First post is my answer as well, just don't enjoy or like fighting games and not competitive in the least. The Isabelle reveal trailer was adorable but smash games just don't appeal to me.

Ya know, I am 0% interested in fighting games as well. In fact, I do not play or have any interest in any other game that would be considered a fighter whatsoever.

But Smash Bros. is much much more than a fighting game for me. It's a competitive platform-fighter that also happens to be the definitive compendium of video game history. The characters are translated so faithfully, in terms of both their animations and game-feel. The way that each playable character positively radiates the feeling of their original games is just so completely unique, and a tremendous accomplishment to boot. I don't go to paid tournaments or anything, but I could fight matches against CPUs forever with this cast and still be satisfied. Not only is the game fun to play and control by its own virtues, but just seeing gaming's greatest accomplishments gathered together in one place with such love, care, and attention to detail is a definitively unique and special experience.

Fingers crossed that the secret single player mode for Ultimate is substantial! That would be the icing on the cake.

I'm interested in picking it up at some point, but Thronebreaker is out on consoles the same week and that's more my cup of tea.

I loved it as a kid, but my friends back then owned an N64/Gamecube themselves.

I don't wanna splash all that cash on controllers to maybe play it a couple of times.

Why do you need to know people's reasons for such a thing.

I'm buying Smash, but moving away from my little brothers makes me think I won't actually play it that much. That unannounced mode better be a meaty single player.

I'll probably get it, but it doesn't really feel that hype. I like smash but there's not much excitement around it for me because it's all just so familiar at this point.

I just don't get the appeal I'm afraid - played on multiple systems over multiple generations and found myself left with a resounding sense of indifference.

Smash is something that never appealed to me outside of playing local multiplayer with my kids. I never played it by myself, it was only ever with them - and we'd have fun with it.
But they've mostly outgrown videogames at this point, so a purchase would be a waste of money.
Myself, I'd much rather buy a fighting game like Soul Calibur 6. Smash will always be a party game in my eyes.

I don't like fighting games. Also Smash is one of those games like Pokemon where the fanbase irrationally infuriate me. This thread is a perfect example "WHY ARE YOU NOT PLAYING SMASH!!1!" - inflated sense of importance.

I hate the gameplay.

Same. A friend of mine who is a huge Smash fan begged me to play it with him on Wii U. I felt like the claims about it being for "casuals" were complete bullshit.

I simply don't get it. The floaty controls and sheer chaos of shit happening on screen...I was just completely lost.

Of course it doesn't help that I'm not even that big a fan of fighting games to begin with. I played SFIV on a super casual level but I hate how complicated and competitive these games get.

Im not interested in party fighters.
Doubly not interested in Nintendo characters.

My switch is a Bayonetta machine, like the Wii U before it.

Personally I've never found Smash Bros particularly interesting. Played the Wii version when that came out and that did nothing for me.
I understand the appeal but beyond seeing some nostalgic characters punch each other its a snooze fest.

Looking at the poll I guess I'm not alone.

Lol seems like the most replies seem to be

1. I don't like fighting games, I can't understand them
2. I don't have friends to play with/ don't care about online play
3. I live in Europe, what's smash?

I am a HUGE fan of fighting games.

I just don't like Smash in particular.

I'll probably still buy it as the duty of the person with a portable 4-player machine among my acquaintances.

The 3DS version passed me by but I owned the N64 original and was able to give the GameCube, Wii and Wii U titles a good go on other people's consoles. Never once came close to enjoying myself. No thanks.

Played the first game at the time and it was alright but never felt it was great. Every game since just seems to be the same thing but with more characters and better graphics.

I will get it but Smash 4 was a huge dissapointment, so i'm not as excited for Ultimate as i normally would be.

I played melee and brawl back in the days and while they are fun with friends I just find them boring after a while solo. There is no progression or anything just endless mindless fights (and I don't call that sticker unlocks progression). Brawl had the subspace emissary which I actually kinda liked and gave me some short of single player thing to do but this one doesn't seem like it has anything similar, so I will pass.

When I got Smash 4 for the first time I too got confused by the controls. They were veeeery complicated, the opposite of what I was expecting for a "party" game. Street fighter, tekken, soul calibur... none could match the "directional + button" amount of things to do.

But after 30-40 hours (trophies kept me going) it's just became the best fighting game system to me. Playing it good, smashing precisely, shielding and fighting in the air, it's just too exciting. Also it can be total chaos or no gimmicks at all, but also a billion levels between those (probably a trillion in ultimate).

It's hard to un-hadouken your brain, but so worthy!

Ive played almost every fighter that has come out in the past 5 years.

I have plenty of people who I could play online with, people who leave and breathe smash.

I live in Europe.

I just dont care for smash. As far as im concerned, its as much a platformer as a fighting game. I dont enjoy the mechanics nor the stages. That goes for its clones as well. I like fighting on 2d planes, even with 8 way movement.

I mean it's super, super simple to get into the controls, that's why they're designed the way they are. No complicated combos, simply button + directional input. It's why you can have super complex combos and use of the abilities, but alternatively your baby cousin can play as Pikachu, spam Thunder (Down+B) and still have a decent chance of winning.

-Haven't enjoyed the series historically.
-Not a huge Nintendo fan so 98℅ of the roster means nothing to me.
-No interest in spending hours tediously unlocking dozens upon dozens of characters.
-I tend to bounce off fighters quickly these days, even series I'm a fan of.

I don't have friends over to play local multiplayer anymore, and their online service is so bad that none of my friends will use it to play Smash online, so I'm just saving my money snd my time.

I've bought every entry in the series but haven't played for more than a couple of hours since Melee. The reason for that is I don't really have anyone local to play it with anymore. When I meet up with my friends we go out and do stuff, sitting around playing video games died off as a group thing as we got older, we still play online together at least twice a week but I don't hold out much hope for the online based on the last couple of iterations so i'm going to be passing on this one.

The genre - I play single player games, no time for multiplayer games nowadays. The last one I played properly was Call of Duty 2. I've dabbled in Destiny, but couldn't stand the grind.

I stick to single player gaming.

Vain and utterly boring game without any sense of accomplishment. Stupid mechanics, lame soundtrack.

I dislike fighting games in general, Smash is just like the rest of them. Never got the appeal.

And rapid, stupid and twattish fanbase* makes me want to stab my eyes hundred times.

*Not all people, but a large enough portion to extrapolate my view to all of them.

its a brawler game............don't care for them and especially don't care for them for online play.

I don't do fighting/brawler games unless they have an insanely expansive singleplayer.

It just bores the fuck out of me.

Meh Ive played every game in the series. Barely played smash Wii u. I'm just bored by it now. Still remember having a blast with smash 64 in 2000. Good times

But I can't be hyped or bothered by smash anymore. I'll probably get it but also probably not

It has just never been a series that interested me. I am mainly a single player story focused gamer and this is everything that isn't. If I wanted a party game for the Switch for the holiday period, which I am considering, I'll pick up Mario Party.
