggestions by the Microsoft support team, I got tired and decided to take a nap. I woke up about an hour or two later and continued to troubleshoot the problem. This led to me into device manager where I attempted to delete and reinstall the Bluetooth drivers. Of course, as expected, this didn't resolve the issue. Rolling back the drivers also failed to resolve the issue. Finally, after spending more time scouring the web, I was able to find different versions of the Bluetooth driver. I snagged the on that was released with the anniversary update and installed it through device manager. This seemed to do the trick and I was able to pair the controller with my PC. Success right? Wrong. My short-lived jubilation was replaced by a feeling of annoyance once I started playing games. I noticed a minimum of 10fps performance hit when connecting the controller via Bluetooth. Furthermore, I got random dips that would tank my fps which affected my enjoyment of the game. Once I switched to wired mode, those dips and frame rate hitches where gone. I was left with a feeling of amazement. Something as simple as connecting a controller can cause fps losses? Truly a new low for Microsoft.

Microsoft really need to learn from Apple when it comes to creating an ecosystem. Your products should just work in your ecosystem. No fiddling around, no temperamental issues, nothing. I spent at least 2 hours trying to resolve an issue that simply does not exist in the console space. Those 2 hours could have been better spent playing a game. Microsoft really need to do improve. They seem to do things half-heartedly to the detriment of the platform. An example of this is the terrible windows store. Anyway, that was my terrible experience yesterday that I felt the need to share.

I wholeheartedly agree. PC gaming in general is a pain in the arse.

But when everything just clicks it's a thing of pure orgasmic pleasure. Something of which consoles will never be able to recreate.

You don't technically need one, but the USB wireless dongle would solve your problems.
So what you're suggesting is after spending $60 on a controller with bluetooth functionality designed to work on windows 10, I spend another $60 to purchase the wireless adapter that doesn't take advantage of said bluetooth technology? That doesn't sound like a solution to the bluetooth problem.

Some of that stuff is really hit or miss and it's unfortunate error messages aren't as helpful as they could be (if that's even possible given the breadth of problems out there).

I may be alone, but I'll be honest - I've had more problems with my consoles in the last few years than my PC as far as playing games go, in terms of crashes, slow patch/game downloads or patches that do not automatically apply, and other general quality of life stuff.

And that's ignoring stuff like the full weird year where my Xbox One controllers kept disconnecting, before Microsoft fixed that with a firmware update.

Yea Bluetooth in general is finicky. It's why I really don't lose any sleep knowing my wireless controller is just RF or whatever. All I lose is a usb slot.

It's $25 and I think it uses wireless, not bluetooth. (I use them on my PCs)

Two things:

One, i agree PC gaming can be a pain in the arse. I actually have the same issue and ended up getting the wireless adapter anyway. Also has the benefit of being able to pair multiple devices.

Two, the wireless adapter is nowhere near 60 dollars.

I am considering going back to console anyway for a variety of other reasons. Getting kind of tired of PC gaming. Although i realize a lot of it is my own fault.

Damn right it is, but when you get it set up to where it's no longer a hassle and moving in and out of everything is now much, much better than it would be on a console, it's a nice feeling.

PC Gaming is weird. Sometimes things "just work" better than consoles, then you have games that for whatever reason don't want to work on your system but are perfectly fine on a friend's with the same exact specs.

In otherwords, why does Titanfall 2 have so many damn stutters on my rig?!

In portugal the pack of the controller with the dongle costs 10 euros more then the base controller price; it doesn't cost the price of another controller. Alone it costs around 20 euro. i get you are annoyed it doesn't work like you want but i don't get why you are making the dongle as expensive as a controller. It sounds like you don't want help to make it work...

Personally consoles are much worse then PC for me. Switch my lastest console has wireless controllers that don't function if I'm not near the console; i had to buy a "pro" controller so i could play from the sofa.

