I can only imagine a Playstation Classic JRPG edition with

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Tactics
Chrono Cross
Brave Fencer Musashi
Xenogears
Wild ARMs
Vagrant Story
Thousand Arms
Parasite Eve
Suikoden II
Legend of Dragoon (not a personal fave, but would expect it to be on there)
Saga Frontier
Breath of Fire IV
Legend of Mana
Lunar: Silver Story Complete
Valkyrie Profile
Jade Cocoon
Alundra
Star Ocean: Second Story

That would be a Classic worth F5'ing for imho.

Dammit this just makes me want BC more, no dual shock and lacking in so many games. I know it's probably in licensing hell but I fucking love TOCA Touring Cars.

True, but that doesn't negate my point that this is a bait-and-switch.
No it isn't

If you were not informed of the contents aside from those initial 5 games until you actually bought it and took it home, only to see you didn't want most of what was on there, then it would be a bait and switch.

We are still a month out from it being released. You now know what is on there before fully committing your money to it and can make your decision as to whether or not to keep a preorder (assuming you placed one).

I like this list... it reminds me of the PS1 era as we actually knew it back then. Lots of eclectic titles.. a whole bunch of weird Japanese games with then-odd titles and hard to define genres. That's what made the platform so exciting in those days.

Sometimes people make their best of PS1 list and it's clearly through modern eyes.. the jRPGs people still remember or whatever. Much as I'd love a PS1 classic with all the Squaresoft classics and Capcom survival horror games or whatever, they aren't really representative of the full strangeness of the platform lineup. This classic kinda nails it. There's stuff here I've long forgot about, but really want to replay.
Agreed. Even a bunch of stuff on here that's supposedly super good that I never even played due to the size of that library and since I was so zoned in to the numerous JRPGs and some other Japanese games, so many that I only needed to supplement that with occasional top western games. Like someone mentioned, themed machines would certainly be pretty interesting given the rather large lineup in many genres on this thing lol.

I also kind of love that Persona 1, a JRPG, gets to take the slot as one of the most unexpected on the list (aside from probably Rainbow Six, just to have FPS). I think it's a very cool choice despite being different from where the series would soon go.

Japan
Japanese list is slightly better. Would have been nice to see other titles. I'd take RE3 over, 1. Frontier 2, over the original.

Persona 2 Innocent Sin would be a much better inclusion than the original, despite its brief moments of charm.

Ape Escape required analog sticks, which this hardware does not have.

Yup, and that brings me back to my biggest problem. The biggest take away from this thread:

Q: "Why no X game"

A: "Rights probably too hard"

Q: "Why no Dual Shocks"?

A: "Too expensive"

Q: "Seriously, why not even Y game"

A: "Too expensive"

Sony, this thing is £90. It's not exactly 'buy on a whim' territory to justify multiple compromises

Is ape escape good? I only played it on psp and it was meh.

The PS1 version is excellent. One of the best games on the system. I never played the PSP version but it was grossly inferior by all accounts, largely due to the revised control scheme I assume. The PS1 game required the use of a Dual Analogue controller whereas the PSP (obviously) only had one stick.

I still can't get over Rainbow Six being on here for no other reason than to appeal to Siege players.

Like if it was on the N64 or DC mini it'd be fine. But even at release this was considered a bad port.

It's incredible.

Playing Ape Escape without dual analog sticks is like playing Guitar Hero with a controller. Sure it's technically possible, there is a guitar hero psp game, but it's missing the most important aspect of the game.

They were literally never going to please anyone with a list of 20 PSone games. The console has such a large selection of classics that it's just impossible. Either they increase the selection (and price), add downloads, or make difficult decisions.

Man, if only this got

-Crash Bandicoot
-Tomb Raider

I would have bought one for my dad. He introduced me to PlayStation thru PS1 back then.

el oh el @ Rainbow Six. Guys, I played it when it came out and it was absolutely trash at the time. I say that as someone who used to adore Tom Clancy games and had a blast with Island Thunder just a few years later on the Xbox.

Pretty average list. Games aren't awful - but other than like four of them, I feel like none of them define the PlayStation. Spyro? Crash? Ape Escape? WipEOut? Jet Moto? Tomb Raider? THPS? I feel like it's missing so much.

