I shouldn't be reading this thread and its rumours right before I go to sleep. I just woke up from a dream where Shadow was revealed as number 69 and his reveal trailer was just him riding his motorcycle in a Green Hill zone, with rocket launcher in hand, in a "cool" motionless Terminator 2 pose as Crush 40 music played for like 3 minutes.

eh as long as spirits mode doesnt disappoint i think most people will be just fine with the direct

unless its kencineroar, but then itd be entirely sakurai's fault
I'm kind of surprised people care about the single player mode in a Smash game so much. I'd assume most people are looking forward to new characters and if they don't get cool ones, people will be disappointed.

Personally I was happy with the game after E3, but others seem to have some really high expectations.

That's the problem. How would that be his fault? It's a 70 character game already. If it has great modes + the absurd huge roster, there's nothing to complain.

Other games struggle to hit the 20~30 char bar.

they're just two terrible characters to end the reveal cycle
a pokémon that isnt even the most popular of its game and the most boring clone possible

smash expectations are higher than for other fighting games

most people were fine with ESS, I think
people really just want something substantial to play in singleplayer id say

I'm probably alone in saying that I'd rather Smash have no singleplayer beyond classic, all star, break the targets and events. Even then, I'd still trade all of those for one extra character, not that that's a comparable workload at all.

It's just so inconsequential to me, I'd rather they just focused on getting as many characters, stages and items into the game as possible. That's the content for me, not some mode that will take up 1% or less of my playtime.

Smash never ends wth a "bang" (bang for the Smash diehards, as most people don't care about this stuff). Incineroar is a popular character from a very popular game and Ken has more history, relevance and is more recognizable than literally any other 3rd party echo people bring up -- he's an iconic character from a 10Bn$ game after all.

I do think you can dislike a character, I personally don't like many proposed, but people thinking "only 2" to end a 70-character roster is bad have expectations way way too high.

And we've played with the vast majority of those 70 characters. We want more newcomers
We have fewer newcomers because they brought everyone back. Who is "we"? Until this rumor everyone was fine with only a few more. That's the problem with stuff like this, people will blame Sakurai for having unrealistic expectations.

I don't think that the final name for the SP mode is "Spirits" , it sounds really silly. I'm sure that the blurred picture was a placeholder.

I can not think of a fathomable scenario where this game disappoints me. The only thing that may put a damper is if online tanks pretty bad which is possible. But even then I will be playing this game for thousands of hours.

It's not that it's only 2, it's that they're those two. I just don't think it's a good idea to end on a pokémon and an echo when your reveal cycle was filled with megaton like Inkling, Ridley, Simon and K.Rool. I wouldn't have an issue with Incineroar and Ken at all, they both fit the Smash card but they're just not hype themselves.

Just add one good spicy newcomer in the mix and it'd be good enough.

In the end idc what characters they end on. This will already be the greatest Smash game of all time for me. Just an insane package.

I mean if were blindly trusting insiders no questions asked we already know there's going to be more than Ken and Incineroar lol

Exactly my thoughts, if online is bad again, this will be the most disappointing scenario for me.

The roster is great so far, but I'll be disappointed if we don't gent Elma, Rex, Spingman or Isaac (including DLC, they don't need to be base roster) and we get instead Geno or other old fan-favorites.

Until this rumor everyone was fine with only a few more.

I don't know about that, I was still expecting 5-6 more characters before this leak, 1 or 2 at the end of a general direct at the start of November and then a couple more in a smash direct before release that goes into detail about the hidden modes.

The only character we have reason to believe isn't actually in is Banjo, which Steve hinted at last night is the reason he knows the roster is fake. Outside of that we have:

Ken was leaked
Shadow is a hard lock, and Jonneh suggested he's a semi-clone on top of it
Isaac has a secret item in the game

and then if we apparently need a stupid Pokemon every game, we still need a retro rep as well. We could still end up getting a lot of the same characters. According to Mystic there will be at least one double reveal trailer, so expect a lot of reveals in the last direct.

