It's checkerboard 4K, isn't it? It's just the worst implementation we've seen of it so far.

This late in the cycle, I'm not sure if they're shooting themselves in the foot with this old tactic. What are they gonna advertise the PS5 with? "Play it TRUE 4k now"? It's like admitting they bullshitted their customers before.

Exactly, PS5 ads are going to be: "PLAY IN TRUE NATIVE 4K".

AND? Microsft advertises EVERYTHING as "Games play best on Xbox One."They don't single out Xbox One X. Nor mention that the PC outshines them both. I can expect you to make that thread about their statements next, right?
A company doing some bullshit doesn't excuse another one to do the same. This isn't about MS being the good guys because they're certainly not. This's about Sony trying to take advantage of people's ignorance.

Well, they ain't wrong that it is 4K. A poorly reconstructed one, but 4K nonetheless.

Taken from the DF thread. Seems Sony is pulling the same tactic that Greenberg did, but not in a tweet and more so in an actual marketing campaign aimed at the general audience.

It's certainly the bluriest "4K" game I've played on my Pro.

Greenberg tweet back in the day in case you forgot/missed it:

>posting sony's shenanigans
>posting greenberg's shenanigans

"Both sides are very fine people"

Oh we should rage and keep them to the DCI resolution of 4096x2160 while we're at it. That'd bring the message home.

Literally unplayable.

4k is a (rough) measure of horizontal pixels, not vertical.

The game renders 1920 horizontal pixels, the same as a 2k image.

The render resolution on PS4 Pro is 1920x2160, which is half the resolution of what a 4k image is.

Games/resolutions always talk about 1080p or 2160p. No one is going to talk about 1920 in their marketing. It is misleading but it's marketing trying to hide details.

Pretty scummy.

What is the problem exactly? Nowhere does it say native.
It doesn't relate to Red Dead Redemption II anyway.

The campaign is about the console, not the game. Just so happens that Red Dead Redemption II is the new big title tagging along on the box.

Unsurprising really.

Nothing new. Nothing to see here.

EDIT: OP got the wrong end of the stick completely. It's an advertising campaign for a console.

I don't think it's comparable to the Greensberg quote because one method is upscaling while the other is reconstruction. Personally, I don't see the big deal with the ad. The people that care will know better.

Yup, not the first time they've done this, so I don't see the issue.

It's still misleading, 1920x2160 ain't 3840x2160

It may not be rendering every pixel every frame but it's still resolving and displaying 3840x2160 resolution.

When the Pro version looks on par (or worse?) than the base PS4 version just so Sony can advertise the game plays in 4K, there's an issue.

I would've been happier with 1260p.

I'm just going by the multiple videos including DF, and posters here though, so if I'm completely wrong and it looks great in motion, I will edit this.
The pro version looks better then the PS4 version. Even DF says it's better. It's only worse when compared to the x. Some of the hyperbole around rdr2 is a little crazy.

Good old advertising lies. That's a pretty blatant one.

"Play in blurry upscaled glory on PS4 Pro." Would be a bit more honest.

This has been the case for me with a few games MH included. It may be that my TV isn't up to snuff or that I just like SDR. I've just shut HDR off for everything except movies now.

Just sucks because its only certain games for some reason that have this issue.....Horizon: ZD was gorgeous on my set in HDR, so that makes it really frustrating.

I'm a dummy and have no idea what the difference is lol.

What is the difference?

Depending on the implementation blurrier image or image artifacts due to rendering essentially at half the resolution. RDR2 is blurrier than Xbox One X native 4K both due to lower res and seems their temporal antialiasing solution doesn't work as well for lower res. I hope they fine tune it a bit to give a sharper image on the PS4 Pro because in games like Horizon and God of War the checkerboard rendering is working really well with only minor artifacts in motion.

Thinking about the fine-print and how it's worded some more:

Is the GAME actually putting out 2160p ?
Isn't the game outputting some 2160 none-p with missing pixels and some commands for the PS4 Pro native checkerboard upscaling tech how to upscale(interpolate and sharpen the output? Meaning, the console puts out 2160p, not the game. ...or?

Is OP blind? I mean the small print at the bottom isn't even that small, not to mention they've done this before with their own first party game adverts.

Lol it's Greenberg all over again.

If I'm being honest, the general populace doesn't care about the differences, hell, they don't even know what reprojection is.

But that doesn't mean that this isn't misleading. You'd have to be really drinking the koolaid to not think so.

Games/resolutions always talk about 1080p or 2160p. No one is going to talk about 1920 in their marketing.
4K is talking about about the horizontal resolution though. 1920 = 2K.

Of course we can argue whether reconstruction from 2K to 4K really justifies the "4K" label - but let's be honest, plenty of UHD Blu-Rays claim to be 4K when they're only mastered in 2K.

2160p is indeed correct though in this case - as the 2160 only refers to the vertical resolution - the horizontal resolution can be anything you like and it'll still be 2160p whilst there are 2160 vertical lines.

Using a 4k tv, shouldn't every game output a 4k image?

I suppose that's very misleading. I think they should stop doing this.

I haven't' watched the DF video yet, but are you sure that's the case. Often times the PS4 is checkerboarding to a resolution BELOW 4K, so actually rendering below the lower, target resolution, then doing upscaling the rest of the way.

Damn rdr2 bringing back the war of 2013. Except the tables turned and people's opinions all of a sudden changed.

Isn't that basically marketing 101? The people who are willfully ignorant don't care if it's native 4K or 4K CBR.

However outraged you were at Aaron Greenberg's tweet in 2013, be as outraged as that.

But the two examples aren't really comparable. Greenberg's tweet was far more disingenuous.
