And damn, if noticing that the mother was there on the top corner of the screen wasn't just terrifying.
This was the part that caused my wife to scream. It was also the part that finally broke me. I was keeping a stiff upper lip until this scene and I immediately became a whimpering baby. Regardless of the story, the last 15 minutes or so of the film are masterful in terms of just a constant onrush of horror built up over the course of 70 minutes or so.

Good lord there are a lot of takes in this thread but this one stands out since it dismisses the two best horror films of the decade in one go. Seriously, do people just like jump scare horror at this point?
I like horror films with decent music and stories that aren't pretentious. I'm not a fan of films that just go for jump scares so calm down cunt

Just saw it tonight. Was thinking to myself it was great then came to read the Era thread and of course half the people hate it.

I feel like there is absolutely a read where the family is just nuts. That the supernatural stuff is imagined by Annie and her mother's bloodline. Annie sets her husband on fire. Peter kills his mother. And so on.

I want to watch it again because I feel like there's more going on with the use of dioramas, fixed destiny, the possession refracted lights and ripple effect, etc.

saw this last weekend going in completely blind. never even saw a trailer, just knew people were all WTF?-ing over it

it was good and all but... not really sure what the fuss is about (good and bad). seemed like a relatively run of mill horror movie, albeit a very competently written and directed one

What do you mean "WTF did I just watch"? The producers added a voice in post that explains everything that is happening during the last scene... that wasn't enough?

Yes I am a bit salty about that choice.

Toni Collette was fucking amazing in this. I've never really given her much thought as an actress but she went to some dark fucking places for this role. In this scene here I preemptively tried to shield my heart from the blood-curdling scream I knew was coming.

It didn't work.
Toni Collette has always been one of the greats. United States of Tara was the first thing I really saw her give everything in and despite it getting cheesy from time to time is still a role she commanded and did the multiple characters thing just as well as Tatiana Masalany in Orphan Black, just years before.

Again the voice over is to finally hammer home the film's core theme of intergenerational dictatorship. Check my post on the second page.

I felt the same until I did some more reading and thinking about it and watched it again

It's not about explaining anything, certainly not plot, it's a thematic and symbolic voice

I loved this movie. Because of this thread, I just bought the movie on Vudu and am going to watch it tonight.

Side note - if you like Toni Collette (I've loved her since I saw her in "I'm not nothing!" Muriel's Wedding) check out Wanderlust on Netflix. She did an AMAZING job in that.

The morning after was the craziest part for me. Just hearing the mom in the background finishing her morning breakfast and getting ready to go work like shes gonna have the most normal day.

I hate every time I'm reminded of this sequence. It's one of the reasons I would never, ever want to rewatch the movie. It just filled with me such nauseating, discomforting second-hand guilt. Maybe it's because it reminds me of the times I'd hear my mother's reactions to something I had or hadn't done without having directly faced her impending wrath yet, or the anticipation of such things happening, compounded by the awfulness of the event. It takes me back to a place I never want to go back to.

Why? How? Nothing in the scenes hinted that would happen. The movie was clearly making it seem like she was going to sacrifice herself. You'd have to deliberately assume that the demon was just tricking her in the prior scene to expect that to happen to the husband

I don't know why but I saw that coming too. I just knew she was gonna suffer more and become more crazy. Maybe because I first assumed that it would be the person who threw it in the fire who would burn. But when he refused I was like "yeah no he's gonna burn anyway and she's gonna snap".
Rewatched the movie. In hindsight, the first classroom scene basically establishes the drama and horror of the movie
...It's more tragic because if all is inevitable, then that means the characters have no hope. They never had hope because they are all like...hopeless. They are like pawns on this horrible hopelss machine."
This has become one of the most tired tropes for me. In every movie with school scenes, often in horror ones, the themes are spelled out or foreshadowed in a classroom, in an excruciating detailed manner.
If you need an analysis of a movie, just check if there's a classroom scene and you'll have it. I guess I'm becoming more and more annoyed by heavy handed expositions and info dumps. That's not a big deal though, most of the time I think it's funny but it can take some of the fun away too on a first viewing because it's so obvious.

