The game feels like a chore to play which is really unfortunate and new to me as a huge fan of GTA IV/V and RDR; but I have managed to keep on because I like the story. I don't see myself exploring the world like I did with those games unless something drastic changes though, despite it being a technical and artistic marvel it isn't very much fun to actually play.

I was in your shoes OP even around the beginning of chapter 2 but then it just clicked with me. My advice is try to be extra patient with it. The pacing, the controls and the realism is a tough pill to swallow but once you mastered how much micromanaging you need to do in order to enjoy the game it gets immensely better. These things actually compliment the setting and the players immersion really well.

Also accepting the fact that you are not going to finish it anytime soon helps.

Edit: I also recommend checking out some guides and tips to get a better understanding on how the different mechanics work and how much time should you spend on them.

I'm about three or four hours in and for all it's lavish production values, it feels awful whenever you try to actually interact with the world.

Clunky movement, sluggish combat and far too many options to house on one controller without multiple weapon wheels, etc.

The hand-to-hand combat is simply dreadful and I'm bored of squinting to see tiny little icons on the left of my screen and a litany of context sensitive actions on the right.

But worst of all the mission design is just as dull as dishwater, with filler content at every turn - popping a wheel back on a vehicle, or pulling someone's trapped leg off a train... who cares?

But you can pick up your hat and read a brochure in the shop, provided you can fumble around to get to the counter.

Read Dead Redemption 2 - when ambition trumps fun.

I've never felt such a strong negative reaction to game. The opening 20 minutes of GTAV introduced heists, character switching, combat, driving and set up the story.

I'm a few hours into RDR2 and it's just trotting along, introducing meaningless mechanic after meaningless mechanic - it's all busy work.

I heard the beginning was slow, but bloody hell.

Sorry everyone, just had to vent. I'm glad for those who are enjoying it and despite my harsh words I'm going to push on and hopefully end up having a blast myself.

No, after a slow start (which I still enjoyed) where I was struggling with controls and occasional minor bugs, it has started to completely immerse me.

I'm the opposite, can't put it down. Quite comfortably my favourite game this gen. Thank god I had this week off as it would have been torture being at work all day, just wanting to get home and play.
I'm curious, since all 3 of you seem enamored with the game, what are your main criticisms, if any?.
The controls. Combat wise I've gotten used to it but it's still annoying navigating tight spaces and trying to pick up/interact with certain objects.

The game could have also done a much better job at explaining some of it's systems.

I can't wait to get home and turn it on.

A man killed my horse....I fucking loved that horse. So I gave chase, long the way I get bit by a rattlesnake. Now I'm pissed. With poison coursing through my body I lasso this idiot. He is copping pleas while I hog tie him. I start walking north....just me....him....and open plains. This idiot killed my best friend I had for 10 hours....I watched it skid off a cliffside.

We eventually get to some train tracks and place him down a top of them. This is the justice deserved for killing my friend. As the train smashed into his body I start to think about how will I get back to camp? I walked....all the way back.. my stamina bar is almost full now.

I'm a big time AC fan and I procrastinated on finishing RDR1 until September 2018, but I put Odyssey on hold after a couple hours and can't wait to put another hour into RDR2 tonight.

So nah, I don't feel you.

Main criticisms so far are:

The bounty system seems a bit hit or miss.
The speed at which you walk around camp, please just let me sprint.
Some of the systems aren't explained very well in game.

But I feel the setting, atmosphere and overall scope make up for any of the shortcomings I've encountered so far.

No way. The start is very slow as it confines you to one small area of the map as it uses it for a tutorial section/to set up the story, but once you are allowed to go anywhere on the map the game becomes fun. I even enjoy the hunting. Stalking your prey and going for the clean kill is really satisfying.

This is the best crafted open world game yet, and every NPC feels like they've been put in a specific spot for a purpose. The controls are a bit sluggish/annoying but to be honest you kind of get used to it. Aiming is bad but I just use the lock on so it doesn't really bother me too much.

Planning to pick it up soon but my hype and expectations are (and always have been) in check. I liked RDR for the exploration and world design, but westerns are not my thing at all.

I get that. JFC can't anyone respond anymore without being a snarky dick? What I'm saying is that I KNOW what happens to many of these characters based on the first game, and most of them are indeed irredeemable. Arthur especially makes it really difficult to connect with him.

Defensiveness is predictable...

On topic, I've only put about six hours in, finally rocked up in chapter two, and it could go either way. Certain aspects are really impressive and the depth to which some of these mechanics have been taken is ambitious to say the least. However, I can see some of it beginning to wear over the course of a play-through. Some people I've seen argue that 'all this is optional, you can do the main quests without it' to which I'm inclined to reply 'then why make it open world'?

We'll see, it might be that these vibe with me, but I can say at present that I agree with the general sentiment that gun play and movement generally feel less engaging than what is typically par for the course these days.

I love it. Really reminds me of Shenmue in a lot of ways.

I'd be playing right now but my PS4 overheated.

