My wife and I are spending our 10 year wedding anniversary in New Buffalo, Michigan for the week. We have a great lake house all to ourselves right on the beach that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford courtesy of a family friend. I had a whole bunch of fun things planned and cool restaurants we were going to go to.

Except my poor newly pregnant wife is miserable with the stomach flu, morning sickness, or a combination of both. She's been laid up on the couch for the past 3 days barely able to do anything. I feel so bad for her.

Have you ever missed out on something fun or important because you were sick?

I was so incredibly excited for uncharted 2 like you can't imagine. And 2 days before release I got the flu, like the crippling losing weight fever flu and I couldn't play video games or even look at a screen for like 2 weeks. Bloody awful.

Back in 2011 I got food poisoning while on vacation in Vegas and missed an entire day.
Luckily I recovered enough by the end for the four hour flight home to go without 'incident'

Reading the OP, I liked to imagine that he is still going out waterskiing, hot-tubbing, and hiking while his wife remains inside.

My most recent holiday, halfway through the two weeks got severe food poisoning, may have been salmonella

In bed, couldnt stand straight. Vomiting daily , shitting daily. Was terrible, couldnt eat or sleep.

There have been illnesses that have prevented me from going on nights out, which are always a shame

Sophomore year of highschool, my art class took a train to Chicago to see the museums and whatnot. I woke up feeling perfectly fine, but as soon as we got on the train I got sick. I spent the whole day puking and shitting my guts up all around Chicago.

As soon as we got back on the train to go home, I was better. It must have been food poisoning from something 'cause it was like 10 hours of misery, just long enough to ruin the day. It was probably the most miserable day of my life.

I got food poisoning on New Year's Eve one year when we were all planning to go out and celebrate. I spent most of the evening throwing up in a bucket in a spare room... which to be honest, mostly everyone else was doing when they got back, just they spent a lot more money for their privilege.

Stomach virus had me lying on the bathroom floor puking my brains out while my wife went into labor. Her dad had to drive her to the hospital. :/

Back in Primary School in Year 5 our cleaner Mr Smith (he cleans the school and outside, he was nice) was leaving and he had been there for a long time so our teacher had our class put on a singing performance of a couple of songs. Teacher chose me to do the solo vocals for Michael Jackson's Earth Song while the rest of the class would do the backing voices as a choir.

We practised for like a week, and on the day I fell terribly ill and was throwing up everywhere at home. I spent most of the day playing video games, then, about an hour before I went to bed, I realised, let out a massive scream, and said 'shit' for the first time.

A similar thing happened when a teacher passed away at my high school and I missed both the school announcing his passing and their funeral for him. I didn't realise he passed away for a good couple months and thought that he had just passed on. Oops.

Edit: Also on Holiday in 2013 my family got conned into buying really shit suncream at the hotel (by the company who we bought the holiday with too) and the cream just let my body get burnt to a crisp. Funny thing is I didn't even feel myself being burnt. I had to spend 2 days in the hotel room constantly in pain while I only had a box set of the Simpsons Season 8 to watch since the TV was broke.

I was sick one day when we went to Disney World and had to stay in the hotel while my wife and kids went to the park. We were there 10 days though, so it was no biggie.

She actually insisted I go try this sushi restaurant after taking care of her the past few days. No waterskiing as it's current 45 degrees. No hot tubs. We actually did manage to get some hiking in on the first day before she started feeling sick.

Vegas trip, gall stone stuck in my bile duct. A 4mm tube with a 9mm blockage. No food or drink would digest. I had been drinking for like 1.5 days straight before I knew. Bed ridden for 5 days in vegas, then hospitalised back in Aus for 2 weeks and surgery.

Hope your wife feels better to salvage some of your trip.

I was pregnant on my 21st birthday :(
I celebrated my 21st birthday in Bumfuck, Indiana at an Applebees. I know your pain.

Stomach virus had me lying on the bathroom floor puking my brains out while my wife went into labor. Her dad had to drive her to the hospital. :/
Ouch.

Nosebleed right before a job interview.
As someone who grew up with and continues to experience frequent nosebleeds, I feel for you. I've gotten them plenty of times in not great situations (nothing like coming up for air while going down only to realize there's blood everywhere).

As a kid I remember missing out on a Valentine's Day party due to a stomach bug. My neighbor friend was kind enough to bring me some candy hearts which I stared at as I lay in bed, miserable.

Sinus infection + advil cold & sinus the morning after I had margaritas at an impromptu bachelorette party - which also happened to take place the night before our wedding shower. Made several dozen guests at the shower wait because I couldn't stop vomiting.

A horrendous cold the weekend of our first anniversary. We'd taken time off work to travel. Only time I've ever sneezed and had blood just pour out of my nose, just as we were pulling into the hotel parking lot.

Missed a concert I was really looking forward to because I was amazingly ill for the first four months of my twin pregnancy.

I got the flu on the only cruise ship I've ever been on. My mom had room service the night before I started feeling sick. The smell of bacon takes me back :'(

I got diagnosed with cancer days before my final exams. Had to take the fail for the year because I couldn't attend them, despite having done everything else in the course.

