A Blast From the Portable-Gaming Past!
In a world where humans and octopi are at war, Mr Tako is a persistently helpful little octopus who rescues a woman from drowning one stormy night. A fairy sees this act of bravery and grants him the ability to survive on land, where he can turn enemies into platforms by spitting ink at them. As he travels across the surface world, Mr Tako defies his family and his people to try to resolve conflicts between humans and octopi.

Mr Tako will solve puzzles, explore mysterious dungeons and fight tenacious bosses on his mission to end the war between the undersea octopus kingdom and the terrestrial human world. Will you help this brave octopus to spread his message of tolerance and teach both species to coexist in peace and unity?

  • Designed as a tribute to the original Game Boy— looks, sounds and plays like a long-lost cartridge for that beloved handheld game system
  • 6 worlds to explore
  • 50 different hats that Mr Tako can acquire and wear to gain special abilities
  • Extensive character dialogue with many unique and memorable NPCs
  • Side quests, puzzles, mini-games and 16 different dungeons to explore
  • Multiple player-selectable palettes to change the game's color scheme

Octopuses vs. Humans

Long before the events depicted in Save me Mr Tako, octopuses ruled the world. This lasted until a curse forced the octopuses to live in the sea and caused them to die after giving birth, leading to their decline. Humans became the new dominant species, creating kingdoms and expanding their own culture over centuries, erasing the octopuses' glorious past.

One day, an octopus called Bako met a fairy who granted him the ability to breathe out of water, allowing him to visit the human world. He had dreamt of this legendary land, but found it to be a place where humans fought each other and tried to kill him. He returned to the ocean with some knowledge that allowed him to create helmets for an octopus army, thinking that his people could rise again if the humans were to decline.
As the game begins, a full-scale war is about to break out between the humans and the oppressed octopuses. You play as Tako-San, a kind and helpful octopus who tries his best to never feel hatred for anyone. Caught in the middle of the conflict between the two species, you must search for a way to save both octopuses and humans from destroying each other. That's why the game is called Save me Mr Tako.

Even though you play as an octopus, the majority of your quest takes place across the three main human kingdoms:

Belys: A small, neutral state by the sea, composed mostly of beaches and forests.

Sarona: A kingdom ruled by a warmongering barbarian who turns his very strict and religious country into a battlefield filled with graveyards.

Ydor: A community dedicated to art and life, in a rich valley surrounded by snowy mountains.

  • How long is this game?
According to reviews, it should take you around 20h to beat the story and side quests.

  • What's a "Kirbyvania"?
Think Kirby gameplay and cuteness X Mario platforming X Zelda Dungeons x Vania overall structure. The developer used the term to describe his game, but he also referred to it as "a JRPG trapped in a retro platformer, like if a Kirby game had merged with Final Fantasy VI."

  • Are Octopuses objectively the best animals?
    Yes, that is correct.

I'm preloaded and ready to go.

As I said in the e shop thread I've been more excited for this than red dead. Everything I've seen so far looks great and I hope it is good!

OK. After seeing some previews, I'm curious enough to go for this, especially with $10 to spare.

Hope it turns out good.

Just bought it on Switch, looks like a charming game and it's only $10 right now, so why not?

Edit: I also read that while you can't prepurchase the Steam version, they're planning on having the 33% discount at launch on Steam as well.

What kind of game is it? Is it a Metroidvania?
The developer calls it a "Kirbyvania", here's a blog post detailing the gameplay:
Mr Tako is a platformer RPG where you play as an octopus who can spit ink to turn enemies into platforms and he can use 50 different powers during his quest." Because of its structure, we can't call the game style "Metroidvania"…so let's call it "Kirbyvania"!

Tako moves fast and jumps high. His main power is shooting ink at his enemies to turn them into platforms that will help him advance in the world. Shooting ink consumes the ink gauge, and when it becomes empty, Tako can't shoot again until the gauge refills itself.

While you play, you will be able to navigate the world through hubs, like in the Kirby games. There is one hub per world, and the doors can lead you to levels, towns or dungeons. The game is story-driven and the levels are unlocked one after another. Sometimes, you'll have to return to a level you've previously cleared in order to unlock a new path that becomes available thanks to the powers of a new hat (like bombs, fire, etc.). The level structure is similar to old-school platformers, but I tried to introduce something new in each level. There are also different types of dungeons; some are linear and others are more like Zelda dungeons (with keys and items). Each one has a boss at the end.

Been looking forward to this since it was announced. They absolutely nailed the (Super) Game Boy aesthetic. Hoping it reviews well.

I was on the cusp of pre-ordering it this weekend, but some of the gameplay footage from the opening 30 minutes or so gave me pause.

It looks like mainly jumping around and hitting switches, and while I adore the GB aesthetic, I'm wondering if, after a while, the visuals will start to feel less nostalgic and more dull.

The pre-order discount is pretty significant, but I may wait to read a few reviews to see how people feel after going through the whole game.

Wow, I had no idea the structure was like that. Seems really cool. Looking forward to reading reviews. Been looking forward to this game for a long time, thanks for the awesome OT!
Yeah, same here. Great reviews so far, thanks for sharing Nabbit. Feeling good about my pre-purchase now :)

Is anyone making a full OT for the game or should I turn this thread into one and pretty it up a bit / add info, reviews / etc. later today?

edit:

|OT| Undersea Kirbyvania
|OT| Ink to the Past x Kirbyvania
|OT| Kraken Kirbyvania
|OT| Cute Kraken Kirbyvania
|OT| Super Game Boy Homage
|OT| through monochromatic glasses
|OT| Link, Mario and Kirby walk into a Vania

Any other quick ideas for an OT title?

So is it unlocked yet, or is it unlocking at noon? (Edit: is not unlocked yet)

I barely remembered to preorder before midnight last night to snag the discounted price.

Played through a demo a few years ago. It's a pretty neat game, happy that the dev could finally finish it.

quick straw poll:

|OT| An Ink to the Past

|OT| An Ink from the Past // |OT| Ink from the Past

|OT| Undersea Kirbyvania // [OT| Kraken Kirbyvania

|OT| Link, Mario and Kirby walk into a Vania

I'll PM a Mod once the OT is done.

Based on what I've played, the "vania" part feels kinda misleading.

Haven't played it yet, the developer used the "Kirbyvania" term in interviews but he also described the game as "a JRPG trapped in a retro platformer, like if a Kirby game had merged with Final Fantasy VI." Probably better to not use the term in the OT title, thanks for the input!

Save me Mr Tako (Switch, PC) |OT| An Ink from the Past

cool?
