Metroid: Samus Returns is/was a controversial game. Even when I think the game was generally well received, some gamers found the changes introduced were inadequated or the game was boring, among others opinions. On top of that, it stills being unclear if the title was a success sales-wise or not.

In my opinion, Mercury Steam did an amazing work collaborating with Sakamoto and Nintendo. It is true that the melee counter feels overused towards the end of the game, and its development may become repetitive, but that´s the nature of the original game. The minor changes introduced in the map were effective and I totally felll in love with the 360 degrees aiming. The graphics are amazing for the system and the 3D effect is just majestic. In combination with the sound design, they manage to create a realistic and intriguing atmosphere for the game.
For me, Metroid: Samus Returns is one of the best games in the system.

But at this point, the future of the subseries seems uncertain. In your opinion, what should be the next step for it? To make the discussion more interesting, I have created a poll. The options are the following:

- A new 2D/2.5D game: that would be my preference. As I said, I´m happy with the work of Mercury Steam, so I would hire them to develop a new 2.5D Metroid for the Switch. The graphics would be nuts! Nintendo could collaborate again in this project.

- A Super Metroid remake: Which developer is able to put their hands on the masterpiece? Which changes, if any, would you introduce?

- A Metroid Fusion remake: one of the most rumored options when talking about the subseries. Will you like to see the game on the 3DS or on the Switch?

- It´s dead (or at least we will not see a game in several years): Why?

- Other (please specify in the thread).

When commenting on this thread, please justify the option you have chosen. It would be great if you could add in your response your ideal developer, the system and how the game would be in the end. Thanks for participating.

Kind regards.

A 2D game that continues the story after Fusion and possibly involves the stuff hinted at in Samus Returns

Samus Returns is like the least controversial game. Just because it didn't get perfect reviews or do everything right doesn't mean it's divisive. It's a good game that did what it needed to do.

Anyway, the answer is obvious. Finally do Metroid 5 on the Switch, following up on what SR hinted at

No more ugly 2.5D that looks jaggy, low-res, and ages poorly, for starters. Haven't played Samus Returns, but I've seen enough screenshots and footage to know it looks bad.

Return to the high quality 2D visuals of Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission.

No more remakes, just do Metroid V. Have it be developed by an internal Nintendo team rather than a 3rd party.

I would personally like a game more focused on the action but I guess that is not what most want in Metroid.

I definitely think Metroid 5 is happening, but man I hope Mercury Steam ups their game on art, because I found the game itself to be pretty bland looking, although I did like their Samus model, looked like a nice hybrid between Super's model and the Prime games.

Is there anyone in Nintendo who cares enough about Metroid to convince managers to do so at EAD?

Away from Mercury Steam hopefully; SR felt like a copycat and not a perticularly good one.

Unless they go the lower budget, $40 game route, it's dead

The third option is to go 3D, third person

Really everyone should want Metroid 5 at this point, it's pretty clear. It's been nearly 20 years (!!) since "Metroid 4", they've finally finished remaking the most agreed upon "outdated" games in the series, we've had an interquel that was supposed to set up a Metroid 5... I'm not sure why you'd want anything else.

I don't really care if 2.5D or not or who makes it, I just want it to be good and move the story and universe forward.

The Mercury Steam game was really boring. And had none of the atmosphere of the original. Ultimately solid, but not representative of the love I have for the series. Metroid should be better.

New developer. Would be rad for them to keep it 2D but flip the script and go full SotN. With equipment and RPG elements. Imagine a baby Metroid familiar that gets bigger as it eats things and levels up!

I literally just thought of this and now I'm too excited.

I'm up for more 2.5d Metroids but keep it away from 3DS' archaic hardware. Samus Returns looks like shit on 3DS but not so bad on Citra emulator, that's how I finally ended up finishing it.

Would have loved if Metroid Dread actually came out, because it was supposed to be a sequel to Metroid Fusion, which is still my favourite 2D Metroid game.

All I want is an other 2D Metroid game that is Sprite based and that looks/plays like something out of this generation.

2D not full priced is the best they can do.

They know how much the metroid-clones on the shop have sold, and how many people that bought those would be interested in another proper Metroid. Leaving money on the table doing nothing.

Underrated post.

I dunno, my deepest hopes fall more toward the Metroid Dread end of the spectrum, but I also love the Chozo lore and extended canon (Commander Adam dialogues notwithstanding). Nintendo could chuck money at high-quality pixel art again a la Super Metroid. It's a winning franchise, but they need to take away Samus's voice again, she is better as a lone operative, silent and deadly in her environment. This may also be a bit of a stretch, but what about a game type where she actually does *bounty-hunting*? A space pirate nemesis system perhaps?

I hope it moves on. That is, full 3D game, whether first or third person. And that it reinvents itself with contemporary technical limitations. Doesn't necessarily mean open world, but that would be one of the first concepts to consider for an exploration driven game.

Similar to how Breath of the Wild finally freed Zelda from the game design template that was cemented by AlttP in 1991. As a result, the game is outselling other titles in the series and getting recognition, not only from the usual die hard Zelda fans, but also from an audience who isn't just looking for variations of the same 1991 template with new gimmicks added and improved visuals.

While I loved Super Metroid when I played it the first time on the Wii VC and now devour Hollow Knight on the Switch, the Metroidvania template has kind of peaked for me, just like the old Zelda template did. I'd love for the Metroid devs to have similar "mainstream" success to BotW with a modern interpretation of the Metroid universe, rather than them producing just another variation of a 30 year old game formula build around 30 year old technical limitations. All just so its niche of diehard fans can endlessly over analyze whether placing item X in room B1 compared to C3 in the 1994 iteration of the game impacted the game's flow as to be the best or worst in the series.