I fucking love Ann Dowd but I really did not need that off-screen exposition speech right at the end. It was so unnecessary.
Yeah I don't care if was a choice to hammer down the thematic or whatever, the last minute alone prevent it from being a classic to me. I loved the movie but the last seconds pissed me off, I thought until that point the movie didn't take me for a fucking idiot. The book with the highlighted passage was more than enough, I was even a bit iffy on that, but it could have been fine if that was it...

All GF and I can say about this is, this is the most Protestant film ever made. Coming from a Catholic tradition country, the whole thing is just hilarious for me.

One of the best movies of the year.

  1. Mandy
  2. Hereditary
  3. A Quiet Place

Not sure how my top 3 so far are horror, but damn it's been a good year for the genre.

They are all 3 definitely in my top 10. but I'm biased towards horror. There's so few good ones that when one is really good I probably rate it higher than I should.

Just saw this... got dark quick in a way that felt far too real. Toni Colette really was amazing. Didn't know Ann Dowd was in this. As soon as I saw her I knew it was over for that family.

I think I need to lie down now.

Sorry for the bump, but this was on Prime and gave it a watch.

This movie is uncomfortable as fuck and earned the ending payoff.

I might be used to "traditional" horror movies, but throughout this, I kept waiting for a jump scare that never happens lol.

Just watched this in HDR on my new OLED. Kinda disappointing that this version really crushed the shadow detail eliminating the opportunity to spot

Annie hiding in the background of numerous scenes and making the ghost of grandma pretty much invisible during an early scene.

In theaters those details creeped me the fuck out.

Maybe because you saw it in HDR when it's a Dolby Vision disc (unless it was through Prime and they don't offer the DV version or something)?

I had no problem spotting Annie or the ghosts on my TV.

I have a feeling all the people that didn't like it are watching it in their living room with like a lamp or something on and some sort of background noise from people on their phones and shit while it's playing.

Watching this in the theater was a hell of an experience. Legitimately one of my favorite horror movies of all time. But I haven't watched it at home yet.

I'm a big horror fan, but this movie was a 6/10 horror for me.. great acting, first half of the movie really good, some really great and memorable scenes but then there's the second half.. and no matter how hard your gonna try, you just can't make people crawling on walls or ceilings scary for me.. they always, always look laughable in a very bad way.. watched in a almost full theater and in many scenes in the second half of the movie, people were like really loudly laughing

Watched it a few days ago.

I thought it was okay. The aftermath scene of the car accident was amazing, but thats probably also the only scene I found memorable.

I liked the family drama part of it but I feel the horror elements were a collection of horror cliches. Now theres not necessarily anything wrong with cliches and they can be hard to avoid in the horror genre, but it kinda felt to me like they just took a bunch of horror tropes and threw them in the movie because reasons.

Overall, a very good ride with a dissatisfying ending.

I'm not a connoisseur of the Horror genre but I can't see how anyone could rate this on par with The Witch.

This film also perfects the feeling of waking up in the night and seeing that since you've been asleep the clothes over the back of your chair have in fact become a hooded demonic figure.

The bit where he thinks Milly is standing there before her head falls off and becomes a bowling ball/football is brilliant.

First horror movie in a long time thats making it hard for me to go to sleep.

So many damn moments and images are just stuck in my head.

Yeah.

Its a fantastic horror film in a lot of ways but they laid out the exposition too clearly/bluntly at the end.

Give bits and pieces, don't just spell it out like they did.

Saw it last night. Toni Collette deserves an Oscar. Best acting in 2018, easily. If she doesn't win, I'm gonna be furious. It was so nice to see Gabriel Byrne again. All the actors did a terrific job. Overall a great horror movie with some of the best music in a horror film. There were no jump scares, which is amazing.

What was up with Charlie? Why was she such a weirdo? Why did she take the crow's head that slammed into the window? I'm not sure if she was already possessed or not. Besides the obvious link between Charlie's death and the downward spiral of the family, I couldn't find anything else that connected her with what was going on. The scene with grandma and Annie kneeling without a head was so fucking disturbing. Was it proven what Gabriel Byrn's character said, that Annie dug up grandma's body? Also how did the naked fellas got up in the attic?

All Hail Paimon.

Edit: also the miniatures that Annie worked on. Did those have any relevance? I like how the camera shots made us believe the entire family was in one of Annie's miniatures. But is there anything beyond that?
