I'll listen to their fiscal call soon to see if there's anything else interesting.

Supporting your games with meaningful content and updates for years to your games make people happy and engaged enough to threw some more dollars at it, who knew

Gamers have voted with their wallets...

I think its more that most people like to have a hobby. They enjoy playing one game and mastering it and GAAS fulfill that need perfectly. Gamers who like to hop games all the time I think are actually the minority of the gaming world.

A lot also play like... a handful of service games, if that makes sense, but they don't go through titles in the same way that people who just play singleplayer do.

They'll often end up back on older titles depending on what's going on with them. Like Destiny 2 has swung from being #2 to being #30 to being #2 again on the Xbox Most Played Charts depending on what content is out.

I mean, the additional content they provide to continue supporting their current games keep me coming back honestly...it's great to me. I don't bother with microtransactions personally but more DLC in things like Far Cry and Assassin's Creed are definitely my jam. Keep 'em coming.

Funny how all of them except fc5 sucked at launch, I guess fixing your game years after is a good strategy.

Ubisoft have been doing great things with their GaaS, I'm sure when someone like Sony manage to match them ERA will be more supportive.

People have a lot of confidence in buying Ubisoft games, because they know even if they end up having problems at launch, that Ubisoft will go and fix up the games and make them better.

Compare that to EA, where they don't really do that to nearly the same extent, and people are way more hesitant there.

They're still releasing substantial content for Steep, for fuck sakes. Ubi is ludicrously good at supporting their titles. (That said, still waiting to hear how they're going to turn The Crew 2 around).

Sometimes things are so bad that it takes them a while to figure out exactly how to fix it and then implement the amount of change needed, hahaha.

There's right ways and wrong ways to do this. Far Cry and Rainbow Six Siege seem to be fair business models.

People paid for DLC in previous generations without knowing it. Take a look at some of the sequels on the PS2 and tell me those games couldn't have been DLC instead. Same game engines. Similar assets remixed. There's often as much content in today's DLC than previous gen full sequels...plus you have developers fix and continue to tweak original releases rather than have gamers have to wait for a sequel to get all the easy fixes.

I'm strongly against loot boxes but good with most everything else.

I mean, strategy games have been doing this for years. civilisation 5 was incredibly barebones at launch, but firaxis pushes more classic expansions for that series with lighter civ dlc thrown in. paradox's entire business model is predicated on recurring mid-size dlcs for a dedicated niche audience. the sims too, etc

This is the reason why I'm buying the division 2 at least a year after release, these type of games only get better from community feedback and it's usually better to just wait.

I wish Ubisoft had a game for me to get into as much as everyone gets into AC. I wanted to like Watch Dogs but it just bores me. The Division had great atmosphere, but I wanted more stealth and immersive sim elements.

It's pretty much like they are following Blizzard as an example? Support your games for years with updates. Every update, players come back and they'll probably spread some positive word of mouth (or negative lol). Sounds better than releasing a full product yearly and trying to hype that up yourself. PoE is another one that continues to pull me back for weeks every few months with their events and I'm always excited to tell other people hey, you try that delver update? That game is only getting more popular as D3 gets laughed at.

As long as they're not intrusive, I don't care if they keep them in. I've never felt like I needed to buy any microtransactions in any of their single player games. Can't comment on the MP ones as I don't play them.

I really need to jump back into Wildlands to see what they've added. Amazing that they're doing so much 'for free'.

40 million players is a new milestone for Siege. It matches the 40 million players Overwatch announced in May. It's secretly huge, despite Overwatch having 1000% more mindshare.

They were kinda dodgy with Odyssey questions. It performed better than they expected but they are not bragging about Odyssey numbers. They did say that game sold 10% better digitally than Origins (45% digital sales).

I wonder if this reflects a change where gamers in general are spending more time and money on fewer games. It would be interesting to know how many Era members spend money on recurring purchases or multiple seasons of DLC, and on how many games they do so at once. I'd include things like:
  • Seasonal DLC
  • Premium currency or boosters
  • Loot boxes
  • Direct cosmetic purchases
  • Levels (or level packs)
  • Single-game subscriptions (not PSN+, etc.)
It seems like there's probably a limit to how many live games the market can support at once, but maybe publishers can offset that by releasing fewer games (which has been happening anyway) and supporting them for longer periods of time (also already happening).

Maybe this only seems strange to me because I'm still in a bubble buying a couple dozen games a year, half of them indies.

They've created better and better games as the gen has went on IMO, despite putting more focus on GAAS their games are still reliably enjoyable and you still get your money's worth with their base games.

AC Odyssey is in my top 3 for this year and Siege is probably in my top 5 of all time. I would be keen to see what they were capable of if they only put out one big title each year though, or one every 2 years.

Dont think Ubisoft gets enough credit for the variety in their releases. Of course the ideas are more creative than the games but still

Fuck microtransactions by the way. They get more intrusive every year.

I paid $85 for Siege complete. I've never paid that for a video game, but that is A LOT of game for $85 and soooo fun. You got me Ubi you sly bastards.

Ubisoft has been releasing high quality games all generation and they are one of the best in the biz as far as post launch support. This is not surprising at all.

I mean hey worked with Siege, Division, Crew 1, etc.

They just need time to correct their path and it's great.

Curious to see if they disclose how many first-time AC players took the plunge with Odyssey (based on Uplay activity, I guess)

But AC is kind of like AMC's The Walking Dead - peak ratings/sales were some years back, it's had moments where it's stepped in it (Glenn/Desmond), and people were over the big bads (Negan/Juno) some time ago. But some people still stuck around, it's still highly rated comparatively, and the creators want it to go on for as long as possible.
