With Microsoft looking to bring "console quality" streaming to phones and tablets with Project xCloud, how will the company achieve that when touch controls are still pretty bad? It seems the company is looking to bring physical controllers to mobile devices to offset this problem, according to these Microsoft Research papers.

The work was carried out quite a while ago, back in 2014, but it seems Microsoft Research has resurfaced their efforts recently, noting the recent success of the Nintendo Switch.

Seems they are getting ready for Project xCloud.

I've been waiting for something like this. Even though the controllers for smartphones and tablets never convinced me that they were of console controller quality.

Hell, I'd love these just to play on my main Xbox on the big screen. A joycon in each hand, arms flubbed at my sides is peak comfort.

Not sold on making it super modular. I worry the ergonomics get might lost in the fray there.

Do think these still need some work.. especially since phones have almost no bezels these days.

Hopefully it's not too expensive. I'd like to use this for steaming Steam games to a phone, because most options similar to this are awful.

These things will not take off because they aren't standardised. I have been holding out for mobile gaming to move into something akin to more traditional handheld gaming for a while, but it's just not what most people want.

Untill Sony, Valve, Microsoft and Google go all in on streaming, that is. Then you'll see 3 - 4 type of controllers become mainstream. Add these add-on controllers to the streaming box you sell, bundle them with games, etc.

I wish they'd let me stream from my X in bed on my phone or iPad.

Apart from the ergonomics, that setup just does not look it will hold a phone / tablet securely.
The Switch has physical rails to connect the controllers to that bear the weight.
Third party similar solutions either dock the device inside them
maxresdefault.jpg

or have some kind of support structure to hold the device in place

they're banned so they're not going to respond to your questions anytime soon guys.
I assume they're talking about this kind of thing
Smart-Phone-Clip-Clamp-Mount-Holder-Stand-Bracket-for-Sony-PlayStation-4-PS4-Wireless-Controller.jpg_640x640.jpg

which is just a plastic bracket that can connect your phone and a dualshock, but thats not "a sony solution" and doesnt work well with tablets

It looks good, but couldn't they just release a blue-tooth enabled Xbox One controller that could connect to your phone/tablet?

We already have Bluetooth enabled XB1 controllers which people use on their phones.

But carrying around a controller with you might be more work than most are willing to do, these things look alot smaller than a full controller so people maybe be more comfortable to carry them around.

I assumed they'd go for a padded clamp solution. They work on all sizes, are secure, and don't require a bezel.

They already have. I think these ideas are more about providing different options.

Oh... I had no idea they had did that already.

MS needs their own mobile presence to push this. Relying on Google and Apple to playball isnt going to work.

Apple and google need to be able to make big money off of this before they will put in the effort, i.e. design hardware to stream controller required games from anywhere (cloud/pc/console). Maybe Google's project stream will offer this money and we'll get pixel gaming phines?

Huh? Clamp solutions provide a firm mount for the phone but the phone itself bears none of the load.

The point of failure is directly at the point where a user is jiggling around and mashing. Natural hand movements are going to be pushing the device 'away' from where its clamped, and the point of contact doesn't look large enough to spread that distribution of force around (unlike the third party gamepad where you 'dock' the device inside the controller, but only works with specific sized phones)

99% of mobile is apple and google. So how do you get them to make phones/tablets work with your gaming hardware?

Its the other way round, the controller needs to work with existing phones / tablets. Right now the bluetooth edition X1 controllers can pair to an android device easily as its a standard bluetooth HID.

I think you're thinking of something different to me. As I said before, clamping devices don't let the phone take any load, they just hold them in place. The controller would still be a rigid thing (although probably moveable by width) without the phone in.

How have I not heard of this before? Pretty lag free?
FYI from the thread about it
Disclaimer: I am an Xbox employee.

Whilst very cool, please note that since they have reverse-engineered the Win10 streaming protocol, they presumably require you account username/password for authentication. However, this literally means you will be providing your full account details to the app completely unencrypted. So definitely beware!

I'm talking about the use case presented in Fig 7 of OP.
If you put some bulldog clips on a book, hold the book by the clips and do make believe button mashy hadoken type movements with your hands, you'll see how you are exerting pressure on the point of failure.

When I talk about a clamping solution I'm talking about the more conventional use of the mechanism - like you see on phone and tablet mounts. My Parrot Sky Controller uses one, for example.

In which case I agree - I'm saying the way they're presenting the controller in the OP looks like a bad solution that will not securely hold a tablet during gameplay, as it looks like they took the idea of the switch joycons but don't have the engineering support of embedded hooks on the tablet part itself that the joycons use, and are just putting clamps on the controller parts like bulldog clips