Honestly the problem is less with PC gaming and more to do with the fact that bluetooth for the most part is a trash standard (too loose) with trash implementations in hardware and software. It could just be that your Bluetooth module is crap, I went through half a dozen trying to find good ones back when I connected my Wii controllers that way for use with Dolphin (now I just use the Dolphinbar).

And that isn't something that is specific to PCs. I was listening to the All About Android podcast and they had someone from August Smart Locks on and he went on a rant about how hard it is to be a company that sells products that rely on bluetooth because the quality of bluetooth implementations across smartphone devices can vary greatly. People want to act like bluetooth is this solid and consistent standard and it just isn't.

Now what Microsoft can control is the functionality with the dongle, and those work flawlessly.

I switched back to console primarily earlier this year when I got pissed at the GPU shortages and got a 4K HDR TV, a Pro, and an X for almost the same amount of money as a 1080Ti (after some trade-ins). There are some things I miss about PC being my main squeeze, but I do NOT miss sitting down for my precious few hours after work and after the kid is in bed and having to fuck with things to get them to work correctly.

Although please don't read my post history about how I spent all weekend frustrated and fiddling with the HDR in Red Dead...

I agree

For example locking games to 30 FPS is the worst thing ever on PC. It's a nightmare.

Bluetooth ranges from frustrating to ridiculous in almost all cases, I'd say, especially on platforms with more open-ended standards (i.e., PC and Android). Frankly, I miss the Logitech F510, which is a brilliant controller that they seem to have discontinued a long time ago in favor of the rumble-less F310 and (actually frustrating based on secondhand accounts) wireless F710.

I'll never be able to say goodbye to PC gaming, though, mainly because of the flexibility inherent to the format. I can play games 20 years old on my current hardware, often with next to no configuring.

I feel you OP

My Official wireless xbox Bluetooth adapter causes my pc to BSOD after a few minutes with the error code being related to the adapter. Haven't found a solution still and now im stuck using it wired with a usb cable like its the ps2 days again.

Some days, my trusty easy PS4 is all i can stomatch.

The listing I had found on Amazon in my country was $60. After further searching, I found one for $29.99 at best buy and reserved one for pick. Regardless, the controller wasn't the point of my post. It was merely to point out that at times, PC gaming can be unnecessarily cumbersome. Nothing more, nothing less.

I've had my PC since late 2014 and always play with an Xbox One Controller via USB and never had any issues whatsoever.

I tried PC gaming back in 2004 and back then it was too much of a pain in the arse for me to get to terms with but nowadays it's so easy to use.

I've never really had any issues in 4 years apart from the occasional time I've had to go into the .imi file and change something, but that's rare.

I'd say PC gaming is just as easy as Console gaming now from my experience.

I have a spot in my heart for both. Sometimes I love the tinkering that PC gaming provides, and sometimes I just want to put in a game and start playing.

There is more upfront configuration and troubleshooting on PC but once you've gotten though most of that, it's usually pretty easy to find solutions to small problems here and there. PC's being so open can be a good or bad thing, you get much more freedom but you also have to learn how to get a PC to do exactly what you want.

A plataform with endless possibilities sure will have some troubles, but almost all of them have solutions. Can't say the same about consoles.

That is because you should never do this ;p

It can, but in some cases, consoles can be a pain too. Out of region games, support for things like ultra wide or high refresh panels, limits on control options, almost no mods, etc.

No matter which I play I usually have problems of some sort, lol. Just the other day I was fiddling with the video color space settings on One X and somehow got it set to something where all I had was a black screen. I ended up having to hook it up to a PC monitor and kick it to 1080p to fix the problem. This was on the night of RDR release and I had a mini coronary, lol

