Echoes straight up don't get new numbers so I'm unsure if they are actually counted from Sakurai's perspective.

Am I missing something? Where are you getting nine characters?

Basically what I've been thinking since the original "don't expect too many new characters" statement.
He said that before K Rool and Isabelle's announcements. Them + the seven in the leak are 9

You counted Isabelle

Is she number 68 right? How can you not count her?

Sakurai said not to expect too many characters before immediately showing a video where he literally laughed at the audience for faking them out.

Hey look, it's Heath here right now. Was it you that mentioned an anecdote about Vergeben copying things other people posted, or did I misremember?

So looking into statements about what Sakurai said about newcomer count before releases to prior games is Smash 4 when he said they weren't focusing on newcomers. However this was like in 2012 when they were still planning the game so it seems they were still deciding a direction for it. Compared to now when he said it 6 months before release on a broadcasted presentation.

So yeah while it's not lying it does add to how ridiculous it would be if this leak is actually real and they have 7 characters left. That is super screwy and be the closest this man has ever come to lying that wasn't a small joke

He said the thing after the echoes, and just said new fighters. Echoes still count as fighters.

Yes! Exactly! People will find this out when they get the game and play it.

The whole echo thing was likely made as a way to get in more characters whilst not demoting Lucina and Dark Pit. They were fighters in Smash 4, and still are now.

And I'm pretty sure if we include Banjo, Isaac, Geno, Chorus Kids and Mach Rider (plus Shadow and Ken if Echos count) it will still be a lower number than Brawl and Smash 4.

Melee - 14 newcomers
(Counting Dr Mario, Ganondorf, Pichu, Roy, Young Link and Falco - if he was considered a clone)
Brawl - 18 newcomers
(Counting Toon Link, Lucas and Wolf if they were considered clones at all)
Smash 4 - 21 newcomers
(including Bayonetta, Cloud, Ryu and Corrin. Plus Echos with Dark Pit and Lucina)
Ultimate - 16 newcomers
(Counting the banner leak additions. Plus Echos with Daisy, Richter Chrom, Dark Samus, Shadow and Ken)
To quote my post from earlier.

Sure, Melee and Ultimate are likely to have a similar number of newcomers.

But these numbers numbers are down to a game's lifespan. And schedules.

For example, compare Melee's 1 year (roughly) development lifespan to Ultimate's 3 years.

While I'm at it, both had very different goals and teams. The Ultimate team is largely comprised of the Smash 4 team, so experience was already on their side.

Melee was a drastic difference to Smash 64 with the premise of being available close to the launch of the GameCube.

The other Smash games didn't have to worry about balancing 70 characters in relation to each other like Ultimate does. Adding a new character multiplies the amount of work. It's not simple addition. You also have to take into account that all veterans are back and the engine has went through quite the modification.

That first reason is a little weird because it looks nothing like smashified Banjo.
The real reason is because they think Incineroar is on the roster because they saw the same outdated roster every other insider did, so they're scrambling to find ways to call it fake that don't reveal their source.

they can't find any good reasons so they aren't talking about it anymore

But Melee still had alot of stuff on it's plate. Melee is a bigger jump up from looking at everything than Ultimate is appearing to be. Especially after working on an HD platform
