After lengthy negotiations, Naomi Watts has signed on to lead the ensemble cast of HBO's Game Of Thrones prequel pilot, from writer Jane Goldman and author/GOTco-executive producer George R.R. Martin.

Created by Goldman and Martin and written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin, the untitled prequel takes place thousands of years before the events of Game Of Thrones. It chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it's not the story we think we know.

The creative team behind the project is not giving away much about Watts' character — she will play a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.

I'm probably being cynical, and I'm going to eat this up, but I predict this show does half the numbers of GoT.

Not gonna lie, I only heard about her in BoJack Horseman lol.

She seems talented though, so good luck.

I read the title as "wants to" and figured this was gonna be about some interview asking her if she wanted to and her going "sure".

Anyway, I'll take it. She's a good actress.

But more importantly: GoT news, babiiii

I swear she has the worst agent in Hollywood. This is obviously going to be a well-paying gig, but the quality of the work she's in is never equal to her talent.

age of heroes just seems like the worst period to set a show. it ruins the mystery surrounding the myths.

I'm kinda done with Westeros now, but as far as casting goes, Naomi Watts is good. Makes me more likely to check it out, rather than less or no effect.

I love Naomi Watts but I don't like GoT at all. Might check in just for her, but doubt I'll stick with it.

Considering how little is known of the Age of Heroes, it's almost pointless to speculate what character she could be playing.

Still, a cool casting choice. Hopefully this fresh series doesn't succumb to many of the worst instincts and habits of the main series.