Printing/review copies go out in Mid-November. There was no way of more than one Direct left.

Sakurai himself also did say there were only a few more left and that the reveals were frontloaded. People were discussing with this mindset mostly.

because other games don't tend to re use as much as smash does
Marvel vs Capcom Infinite literally got most assets from 3 and even then it was lacking. Most fans would be overjoyed if the roster was just MvC3 + more.

Other games do reuse a lot of their assets too. Just recently we have Blazblue, Guilty Gear, Dead or Alive, SNK Heroines, etc.

Are we really into the point where people are complaining about the number of newcomers in a 70 characters roster?

Did Sakurai or anyone ever explain what happened to the red turtle shell item? It was one of my favorite items to use.

I hope Spirits mode is like Adventure mode in Melee. There was a high replay value since it's like 15 or 20 minutes long.
Just add more routes. Do it kinda like Outrun. Route A or B, from route A you can go to route C or D, from B to D or E, etc.
And each route is an IP's world. Mushroom Kingdom, Hyrule Castle, Dracula's castle, Dream Land, Big Blue or Mute City...

Barring stuff like MvC reusing animations, what was reused in SFV from SFIV? What was reused in Injustice 2 from Injustice 1?

The only other recent higher budget fighting game that springs to mind is MKX reusing fighters from MK9 in the story mode, but I don't play as many fighting games these days as I used to.

Usually most of thee time it feels like they try to reinvent themselves to much, when they should just do what this game does and use the previous one as a base to improve on like they should have done with Melee *cough* *cough*

I've always wanted Sakurai to work on a Sega version of Smash Bros. If he wanted to be done with the series and perhaps create something that is a unique take on the crossover fighter concept

Anyone already decided their initial team after unlocking every character? Based on everyone we know, plus the banner leak.

- Mr. Game & Watch: I'm not actually that good at him but he's my Smash 4 main and I like playing him a lot.
- Mario: My go-to character if I want to be truly competitive. Easy to use yet solid.
- Isabelle: I really like Villager but I always found his wacky hitboxes and unorthodox moves to be hard to play with, Isabelle seems like she solves those problems.
- Banjo & Kazooie: I have been waiting to see these two again for a goddamn decade. They could be lowest of low tier and I would still play the crap out of them.
- Mach Rider: I don't know what the hell she'll do but it'll probably be awesome.

To core fans that maybe true, 70 something fighters with most washed returns. But casual fans it's just the same game with couple of niche additions. They need something in caliber of Snake or Megaman+Pacman and I don't think just Simon is enough to validate 60 dollar purchase for casual fans. And this is a Smash game without the firsts (Brawl was the first online and 4 was the first portable) attracting more people might be tougher than previous entries.

Plus expectations for Smash have always been high, no hints from insiders can change that. Even Simon not being the final reveal has raised the bar so high, people are expecting to have their minds blown with future reveals. That's why incineroar feels so unrealistic to many people.

oh if it's sales you worry about, don't because preorders are showing that it's likely going to debut higher than any previous smash games

Incineroar is likely going to do more to sway the casual fan than Geno, Mach Rider, Chorus Kids and fucking Isaac.

some people were already kinda disappointed when they found out there weren't gonna be that many newcomers and it isn't hard to see why, some people like having new characters to mess around with. Sure it's nice to have everyone back but there is much interesting things to do with young link coming back as there is compared to a newcomer

I wish they updated Fox to his Zero design. I hate his ugly Command design.

he is using his Zero design

I wish an OG Super Monkey Ball game could return to consoles. Hell, I'd settle with a port of 2. It was my favorite of the series.
Me too...Monkey Ball 1 and 2 were fantastic but every entry from there on somehow got worse. Banana Blitz had like 50 minigames and none of them were good and the Vita's Banana Splitz had terrible controls. They can't even seem to get Monkey Target right anymore.
