VERY strong results. Literally the Playstation business is firing on all cylinders

The fact they've been able to keep this kind of momentum without deep price cuts is incredible

Why?

The thing is still selling well without a cut. Apple doesn't slash the prices of iPhones at all until the new phone is actually out. They might very well not actually do a PS4 cut until the PS5 is actually out and they're winding down.

They really don't. It's still selling. People are thinking of this in old generation terms.

Well I guess it depends when they are coming out with it might not be until 2020 at the latest 2021

Just insane how well this thing keeps on selling. Almost 5 years old and barely seen a price decrease at all since launch. Will be over 90 million by the end of 2018 for sure.

PS4 will pass 100 million units next year

Only question is how early in the year they can hit it

Sony should seriously consider a late start to the ps5. Current gen is way to good for them right now and the pro is acceptably powerful.

They are insane if they don't do 200 dollar promotion this year. How the heck do you make worse deals then last year?

I'd be shocked if they bring out ps5 in 19, there's no need to, ps4 still selling like hotcakes. No way they going to want to transition earlier than 20-21

Usually this slide has a couple of negatives like lower hardware revenue due to price cut or currency exchange loss or something but this time it is all pluses!!! Playstation firing on all cylinders

Still how is the console still $299? Probably see $250 minimum for deals. They best have some good PSVR deal's or else.
price of a product is determined by supply and demand....if supply outstripped demand, price will drop. As the price are still not dropped officially, it's safe to say that there's still healthy demand vis a vis supply...

100+ million is happening sometime early next year. No doubt about it now.

Yeah promotional prices or foreign exchange are the usual suspects for negatives. They don't seem to be an issue this time around.

Good, Sony doing great is good for gaming. Hopefully they invest in more studios or invest even more to their excisting studios. We need a steady stream of exclusives threw the whole gen.

Sony keeps rolling with the PS4 and PSN. Great numbers

That PS5 rumor for next year seems like a waste of potential money for Sony..

Imagine if Sony was even half as price competitive as MS is with Xbox. Literally $50-$100 price drops and multipl free game bundles with everything they can get their hands on and promotional giveaways every month. Got Damit Sony.

We'd have a chance at beating ps2 if they did that.

It would be the wrong move though. Like, they went to $199 last year and sold out extremely early.

It's really important to emphasize again how ridiculously important the video games segment has become to Sony Corporation.

I'm not sure how anyone can look at Sonys business and think a successor is launching next year

Ive said it beofre and ill say it again, PS5 will absolutely, not in a million years launch in 2019. My 2020 prediction has long been embedded.

I think there is still a possibility of PS5 launching in 2019. While cutting the PS4 short is costly, giving a competitor 1 year head start to themselves at the start of next gen is even more costly.

I really think ps3 was an outlier and launch aligned it still outsold the 360 even with Sony messing up

And I bet Kodera loses sleep over that imbalance too.

He's got an incredibly difficult console transition to make - probably more difficult than any that's come before it given the divergent nature of the market between mobile, fixed & streaming + all the consumer facing stuff like crossplay & BC.

They seek to keep the momemtum from the PS4 looking at recent job openings. So it doesnt matter if they sell PS4's or PS5's in the millions as long as they have the momemtum.

a quarter of their entire business. More than 1/3rd of their profit.

But it has also to do that they failed on their Mobile Division. Which they wanted to be one of the pillars of the revamped Sony. and its really mind-boggling that how spectacularly they succeed in their Gaming Division and how spectacularly they failed in their Mobile Division.

I think I remember reading this somewhere, Sony didn't want a year where PS4 is on it's way out while PS5 is still starting out resulting in lower hardware sales year. they want a more smoother transition where PS4 hardware is still selling well when they sell PS5. or something like that

i'm 99.99% certain that Sony will make the PS5 backward compatible with PS4 and makes it for PS4 owner to transition to PS5. No way they are gonna throw all this momentum away and restart from scratch.

The PS5 will just be a Ultra PS4 Pro Turbo: Championship Edition EX+Alpha

The reason they keep the mobile division is so that they have the technology foundation for 5G in the future. It's basically a loss-leader for them to retain some measure of in-house expertise of important mobile technology instead of basically having no internal 5G expertise.
