Mystic Defender was so underrated in terms of graphics. Kinda got forgotten about between Ghouls 'N Ghosts and Revenge of Shinobi.

I have a ton of nostalgia for Mystic Defender. The music and atmosphere are amazing. That and Alisia Dragoon hold up for me as two of my favorite sidescrollers on the Genesis (Alisia Dragoon also is a certified banger soundtrack, imo the best Genesis soundtrack).

I pulled my Sega CDX unit out yesterday and played some Genesis games on it, completely oblivious to the fact that I was commemorating this grand occasion. Haha!

SEGA Genesis introduced me to one of my favorite franchises of all time in Golden Axe and for that it has my adoration alone, now add in Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Castlevania, Warsong, Herzog Zwei, Comix Zone, Virtua Fighter, Bonanza Bros and so on it's just a fantastic console.

Happy birthday to the console of my early childhood. Waking up Saturday mornings to watch cartoons and play Sonic 2 multiplayer with my bros was one of my happiest memories as a child.

Wow, I'm old lol.

Genesis was my first console (brother technically got the NES). I got it for my birthday in 1992 with Altered Beast. I played that constantly. I can still remember sitting in the basement on the floor like 2' away from a wooden cabinet RCA TV. It looked so amazing at the time.

I loved sports games back in the day so NBA Live '95 and NHLPA Hockey '93 defined my life then. I basically 'learned' hockey from NHL and NHLPA hockey. I know '94 gets all the love, but '93 is my go to game.

Also fond memories of Toe Jam & Earl at my friends house.

The school playground & cafeteria 16 bit console debate was peak console wars imo (see Billy Madison lol).

Nice! However, I grew up with the 32-bit version, hehe...

This is the one I got, came with Sonic 2.

Thing died on me just a few years later, the day I rented Vectorman from the local rental store. And because this died, my 32X became useless T_T.

NES --> Genesis

Best decision ever. I didn't end up getting an SNES for quite awhile afterwards. Genesis just seemed cooler.

I bought the Sega Genesis I own today entering my Senior year of college in 1992. It had Sonic in the box and I bought Bulls vs. Lakers and the NBA Playoffs alongside it. Both were transcendent coming from NES where I only dabbled. I was a big 8-bit computer guy with an Atari 800XL and friends with the C64 and Commodore 128 as well as an arcade junkie. Sega Genesis defined me as a "console gamer" from that day forward due to its stunning speed and exciting gameplay. I really only discovered the JRPG once I bought a Super Nintendo in the following year and by accident since I bought that system to play Street Fighter II. To this day, Genesis probably has at least two or three games that I would put in a Top 10 of all-time with Gunstar Heroes being one along with Streets of Rage 2.

It has such a massively broad library of awesome lesser known games, though. Seeing what people post here reminds me of that. If you haven't, definitely play...

Atomic Runner
Cyborg Justice
Steel Empire
Hellfire
Gaiares
Alisia Dragoon
Twin Cobra
Fire Shark
Ex-Ranza/Ranger X
Bio-Hazard Battle
Outrun 2019
Trouble Shooter/Battlemania
Truxton/Tatsujin
Landstalker
Dashin' Desperadoes
Wiz 'n' Liz
Marvel Land
Death Duel
Rambo III
Mega Turrican
Global Gladiators
Elemental Master
Dino Land

...and so many more. Wow. I mean, I could keep going a long time with titles that I know those of you who are not in your mid-40's would likely not know but are so worth playing still. It had a lot of shooters and because they were coming hot and heavy, they often got overlooked at the time but when you revisit today, you can easily see the care that went into them whether arcade ports or originals. It's a brilliant library to get exposed to for the first time ever today.

Judging by internet posts over the last 20+ years, there seems to be a tendency for people that had all three to rank the Genesis first overall. All three were amazing so I think an argument for any of them is fine as long one's well versed in their libraries.

My childhood, i loved the mega drive to death, i remember going to the videogames shop to buy one (after saving for an eternity) and then being stunned of finding the Mega Drive 2 on store shelves, i could not believe that i went to buy the mega drive and ended with its successor (i realised that it is the same machine when inreturned home).