Next year I relapsed on the first day back

And this year I relapsed about two weeks after the date you can pull out without penalty.

My cancer really doesn't want me to go back to school XD

Way back when I was in elementary school, I got appendicitis. I was in out of the hospital in just over 24 hours but was bedridden for about a week and couldn't eat most types of food, swim, or do anything strenuous for a little over a month. The timing was unfortunate, it happened in the final week of school, and I ended up missing out an a lot of things I had been looking forward to, the biggest ones being:

• A massive end of the year school fair, which happened to be the final on my school ever had.

• My teams final championship game in little league, which they won, I had been the star third baseman. They had a pool party that I couldn't partake in and they had tons of pizza delivered that I couldn't eat.

• A camping trip to Yosemite Valley that my family planned months in advance that I couldn't go on because of my stitches. I insisted they go without me instead of not at all and stayed with my grandparents until they got back.

• I missed a fair bit of the summer.

The only thing I did get for it was three lame little scars.

I went to PAX prime one year and got food poisoning the first night there. Ruined the whole trip for me, and being that far away from home (Ky), made me feel so lonely and miserable, lol.

I had mono during the last month or so of my senior year of college.

Couldn't drink, couldn't engage in any strenuous physical activity...

Girlfriend and I were supposed to go to Columbus for a brewery's anniversary party. I was feeling pretty sick the day before and was hoping it'd clear up by morning.

Ended up sleeping on the couch all day while she played WoW and watched Netflix. Pretty bummed about it.

Well, I think you've "won" this thread. That is fucking rough, to say the least.

When I was 5 I was super sick on Halloween, and I wasn't allowed to go trick or treating or show off my costume. I asked my mom to save me the good candy from what they were giving out, but all that was left were mounds and almond joys.

Because of the recent onset of lighteadedness/headaches I've been getting lately I haven't been able to stick around at a lot of events without feeling like I'm going to pass out (I never do but it always feels like it). I've missed so much over the past few months and it's depressing

1. Grandpa's funeral
2. Got sick on my honeymoon. It was in Japan. I have about a 50/50 chance of getting sick on a flight/on a trip. We still did stuff, but the schedule was toned down a lot. :(

I missed out on a spelling bee and free ice cream back in elementary school due to the flu.

Makes me tear up just thinking about it. I would've redeemed myself from the previous year when I misspelled "raccoon". :<

Sick? Sort of, more like hungover.

I was supposed to play futsal with some members of the Japanese imperial family on New Years a few years ago. I went to a party with friends the night before and was too dead the next day to get out of bed.

Sick as hell on a cruise. Sat in the room watching movies on a shit tv.

I remember my dad being crazy sick when we were in Rome, hiking around the Vatican and shit in 38 degree weather with a high fever. Just sweating buckets. He told me years later (I was a teen at the time) he honestly thought he had killed himself.

I missed most of my last semester of college when all my friends were partying, with swine flu followed up directly by cytomegalovirus. I was quarantined from campus by the school health center, so not having to go to class was cool. But the virus attacked my spleen and liver so I couldn't party. So that sucked. Along with the, ya know, feeling like shit for months.

Honeymoon. Was great until I ate a seafood platter. It was my birthday. I ate some octopus. Or the head of the octopus.

Got the shits. We didn't have sex for the rest of the trip.

Visiting India for two weeks on a business trip and got a stomach virus the first weekend I was here, then a bad cold immediately when I recovered. I'm not letting it ruin my trip though!

Plus, if you have to be confined to a place, and least it's this place:

Planned a 4 day weekend around a friends wedding and got awful diarrhea as soon as we arrived at the hotel. 3 days of continuous, fiery shitting in a hotel bathroom that for some god forsaken reason had a floor length mirror opposite the toilet.

Was fully prepared and thoroughly excited for a talk I was going to give at a high profile conference. I was 29 weeks pregnant, but feeling fantastic although a bit nervous.

Got a call the day before saying I'd been diagnosed with lymphoma. It was a lot to sort through, but I was especially disappointed I couldn't attend this flagship event I'd prepared for months in advance.

Same thing happened to me the Thursday I arrived for Magfest 2016. I spent most of the con in the hotel room sick to my stomach. I summoned the strength on Friday to walk to the con, as Bear McCreary was a guest and I really wanted his autograph. He took a photo with me... and it came out really bad. I looked white as a ghost with a half dead expression on my face, and Bear just looked plain uncomfortable.

I came down with H1N1 when Fallout 3, a game I was highly anticipating, came out. I was so sick I couldn't play it - instead, I just watched my brother play while I laid in my bed puking my insides out. It was so miserable.

Even after I got better, I never played Fallout 3 because it reminds me of how sick I was.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife, and hope she'll get better soon. That sounds miserable, and truly is awful timing.

I can't think of an example from my own life, but one may come to me.

Got food poisoning while in Cuba. Ended up in a hospital due to dehydration. Spent the second half of my all inclusive vacation eating just bread and water...not fun
