Played it in VR yesterday and OH MY GOD. It was a freaking spirtual experience and I can still remember the exact feeling. No hyperbole, my jaw was wide open the whole time. It's so damn engrossing to lose yourself in a game of Tetris while the god like sound design consumes your attention and insane effects reward skillful play. I didn't know Tetris would be the game that would sell me on VR but jeez, Tetris Effect is something special.

Got to play it at MCM London over the weekend and I can echo this statement. Getting that 8 Zone Lines and the whole game going in Inverse Mode is a mindblowing thing to experience in VR. Don't sleep on this.

Enhance Games just released a TON of info about this game. We got a heads-up in advance but didn't write it up, but because I know y'all are down for some Tetris clownin', here's the press release they just put out (not on their own blogs/twitters yet). TL;DR - the game ships with five "modes," and four of them have sub-modes.

JOURNEY MODE
This is the main campaign and the heart of Tetris Effect. After choosing from one of three difficulties (Beginner, Normal, Expert), players journey through a series of stages, each with their own theme, graphics, music, sound effects, etc. all of which sync to the gameplay.

EFFECT MODES
These are all the other modes in the game – a collection of varying setups and rules designed to evoke different moods the player might be in (or want to be in), as well as varying skill levels.

Effect Modes are divided into four categories based loosely on what "effect" the player is meant to come away with, i.e. chill out with "Relax," concentrate with "Focus," enjoy the familiarity / nostalgia of "Classic" modes, or try something unique with "Adventurous."

A full list of all the Effect Modes follows, grouped by category and including a short explanation for each:
1. EFFECT MODE CATEGORY: CLASSIC

MARATHON MODE
Get the best score you can within a 150-Line limit.

ULTRA MODE
Get the best score you can within three minutes.

SPRINT MODE
Clear 40 lines as fast as you can.

MASTER MODE
Insanely fast Tetris. Not for the faint of heart.

2. EFFECT MODE CATEGORY: RELAX

CHILL MARATHON MODE
A more relaxed version of Marathon with no Game Over. If the Tetriminos reach the top of the Matrix (play field), they are removed from the board, leaving it empty again.

QUICK PLAY MODE
Play through any single stage you choose with no Game Over.

PLAYLIST MODE: SEA
Submerge yourself in four aquatic stages with a new, continuous track of specially designed relaxing ambient music.

PLAYLIST MODE: WIND
Glide through four windy stages with a new, continuous track of specially designed relaxing ambient music.

PLAYLIST MODE: WORLD
Explore four diverse stages with a new, continuous track of specially designed relaxing ambient music.

3. EFFECT MODE CATEGORY: FOCUS
ALL CLEAR MODE
Earn as many All Clears as you can before time runs out. Each All Clear will return some time back to the clock.

COMBO MODE
Earn as many Combos as you can before time runs out. Each successful Combo run will return some time back to the clock.

TARGET MODE
Clear as many Target Blocks as you can before time runs out. Each set of Target Blocks cleared will return some time back to the clock.

4. EFFECT MODE CATEGORY: ADVENTUROUS

COUNTDOWN MODE
Use automatically-falling I-Tetriminos to score line clears and bonus points.

PURIFY MODE
Clear as many Dark Blocks as you can within three minutes. You can clear Dark Blocks by clearing the line that they are on, and / or by scoring multiple line clears, combos, etc.
MYSTERY MODE
Try to survive a Marathon session as random effects (some good, most bad) keep popping up.

To clarify: "countdown mode" will only dole out I-line pieces automatically, dropping them wherever the game senses your biggest gaps in your board. It's your job to otherwise build the board to make room for I-line drops. And Combo and Purify modes look the most interesting in action, since they encourage you to clear out specific pieces and rack up single-line clears at a crazy rate—meaning, they truly make you play a different game of Tetris within the game's familiar framework. Very clever. The b-roll we got of these new modes looks great, and I hope they put it out soon.