The options out there for huge open world games where you ride around on a horse are virtually endless. What's the next epic open world horse riding game coming out?

Its boring me to tears after playing a few hours. Controls are so bad compared to polished movement like Botw.

I dunno, I never liked rockstars games so I'm not the audience

Rockstars trademark obtuse controller scheme is my biggest complaint so far. Even when I can switch the scheme of the controller it means little cause horses still use the regular scheme, so I was constantly fucking up when I switched between the two.

I agree with you in some of the complains, like the controls and the realism, but the game is amazing, im in love with the characters and the storytelling is so great that i cannot drop it. I think it's like a great show that i cannot stop watching, more than a game i cannot stop playing.

The big thing keeping me going is the genuine chemistry Dutch's group has amongst itself. I'm hoping for more stuff like the Lenny Saloon "mission". I find the gameplay and controls to be really outdated, otherwise.

So I've read many impressions on the game over this weekend. People saying this is another GTA 4 situation are wrong...RDR2 seems to be divisive from day one, it took definitely more time for GTA 4 to reach that level.

People have accepted that Rockstar is stubborn about the controls/movement and have grown to tolerate it while the biggest critics of Rockstar's controls since GTA 4 have just stopped playing their games.
I was stupid enough to buy RDR1 and GTAV. Complete waste of money, and RDR2 sounds like the worst of those games turned up to 11. I might've even fallen for the pre-release hype if I hadn't gotten into the Project Stream beta right before release. AC Odyssey has been great so far.

Its telling when close to half of the posts call it a chore and others are bored. Glad I didnt pick it up at full price as I got bored of RDR 1 and didnt finish it. I'll get it at a discount when it hits 40 or so.

I can see RDR2 becoming a popular game that's popular to hate on ala Fallout 4.

It's obvious with the slow pacing and simulation systems that R* made a game that isn't for everyone, but its AAA roots will lead many to think it's supposed to be. Many may wonder why the dev didn't cater to a more mainstream instant-gratification gameplay loop and I suspect there will be blow-back because of this.

But much like Fallout 4 those who love it will really LOVE it, and those who hate it will really HATE it. RDR2 will sell tons, win awards, and some will just sit & wonder why.

Yeah, I kinda bounced off of it. I bought Battlefield 1 recently and whenever I turn on the PS4 to play RDR2 I end up playing a few games of BF1. Outside of the absolutely gorgeous world I'm simply not enjoying Red Dead. Even the very natural writing isn't drawing me in. Hell, for some weird reason it's making me want to go back to BOTW again. I'll probably try to get into red dead again somewhere in the future.

The input lag and garbage controls really need to be picked up on more, Rockstar are so far behind with this shit.

I think someone really should have made a thread detailing the extensive control options available. For me moving sprint over to L3 and adjusting both the stick acceleration and dead zones made all the difference.

Really enjoying the game. Pulled me away from AC:O. Does the game have its issues?Sure but not enough to keep me away.

i find myself thinking only about this game. I cannot wait to play it today after work with a drink! I am totally immersed into the camp features and roaming the world. I love being a part of it and experiencing the dialogue. The incidental moments or dynamic events or situations are amazing.

God of War and Spider Man are amazing on their own, but this takes things to a different level

I don't think people realize how much detail there is in terms of setting things up in the game. The reason you break your wheel on the wagon for instance is to have the other ones set up camp before you get there. And it also establishes Arthur as the guy who gets things fixed. To top it off there's also a neat moment in that scene with the indians looking down on them and Charles starting to talk about his past.

Charles also has a hand injury in the beginning, which is a plot device to get Arthur to handle a bow and skin an animal. And it's also used in order to give Arthur a horse in the beginning without introducing the bond mechanic immediately. That's why Arthur thanks Charles for the horse the next day. But these are details that most people don't think about and they all play a pretty big part in keeping things going and making situations a bit more logical.

Why do so many people here think their opinions about RDR2 are too important for the OT?
It's getting great praise from everyone, so, as is the case with every popular and critically acclaimed game before it (Breath of the Wild for example), people feel that they need to ensure even more people hear about their negative feelings. A thread like this is more likely to garner attention than a post in the very active OT.

But to answer the OP, it's the most I've been immersed in a game since Wtcher 3. I truly think that this game is one of the best ever made so far based on the 20-25 hours I've put into it.

I'm really enjoying it. The controls are a bit sluggish, but they're no worse than The Witcher 3's on launch.

I can definitely understand it not appealing to people though. You have to be willing to slow down and play at the game's pace.

No. I'm not a fan of the controls but it's improved over gtav by a bit and I find the gunplay to be better.

Fucking love this game. Love how slow it takes it. I only wish the HDR was better. Can't wait to get home and play more.

I was super excited for this game and after the first hour I had to stop to take a nap.

After I got out of the into though I played it for like eight hours straight, which I never do, abd then did the same thing again yesterday. Now I'm at work and can't stop thinking about it. I've barely scratched the surface even though I've put in like 15 hours over the weekend because I've just been wandering around, taking to locals, and hunting. I should probably continue the story tonight.
