(I know Vertigo is DC, but I not in the "DC Universe" way I think OP means)

Telltale also did a (frankly pretty awful) adaptation of Jeff Smith's BONE, but this was ages ago now, and it was before they really perfected their formula.

I've heard some people on here say it wasn't that bad, but as a huge fan of this comic this was a pretty big let-down. I would do anything for a 3D, open world Zelda-like game set in the world of BONE!

Isn't the GTA they put in this the one you can get for free on Rockstar's website?

WTF. How have I never heard about this?

It was apparently only released in the double pack pictured. I imagine it didn't have a very large run, but it was one of a half dozen or so Sega CD games I had. I'm pretty sure it had a bunch of digital comics included on the disc, which may have been the entire run of Prime up to then.

edit: Even though nobody remembers this game, somebody played through the entire thing (including some reaaaal gooood Sega CD FMV with comic writers) on Youtube the better part of a decade ago:

The Red Star on PS2. Nowhere near as awesome as the Image series was, however. Just another PS2 brawler.

I said it wasn't memorable, and I lied.

This is the Ultraverse Prime theme song:

The popup info is obviously added by the Youtube channel, but...that's the real song and those are the real lyrics.

edit:

There was a bad Sega CD beat-em-up based on the bad Malibu Comics superhero Prime, but its theme song by Tim Follin is seven and a half minutes of top-notch cheese.

He's gonna get himself some justice!

I missed this post entirely. Which I really think is appropriate given the subject, but credit where credit's due. This song justifies reminiscing about this mediocre beat em up.

I dunno if I'd usually think of them as comic books, but how about the Tintin games? There have been a few, I think, though the only one I'm familiar with is the GBC one:

Similarly, there's that one Asterix game on GBA that's famous for being 3D:

Ex-Mutants
Dinosaurs for Hire
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Jim Lee's W.I.L.D.C.A.T.S.
Spawn
...
Scud: The Disposable Assassin

Just to name a few. There have been many...

I loved Scud so much as a kid. Called Dan Harmon, Rob Schrab, and Firemen Press; ordered everything they sold; mailed them dolls of their characters I'd sewn.

Spawn for dreamcast.
Its a shame 3D Brawlers died with Dreamcast. Capcom released two very good games on that genre for the system. Spawn in the Demon's Hand, and Heavy Metal: Geomatrix. The last one is actually based on an Magazine by Grant Morrison, not a comicbook per-se, but almost!

There was a video game based on The Mask. Although it was based on the movie, the movie itself was based on the original comic book by Doug Mahnke.

The comic book is not what you would expect if you've only seen the movie...

Any cool lesser-known comics that would make good RPGs that would be easy to license? Just asking.

Steve Percell's Sam and Max
-not sure how related to the comics it actually is, but it is based on it

KISS Psycho Circus - Nightmare Child
-Based on the Todd McFarlane comic of the same name, based on the album Psycho Circus
-it's boxart is probably the high mark, it's not a great shooter

I don't know how easy the licensing would be [i think it's dormant], (actually it might be pretty hard I think wild storm is dc now) but a stormwatch tactical rpg like Xcom would be great, a squad of super powered heroes that get sent around the globe to handle international incidents.

Turok is based on a comic

The cell-shaded FPS, XIII, is based on a french comic.

The Darkness.

Another case of being licensed from a film adaptation, but there is the Rocketeer game for the NES and SNES

And of course, by that logic one could be pedantic and say that all TMNT games are based on comics (though most take after one adaptation or another.)
But there are games based off frequent Turtles guest Usagi. A Commodore 64 game and much, much later a mobile brawler.

Rebellion own almost all the 2000AD properties and I believe they are open to licencing them.

While there core titles are probably too expensive there are 30+ years of other titles.

One of my old favourites is the Luke Kirby stories. A kind off Harry Potter/Tiffany Aching mash up long before either existed.

The problem with many older comic book properties is that their rights are tangled up with massive companies these days. Turok, which was mentioned earlier in this thread, is currently being worked on by Dynamite, if I am not mistaken, who license it from DreamWorks Classics. So I think the "easiest" would be to license a creator-owned series.

I think Rat Queens would be quite ideal for the kind of games you guys make.

Another series that would lend itself to the party-based RPG approach would be Mouse Guard

mouse-guard-548x277.jpg

I think there's a board game and a PnP RPG already as well.

or Descender in a Star Ocean style ;)

Both are from image though so unsure how hard it would be to get licensing.
WHY DID YOU HAVE TO MENTION ORC STAIN?!?!?! I'M STILL WAITING FOR IT TO CONTINUE DAMNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT

Good reminder I have still never played this . Just rehooked my PS3 back up and downloading now. Worth reading the comic book before this?
Absolutely. The game is as fun as you can expect from an beat em'up (although it can be a little repetive and kinda hard at times), and has a lot of references to comic books and videogames in general. Highly recommend to play with a friend!

Smurfs for master system was cool.
Benoît Sokal games count? Iirc Amerzone was based on a comic.
Isn't there a Corto Maltese p&c adventure as well?
And, do you count manga based games? Because there might be one or two