Oh, more info on the limited-time demo:

The Tetris® Effect: Weekend Trial Demo will be available for download on the PlayStation®Store starting Thursday, November 1st and run until the morning of Monday, November 5th. (Note: This is a true limited-time demo—once it's deactivated on November 5th, the demo will no longer be playable or available for download. Because of this, an online connection is required to play the demo, though it's not required for the final game.) As with the final game, the Weekend Trial Demo is fully playable in 2D, including 4K resolution and HDR support on PS4™Pro, or optionally in VR.
The Tetris Effect: Weekend Trial Demo consists of three stages of the main "Journey Mode" campaign (FYI: 27 total Journey Mode stages in the final game), as well as two "Effect Modes" (FYI: 10+ in the final game): Marathon Mode and Mystery Mode. These modes are explained in greater detail below, along with all the other Effect Modes.
Also, a special "Weekend Ritual" event will run for 24 hours over the demo weekend (starting 12pm UTC on Saturday, November 3rd), during which all players of the Weekend Trial Demo can play a specified mode to earn points towards a Community Goal. If 100% of that Community Goal is reached in the 24 hour period, a special in-game avatar will unlock for all players who participated in the event, which is usable in the demo only. A Weekend Ritual event like this will run every weekend once the full Tetris Effect game launches on November 9th, spotlighting different Effect Modes each week.

There's no endless mode? Guess I'm sticking to Ubi Tetris for now. PPT endless is too easy that a scrub like me can go infinite at the fastest levels.

I think the primary "journey" mode is endless, but that's unclear w/ the language above. I can't imagine the Tetris Company would let this ship without some sort of endless or high-level, keeps-going mode.

Did anyone else in the US pre-order the game from Best Buy? They just updated their release date from the 9th to the 16th, but it doesn't look like it's changed elsewhere. Haven't chatted with customer service yet to see if this is just an error or if they're really getting it a week later than everyone else. Has anyone else looked into this?

Tetris for ants?

I'm exaggerating, but eh... I was really hoping the play field would be bigger when playing non-VR. I get why it's not, though. I'll definitely be playing the free trial to see if it still bothers me when playing.

You have some camera control. Zoom plus tilt/roll on the sticks. Works in both normal and VR modes.

If you press L3+R3, you can zoom in the view.

Wow. These new previews look great. I want to combine the purchase with Déraciné and take advantage of my 20% off PSN coupon, but I can't pre-order if I go that route. I also don't want to miss out on the theme and preorder bonus stuff! Tough decision.

Edit- Ah, seems like I would only miss out on the extra discount and the soundtrack sampler if I wait for launch to take advantage of a full cart discount with my coupon code. I can live with that, I mainly just want the theme!

I'm a huge Tetris fan, but I'm actually going to wait and see what kind of options there are when you're playing on a TV. In the footage I've seen, the game field takes up wayyyyy too little of the screen for my liking.

I understand the reasoning is that the visual effects need space and are an important part of what they're going for with this game, but that might make it a pass for me, personally.
I watched the Giant Bomb Quick Unfinished EX today and play matrix can be zoomed in and out. That image is simply way zoomed out. https://youtu.be/3baBsLLtsLw

m0dus is there a video of the theme yet ? I'm broke so I don't want to pre-order but if it's an amazing theme like the Rez infinite themes I will pre-order the game.

Or will the theme be available separately later like with Rez infinite ?

No vs mode is kind of a bummer, but I guess I already have Puyo Tetris and everyone already plays Tetris in that game anyways.

I bought a PSVR a couple weeks ago because of what I played of this at E3 back in June. This was the game I was most excited about from Sony's booth, and that includes Spider-Man (though I should say that I've liked the retail release of Spidey waaay more than the demo).

Do I have to preorder the game to get the theme?

Also, any chance for this being physically released?

Really excited to play, bummer about vs mode though. One of my favorite Tetris experiences is playing versus in The New Tetris on N64 and my wife and I zoning out to Neil Voss' amazing soundtrack.

Watched a couple minutes of previews, and yup. This is looking like a pretty incredible 40 dollar PSVR or 4K Tetris Musical Experience.

Yeah, went to preorder it on Best Buy just now and saw a November 16th date too. Don't know why.

Even with all these bells and whistles, $40 bucks seems like a bit much for a Tetris game, but whatever, I'll buy it anyway. It looks super fun and I like to support VR as a medium.

At the first look 40 bucks might be a bit much but the game seems to have some very different and well done modes.

Yeah, the Giant Bomb video really sold me on those extra modes, but they're still just alternate versions of a fairly simple game. At $20 it would be a no brainer purchase for me. At $40 I kind of have to work to justify it to myself. Maybe the demo will change that. Everyone who has tried it seems very impressed.

Yeah, the upcoming demo should make the decision much easier.

And there is a 10% pre order bonus, not much but better than nothing and it will include a dynamic theme.
