The Pittsburgh Penguins tonight are playing their first home game since Saturday's mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue, where a gunman killed 11 people in what the Anti-Defamation League called the "deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States." The Penguins added a Star of David to their uniforms with the phrase "Stronger Than Hate" for tonight. And before the game began, they had an 11-second moment of silence for the victims along with an especially emotional performance of the national anthem.

The ceremony was the proper amount of restrained, even if it did hit that unearned optimistic tone that all pregame tragedy-related ceremonies do. But besides the fact that everything the Penguins are doing to honor the victims feels completely insincere given that they pal around with a president who's actively encouraged anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, and whose only solution to gun violence is "more guns," there also was a pretty colossal miscalculation in the pregame ceremony itself by whomever allowed this "Blue Lives Matter" flag to receive prominent placement at the ceremonial puck drop.

Leave it to the cops to make it all about themselves.

This is still the league where those in control deny the existence of CTE, so not at all shocked or surprised.

I'm assuming because there were 4 officers injured responding to the attack. Bad way to honor those cops and fuck blue lives matter.

Edited because ACAB. Stop quoting me like I'm trying to get you to donate to the FOP.

They could have use any number of symbols or statements. But they choose the racist one

Coulda just used, y'know, the American flag.

BlueLivesMatter is a deliberate statement that has nothing to do with cops getting gunned down by white supremacists.

Imagine if you lived in a world with a neighbendless combination of words and symbols to express thoughts. Imagine that you could choose words or a symbol that recognized police officers killed in the line of duty in a way that wasn't a knee-jerk, anti-black slogan.

Imagine.

Even when we are honoring the victims of a mass shooting by a Nazi, we still have to throw in anti-black racism. This country tests me daily.

Could've used the department's crest, the state flag or any other dozens of non-racist symbols.... That's the first thing they grab

Blue Lives Matter flags are a direct response to people willfully misunderstanding Black Lives Matter so fuck this.

The Pittsburgh flag is really good (imo), and is also basically the Pittsburgh Police's logo, but nah, let's go with the racist edgelord bullshit

Though the thin blue line predates the blue lives matter term it's been coopted enough for the wrong reasons (anti black lives matter) that it's not a good look.

Strike that. Looks like the flag version has become the definitive symbol of the movement...

Thin blue line predates black lives matter by a good while, but even then, the blue line possessed a negative connotation in regards to police turning the other way in investigating and prosecuting those among their ranks who have committed wrong doing, racist or otherwise.

It's a bad look without the recent day baggage.

What the fuck, Penguins? You were doing so good with honoring the victims of the shooting, but then you pull this, taking away a lot of the good will you would've gotten.

Unless I'm mistaken the blue line flag/symbol has existed as a sign for law enforcement prior to Blue Lives Matter. Having said that it largely seems to be representative of that movement at this point, and frankly I'm not sure any symbol for police is warranted in a tribute to lives lost in that shooting.

As i mentioned above, it always existed, but it always existed in regards to containing everything within that line, in a "keeping things in house" sort of way. No snitching, turning a blind eye if someone's being overly aggressive.

You know, gang mentality shit. The blue line was never not a negative.

Oh yeah I agree with this take on it. I just speaking specifically to the Blue Lives Matter bit. It doesn't really matter much I suppose, either way it's bad.
