I can see a General Nintendo Direct that ends with a Smash character announcement, then teasing a Smash-focused Direct for later in the month. This is what happened with Cloud in 2015, although there was a distance of 33 days between both presentations.
Yeah. If the first direct is a general Direct then a reveal like Incineroar solo reveal makes sense due to how popular Pokemon is, with the rest coming in the Smash direct.

Depends on where Incineroar is on the banner. If he's in the same spot as one of the other Grinch newcomers then something crazy would be going on.

Kinda what I'm thinking. The two characters revealed in general Directs, Inkling and Isabelle, appeal to a broader audience than Ridley and K.Rool.

See I'm conflicted. Smash direct first would make more sense to get all the info out there, and then advertising more Nintendo games coming next year a bit later in the month.
But, then, it could also be that they don't want to take too much spotlight off of Smash closer to launch, and so do the Smash direct second.

It's kind of all over the place. There has been plenty of talk/expectation of a Smash Direct this week, so that's basically a given.
As others have said, it could be a Mario Kart Mobile Direct. They need to discuss and show it eventually. They could have a general Direct but they certainly don't need it. Hell, they could have a Let's Go Direct before launch but they don't really need that either.

If that's the case then I'm not sure it can definitively be Mario Kart. They just released Dragalia Lost and it's not even out everywhere. I can see Mario Kart in January.

Actually since the fiscal earnings stuff is tonight, we'll probably hear something about Mario Kart Mobile sometime this week...at least we should.
With Nintendo Live 2018 starting this weekend and Sakurai RT the event with Smash Bros Ultimate featured, I do still think a Smash Direct is likely this week.
What I mean is why do people think it would be a Mario Kart focused Direct instead of something more varied?

General directs are above any other direct, even something as big as Smash.
you sure you're not confusing being against it, versus thinking it 100% won't happen...?
Just trying to not get people's hopes up for something with Smash in it. Even then we just got Dragalia Lost released and it hasn't gotten a full world wide release yet. I don't think it's Mario Kart.

Between the tournament and the bundle launch, there is plenty reason to expect something Smash this week.
Nah I meant like why have Incineroar be the end of a general Direct after all the other characters were revealed? Would be kinda underwhelming in my mind.

honestly I'm surprised Little Mac wasn't an E3 reveal given how overwhelmingly western-focused his popularity is