Do we know yet if this is 60hrtz for Europe?
We don't know. The blog post didn't mention it and neither does the Sony web page for the product.

Ordinarily that might be a worrying sign since this is something that should have been addressed (and Nintendo, to their credit, did properly address it), but I have no expectations that the current set of people maintaining the blog actually understand this issue, so I wouldn't be too worried (yet).

The list of games being identical between North America and Europe is probably a good sign. If Sony were going to include different sets of ISOs they'd probably have varied the list and tailored it a bit more to European tastes, the fact that they're the same list probably/hopefully means that they're the same ISOs and therefore all 60Hz.

The use of "preloaded" seems fishy to me. Am I reading too much into that, or does anyone think there will be expansions or store functionality?

There wouldn't be as many complaints if the list was 20 classics.
That's the point and why people prefer the JP list for example, there was enough classics to choose from.

Idk man, if a few games weren't on this list I'm not sure people would be upset and saying "Where's Rainbow Six and Jumping Flash!!"

Some of the games chosen are confusing to me. Maybe it really was a licensing issue and this is the best they could get *shrug*

Uh..well.. you could I don't know... remaster the game, release it for a great price on the current generation consoles and make everyone in the world happy. Oh wait.. They did! That's how. However, yeah GT would of been a better pick than the Battle Arena game.

If MS were to do an Xbox Classic I'm pretty sure they'd include the original Halo even with remasters existing.

I'm going to be very sad when the list of N64 classic games are revealed and Goldeneye isn't on it because of rights issues.

Better list than I expected, I didn't think they'd get that number of classic third-party licenses. I really like how they include GTA 1, I always preferred the overhead-view games. While there are of course games I'd prefer, there are WAY too many great games on PS1 to be able to make everyone happy. The games they chose are obviously real classics or important ones to the system, and all but one game based around the original non-analogue controller <glares at Ridge Racer Type 4>. They obviously left off games that PS4 owners can already get in remastered form (or will shortly), like Crash Bandicoot or Resident Evil 2, those were probably easy ones to remove from the list to make room for other games.

It's already $99.
The SNES and NES classic both are cheaper than this and have better selections. For the current price, they could of either included more games (increase the list by 10-15) since it's already $99. I don't know how increasing the list besides licensing and such getting in the way obviously would make the price increase further than $99? Would you pay $120-130 for a 30-35 list of games on this?

However.. the download thing.. yeah that would of be a major boost for people to purchase this. I do think this will get cracked or something not too late into the life cycle of it's release though which will probably serve the same process as "downloading".

Yep. There's a difference from "not a bad list but not for me" and "let's put Rainbow Six on there". The Japanese list is definitely far better executed. The EU and NA lists feel like they're trying too hard to appeal to current popular games moreso than actual nostalgia.

In fairness the PS1 library is huge.

But I don't think anyone would have missed it if they left out the PS1 version of the original Rainbow Six. Or Persona. Hell, two Arc the Lad games... Probably not on most people's top 10 PS1 games.

MGS and FFVII are good gets though.

This is playstation allstars all over again. Where the fuck are crash and spyro?

Crash is out already, duh.
Spyro is coming in November.
Yes, I know, people wanted these for some reason despite it being cheaper to just purchase the remasters. I'm on the side of the fence that didn't want slots wasted on these games with the two remasters both being out for PS4 though.

But the problem is that what's a classic for you is not necessarily a classic for me and vice versa. For me, I played the SHIT out of Theme Hospital and would have loved for it to be on here; others might think that's a wasted spot, y'know?

This is the "problem" with PSone really; it's library was eclectic, large, and VERY varied.

Sure there would though. If the JP list was the US list, for example, I guarantee that there'd be complaints of way too many JRPGs taking up slots. It looks like they have 7 included out of 20 games, though I certainly wouldn't mind as it's my favorite genre. It's definitely hard to figure out the genre spread given the PS1 library.

I admit, that's a great list. I always thought these consoles prey on nostalgia and sell overpriced rims, but that list is good. I still want buy it, but I could understand why someone would now. I would still rather have a current Gen collection personally.