- thunder force 3
- sonic 1-2-3-k
- batman returns
- mortal kombat 1-2-3
- street fighter 2 and super street fighter 2
- street of rage 1-2-3
- golden axe 3
- aladdin
- Lion king

Great post, great avatar :). I'm impressed how infamous are those absolute classics in the US. (You're the first to mention them...)

For instance, Landstalker is simply the best A-RPG on the system.

if you look at the sort of surface-level "marquee titles", it's very easy to think the SNES is the clear winner of the generation. both the TG-16 and Genesis/MD require a bit more research and investment of time to get the most out of their libraries. The TG-16 obviously NEEDS the CD system, and lots of imports, to get the most out of it, the Genesis's popular titles (sport games) weren't always the best.

Thrash metal? On the Genesis?

You betcha

Man, I sucked at this game and rarely played it but I watched my brothers play it so many times. It was borderline hypnotizing and that music just grooved on and on. I still hum Pacific Coast every now and then...

Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Contra: Hard Corps, and Castlevania: Bloodlines are absolutely my favorite MD games.
Konami (and early Treasure which was ex-Konami) was so good back then. ;_;

Also, we are friends of Shining Force Avatar :p

Respect to the console that still looks sleek today, along with its cartridges. Those clamshell cases make it such a joy to collect, too.

Mega-drive is such a better name then Genisis
Nah, Genesis is iconic. It's god damn biblical, show some respect. Mega Drive meanwhile is a pairing of generic words. UHH IT'S BIGGER THAN A BIG DRIVE, IT'S A MEGA DRIVE get outta here with that I won't hear it.

I always wanted to play the spiritual successor on the Saturn, Psychic Killer / Assassin Taromaru, but it's only like the rarest and most expensive game on that console.

Had access to both systems through work at the time. Playing Jap Sonic 1 in full 60Hz, and then seeing the butchered 50Hz UK version broke my heart.

I love the Genesis. I have a collection of over 200 games for it, all complete in box. And I don't buy any old games I find, just the ones I'm interested in or enjoy playing. If you have an appetite for fast-paced action games, shooters, and arcade titles, it's probably the greatest console ever.

CONFIRM.
The problem was that after a few years of abuse, you "could hear" the slider going up and down as if I was scratching a record. Eventually you could not touch it or the sound would break and just hear the left or the right channel or none at all.

first console my parents ever bought me, came packed in with the 6-in-1 cart that contianed Sonic 1, Columns, Super Monaco GP, Streets of Rage, Revenge of the Shinobi and SEGA Soccer. I played the thing to death and those 6 games kept me content for years.

I revisited it mostly through emulators growing up, Shining Force 2 is definitely one of my favourite titles on the console and for sure got me into SRPGs. I pre-ordered a Mega SG but my Japanese MK2 sitting in the living room still gets regular love.

It's probably just nostalgia but the slow PAL music from Sonic 1 had it's charm

Got a Mega Drive for Christmas around 1992. My dad bought it from a hole in the wall kiosk-type place in a local shopping centre.

We got a few games with it that were Genesis carts with built in adapter things. Mercs, Dino Land and some puzzle game. Dino Land was a family favourite, my mother played that a lot when we went to bed. FIFA games were big for us too, and Striker, that was a great football game too.

I almost didn't include Landstalker because I feel like people know about that game, but it's been 25 years so maybe it really is at a point where a lot of that institutional knowledge of what's awesome on Sega Genesis is becoming lost to time?

For me, it's my favorite action RPG of the generation. I was always a huge fan of isometric games. Viewpoint is in my top five shooters without a doubt (the Neo version... which I bought on Neo CD last year after years of chasing an AES cart and finally deciding I'll never have the dough when I need it to get it), although the Sega Genesis version of that isn't the best. It's still well worth playing though IMO. But yeah, Landstalker is brilliant. I mean, it's Climax! Of course it's amazing! They were at the top of their game in the 16-bit era. Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force are more well known and excellent too, but I love Landstalker.

I had many good memories with the Genesis/Mega Drive.

Phantasy Star IV was easily one of my favorite games back then.

maybe this is a good thread to ask, but does anyone know what happened to Paprium? it looked like it could have been one of the best brawlers on the system but i can't find any new info other than this video
