While browsing the NBA2K subreddit, I read a post that puts a face to what I think is the number fear most of us have with the sweeping inclusion of micro transaction in gaming. Addiction, and putting life aside to feed it.

Sure we don't like MTX because it also hamstrings the game in order for it to attractive to consumers, yet stories like this is what I really would hate to see become "just another part" of gaming. I'm sure the early years of Casinos were the same.

This story isnt new, its all too common in mobile gaming, but it a pretty niche market ( the gaming piece that is) even though it a mass market product due to being on cell phones. However with Pay2Win encroaching more and more into console and PC AAA gaming, this will soon be a reality for our community too.

I'm not surprised that I read this on the NBA2K subreddit, as it is the game that's leading the charge with its ridiculous use of VC in the series.

Dear people,

I am writing this with a clear head now, aware of my addiction and of all the time and money it has cost me. Even my relationship.

I have been playing nba 2k since 2k17 And in the beginning it was fun and i really got deep in the 2k community following every tweet, update, trend of it all. During 2k18 it went even further. I kept spending money on the VC and i played so many hours that hindsight i could spend on my study and work. But now, three years later, i didnt finished my study that normaly takes 4 years and im in my 7th year now. I lost my job aswel, all i could think off was 2k, watching youtubers, messing around on 2klab etc. With that it destroyed my 7 year relationship, we wanted to get married but that ended.. Not only my relationship, but this stressed out my mom so bad that she couldnt handle it and she is very depressed now. Even though im a grown man, 30 years old, an addiction can happen to everybody. After not playing 2k for about almost a month and rationalizing everything, even quitting i managed to see how much money i have spend on 2k in these three years and its almost 10.000 euro, thats like 11400 dollar.

I never wanted to acknowledge that i was addicted and it has cost me so much that i wanted to share my story with you guys. I think it is a lovely community and the game can really be fun but please aware of what can happen. Please think twice when making choices and what you could buy with the money you spend on VC. I really cant live with myself but i will never quit on my life, even though i thinked about it. I have sold my playstation yesterday as a first step. Too bad i cant sell my psn account but i have to live with that. And as a second step i wanted to share this with you.

I wish you all the best ❤️ bless

Addiction is a problem with all games including those without microtransactions.
