It looks neat but every big update always does then I load it up, get stuck on a lifeless brown desert planet, give it a few hours before I realise that the new stuff just made it wider not deeper and I delete it yet again.

The disappointment from that first initial experience has just absolutely killed this game in my mind.

Cool that it's free. They really must have made bank on that initial game release if they have the money to not charge for content updates like this lol
I assume they did as it was a full priced game that sold well and they are a tiny team. They've earned a lot of goodwill with these updates too so even though there was a sharp decline in sales after launch I bet they've done well in sales and stuff since then.

Yes as I quoted you.

Maybe don't jump to conclusions and I won't either :).

1. I wasn't hating on the game at all, so your weirdly defensive and accusatory post was pretty darn confusing . But I guess seeing as you brought it up. I take it you don't think that people were suckered into buying this game? I mean it's not like Sean Murray lied about, and implied a ton of incorrect stuff about the ga- oh wait yes he did.

2. How am I jumping to conclusion about them making a lot of money from the initial game? They're able to put out free content updates, the gane was made by a tiny team, sold at full price, and did very well in terms of sales.

I want to be excited, but I fear they've shown off everything in that short trailer already :/

Your first ruin/crashed freighter? That's a thing. Then you see the exact same design, with the exact same features, over and over again...

Does it have an option to disable 4k yet on pro? Damn game made it go full jet engine last time. I never even got more than 3-4 minutes in since it doesn't even ramp down at all

God bless the underwater jet packs... I love exploring underwater, but traversal has always been a little tedious.

I'm waiting for this game on sale on Xbox. It looks very good. I can pick up a copy for $20 on ps4 but still $50 on xbox.

Can someone please explain: isn't base building antithetical to the game's underlying premise of moving from planet to planet and never going back?

I'm interested in getting this soon, do I only need to get the base game that's been available for a while? Or are there paid expansions and more stuff? I held off on buying this because of the inicial reception, but I've seen the turnaround and I really want to try it now.

You only need the base game. All the updates have been free

Even before launch Sean was saying that players could ignore the journey to the centre of the galaxy and stay put if they wanted, using trading between local star systems for profit as an example. Base building might be antithetical to the journey to the centre of the galaxy - though base building is also possible on your freighter too, so you can technically still do both to a degree - but it is congruous with the game's survival/sandbox nature. It's a feature a lot of people wanted in the game prior to launch as well.

Edit: portals also make it easy to continue exploring while maintaining a base.

Looks so much like Subnautica (which is a good thing as that game in brilliant). Interested to see the types of predators people get.

Don't get me started on this shit lol.

Yeah the original intent was to moved to the center of the Galaxy for some profound end of the journey. Turns out there isn't shit there and it just boots you to another galaxy entirely. Hardly anybody goes there anymore. Most folks just go to the Hubs now

I mean, they have a studio of like 30 people, and it sold something like a million copies, so they certainly made enough money to keep the studio open for a few years.

I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised to see all of this tech eventually make it into a new game, and this content serves as both the test bed, and the "redemption" to give the studio some good will fandom.

Not really. You still need to go to new solar systems and planets to get resources or find exotic ships, or specific ecosystems / economies for trade, etc. There is still a shit ton of exploration, only now you can build a base where you can store all those supplies, build a farm, and craft your own resources. They go hand in hand, more than anything.

Finally, they did something with the oceans! I'm apprehensive of any big update to this game though, given it's up-and-down history with performance issues (on PC). NEXT dropped the framerate on planets to a low I've not seen since the awful launch state of the game and it's only in the last couple of experimental updates that I've seen an improvement, albeit a significant one, bumping performance back to more or less where it was prior to NEXT.
That's positive if they're fixing the performance. I got the game after NEXT but was so unimpressed by the horrifically uneven stuttering and frame dropping that I refunded. Granted, my rig isn't going to play the game with all the bells and whistles but I couldn't deal with how choppy the game was. If that's out of the way I might buy the game again.

Not really into underwater stuff but more free content is always good. Have they said for how long they're gonna keep updating the game? I'd love it if they're start focus on combat and and alien/creatures encounters for the next updates.

Anyways, cant wait to go back haven't played since the Atlas update.

I was 100% right about what The Abyss would be in the preview thread. As a super fan of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, this may be the best update for me.

This game is so awesome.

I think there's always going to be some stutter and frame drops in there, especially when entering planet atmospheres. My main concern is overall performance, because moving around a planet at below 30 fps (below 20 fps in extreme cases!) wasn't a pleasant experience. The patch notes for the second to last experimental update prior to Abyss mentioned optimisations to certain biomes and I assume it's that which gave the game a big boost in performance (for me).

I'm playing the PC version right now and I've not noticed any abnormal performance issues so far, so that's good. I haven't gotten to an ocean planet yet though.

You are meant to keep exploring distant planets but you are able to always teleport back to your base and to any space station you have visited.

Regarding the update, it'd be nice if they fixed base allies not sitting or standing where they are supposed to be.

I hope they toned down the grind. I played NMS at release and making enough money was a horrible experience. I never played it again. :(

Played it for a while after the last major update and enjoyed it. I shelved it for a while, but it's great that they keep adding more ideas and improving variety. Will check it out.

This game has the makings of something really special, but it always feels so damn grindy to actually play it. This game needs more things that are based off of skill instead of grind.

  • Improved water visuals at night.
  • Removed a hard pixelated edge seen at the edge of water.
Can anyone post a screenshot of of water at night? I don't have the game installed anymore but this always bothered me.

So all of the datamining that was supposedly about the dragonfly vehicle turn out to be about the nautilon instead?