While many have pointed out that the OP is mainly having issues with controllers and bluetooth, the title of the thread is still valid. There are countless reasons why I struggle with PC gaming and often none of it is lack of knowledge. Often times its things like we're all describing where a driver, update, or random other aspect of a specific use case causes things to stop functioning. This is frustrating. It's also the lack of versatility, which some may cry foul at me saying, but it's true. My consoles work on all TVs that have compatible hookups, they work consistently regardless of revisions (as opposed to upgrades like the Pro or X), and they work as intended. My PC is capable of generating oh so many resolutions, frame rates, and even color schemes but it doesn't work consistently. On the upstairs TV I can't get 1440p, despite being supported the HDMI port doesn't detect right with either Windows or my Nvidia card. Downstairs there's something in my receiver/TV/PC setup that sometimes doesn't like to pass 7.1 uncompressed audio and other times it just needs to be re-setup as 7.1, but it's always a crap shoot. Then on my GSync monitor my PC sometimes decides to turn off Gsync randomly after a windows or nvidia update or it'll simply drop it to 60 fps. The list goes on and on. I love my PC and play many games on it, but if it's something I'll be spending a long time with and doesn't require a keyboard/mouse, I'm almost always going to grab the console version because it will be much more versatile than my PC. Granted, I know most PC players have one setup and stay there, they may understandably disagree.

What kind of BT adapter do you have? Is it something built into your mobo or wifi card? Is it old? It might not be good enough.

I'm not sure about Win10, but for Win7 even the Bluetooth driver/software stack varies widely.

A lot of cheap wifi parts out there also. My coworker has a cheaper laptop for his daughter that isn't reliable either. He's running a USB wifi adapter because the drivers for her stock cheap one disconnect a lot.

One of the reasons that when I got a laptop I made sure I could switch stuff out easily. Swapped the cheaper 2.4ghz only card out for a $30 Intel dual band one that was fantastic.

Dunno if the OP has a laptop or desktop, but either way, worth looking into a wifi/BT card upgrade to a reliable Intel one or the like. It is often super easy

Yeah I get the frustration, I've spent hours on computer issues in the past. Mind you this dates back to about 10 years and more ago. If you compare computer issues today to computer issues 10 or more years ago it's night and day. It's getting better all the time. I haven't had to download a driver in years (except GPU). The controller button mapping 'out of the box' in most games is a given now but it wasn't always. Actually having games on the PC that take a controller is a treat.

I could go on and on about the snow covered hill I had to walk up in order to find a controller, get a driver, and then map the controls for PC only to have it suck compared to console. Back in the day. Get off my lawn you entitled kids. /s

I bet Valve could make that easier if they really wanted to by integrating a software framerate limiter like Rivatuner directly into Steam. Could have controller and framerate options in one place, and accessible by just pressing the Steam / Xbox button on a controller (which would be better suited for 30 fps anyway).

What annoys me about PC gaming is that everything is too spread out. Have to use different (and worse / feature-lacking) game marketplaces for certain games, have to search around for software or fixes to get some games to run well or properly, etc. It seems like lots of stuff could be made more convenient on the user end.

I once spent two hours trying to figure out why my computer would crash while running graphically intensive games. I eventually set up a logging program to record the clocks and temp of my cpu/gpu/memory and mb. It turned that out my GPU, which had a factory overclock, was automatically overclocking almost 100mhz beyond the maximum boost clock from the factory. I had no overclocking/fan control software installed at the time As it was an open box I bought from microcenter, my guess is someone had flashed a new performance profile onto the gpu's bios and returned it when it my particular card couldn't handle extreme overclocking.

Shit happens with PC gaming that doesn't in console gaming. The flipside is the ability to either brute force performance issues or work around bugs/glitches in ways that are not possible on a console.

Its a give and take. Shit's expensive tho.

Getting rid of the stuttering in PC games is incredibly annoying. Sometimes impossible, depending on how Windows 10 feels that particular day. If you're not playing the high-end stuff, it's arguable that the annoyances outweigh the benefits.

guess that depends on whether or not the person views being able to play high-end games, or games with high-end visual settings, as the chief benefit of PC gaming.

The only annoyance for is, that sometimes my XOne controller won't connect with adapter. I have to un- and re-plug it to make it work; and it's annoying since I play from the couch and have to stand up again and walk over to my PC to replug that shitty little thing.