Edit: Also, if story absolutely needs to move to the foreground, please hire capable writers, Nintendo. K? Thanks. Drama is also fine, but not when it's so overdone and heavy handed to result in Other M's cringeworthyness

I want Metroid 5 already!! Been waiting 17 years! Come on Sakamoto!! Make Metroid Dread happen!!

And do it internally! Even if it's pixel art (no! ESPECIALLY if it's pixel art!) I want a proper sequel to Metroid Fusion, made by the same team within Nintendo EPD, taking the series in a bold new direction!

Port Samus Returns to Switch with graphics that aren't ass and then make a new game. There's no need for any moer remakes.

2D games can cost $ 60 and sell superbly, like Kirby, New Super Mario or Donkey Kong.

They just need to be interesting for the public, something that Metroid has problems with.

I wish people would restrict use of "2.5D" to games with a 3D rendered world viewed at multiple camera angles and influencing the gameplay like Klonoa and such. Just having 3D models and 3D backgrounds shouldn't be called 2.5D.

Anyway, Samus Returns clearly hinted at stuff that could be used to continue the plot of the main series with a Metroid 5 and it should definitely be a new 2D game.

Here's my idea for Metroid 5:
Samus is facing the fallout from being labelled a terrorist at the end of Metroid Fusion. This is interrupted by a sudden attack by a new faction of Space Pirates led by the evil Chozo seen at the end of Samus Returns and the evil group within the Federation responsible for the Bottle Ship and BSL incidents. They've revived Mother Brain as a clone, made new Metroids, maybe even have some X parasites, and have set up base on a new planet. Samus goes to stop them and clear her name.

Samus Returns was a great remake and almost every problem with it was due to the limitations set on it from being a remake. Mercury Steam would probably make an even better original game.

Metroid V for Switch. I don't care if it's developed by Mercury Steam. They did a great job.

Please don't touch Super Metroid!! It's great the way it is!!

If they are going to continue the story after Fusion, they need to have some sort of a plot twist as Samus destroyed all Metroids on BSL. Or they can just go full Zelda and ignore the timeline.

I was shocked by how good Samus Returns was. That said, this franchise is impossible to predict. Who knows what they'll do next.

Hurts my soul to see Metroid referred to as a subseries. Metroid Prime is a subseries. Metroid is the series.
I use the word subseries meaning is a series belonging the Metroid universe, not an inferior one. Metroid Prime is a subseries too. Sorry if it hurts your soul :P

Samus Returns revealed that...
...there's an evil militaristic faction of Chozo out there. As the Chozo researchers fled SR388, the evil Chozo arrived as a rescue party but ended up slaughtering all the survivors. Since Chozo created the metroids, this evil faction of Chozo can make more.

Don't follow a remake with a remake, even if it's one of the two best Metroid games. Honestly I'm probably more excited for a "Metroid V" than the new prime game which is also very exciting but yea we'll see.

It's well past time for Metroid 5. Ideally made in-house but since I don't think they have the manpower for that, keep with the arrangement with Mercury Steam and let them develop a new scenario around elements from Fusion along with the tidbits they left at the end of SR. Expand on their idea of Aeion as a power source and center the game around those new abilities rather than clinging to the same old set of power-ups we're used to.
Invest heavily into environmental storytelling. I'm not against story or other characters in Metroid games like some people, but the writing has never really gripped. Ideally I think it would be cool to do more of a "cold open" of sorts with this; start the game up with Samus landing on a planet and just...go. The reason she's there and what the ultimate goal is can all be gleaned as you progress.

Please don't just leave Sakamoto alone in a room to work on the game's story, even if I do think/hope he learned a lesson with his approach to Other M and its backlash.

Im really hoping they make a new game, because what they hinted at in samus returns was super crazy. Also I think mercury steam would be fine, most of the issues I had with samus returns are because of it being a remake of 2 so im sure with a higher budget they could do something great on the switch.

With the sheer amount of indie Metroidvanias can a full priced 2D Metroidvania compete?

I think they have to make it somewhat 3D like Other M. Although Other M gets blasted for many things the core style of it being a 3D game but having a ton of 2D sections works as a sequel to the 2D games.

i find it sad that the 2D games are called the "sub-series" when they were the originals. ¨Prime is the actual sub series.
even the series canon is still molded by the 2D games.

Should have been clearer, when I say 2D I mean graphics in the style of Super/Fusion/Zero Mission/etc. Not 2.5D like DK or Kirby. I don't see a game like that doing well at 60$. Maybe if it was higher res 2D like Hollow Knight or Shantae HGH, but I don't think Nintendo would go for that (or any of this really).

I think Metroid has barely even scratched the surface of where they can go from here.

Pretty sure Ridley isn't unique in that only 1 in the universe exists. Probably an entire planet's worth.
Time travel or discover that the Chozo are actually alive and well.
They went ham in metroid 2 with the transformations they could easily expand on this because they can.
Space Pirates origins or a new threat.
Mega sized metroid in 3 was interesting. There's no limit on what they can do.

There are tons of things to explore.

It goes into the same place where 2D games like 2D Zelda, Contra, Castlevania, etc. hang out:

Videogame IP Limbo

I don't want to be pessimistic but with the 3DS in comma, I can't see any 2D games having a place to flourish other than mobile

Would love to see a 2d Metroid that uses similar techniques to what we're using for Ori and the Will of the Wisps. A 2d Metroid with our tools could look bananas.
