Glad the game turned out great! It's not really my sort of genre, but I know people have been looking forward to this for years, so it makes me happy to see it delivered! Hope everyone has fun this weekend :-)

For me it was Bioshoch Infinte. Sometimes it seems reviewers are losing it because of the hype. So I always take a step back and I wait to play a game.

Bioshock Infinite was so disappointing, could not believe the high scores. Then when it was the end of the year and thr game wasn't praised as much in Game of the Year picks.

For me the two 97 MC games this gen, BotW and Odyssey, were both disappointing (and I say that as a huge Mario and Zelda fan). I'm hoping this will not be the third. In the end scores mean nothing. My open world burnout is way too strong to play this game now, but I hope I enjoy it when I get to it eventually.

Bioshock Infinite I agree on. I was so hyped for that game, and then it turned out to be quite different from how they were originally advertising it.

So 99% of reviewers love the game and 1% think it's merely good? Tough crowd
Absolutely disgusting, we need to tar and feather these 1%. Who do they think they are?
The One Percent can't keep getting away with this!

LOL

It's funny because reviews only matter if there's non-subjective dissonance in the aggregate. A game can definitely be universally praised, but there's absolutely going to be the handful of reviewers who don't enjoy the particular type of game.

Also, that 1% is actually 3% ;)

The focus on realism sounds annoying (hunger). The fact that the game apparently still has that clunky Rockstar gameplay is also unfortunate. I don't think I'll ever enjoy their games until they actually play well.

GTAV PC at 60+ FPS gsync was a total gamechanger for the clunky feeling you're talking about. I realize not everyone has that setup but it's definitely a big difference for people who can't stand how it feels on consoles. Figure the same will happen here when it hits PC.

Yeah, I'm dumbfounded every time this comes up. This and the "gets a pass" meme is so bizarre to me.

There's also this weird idea that Metacritic scores are decided the same way every single time. Like it's a specific panel of people doling out judgment in the same way for every single game.

Of course that's not even remotely the case. It's a different group of people every time with different methods, different tastes, different values, etc. One game scoring slightly lower or higher than another doesn't really mean anything.
Agree with your views about GTA 5 and personal tastes here. While people are arguing about certain developers getting free passes, they fail to remember that this is Rockstar's first new game in 5 years. Even Naughty Dog has a 3 year tunaround now, as does Bethesda with FO4 and FO76 in less than 4 years.

My point is, the workmanship of Rockstar's games themselves automatically puts them into 90+ category and sometimes the reviewers gush incessantly because of it. Still doesn't take away that they build so many new mechanics for every game, fine-tune their engine for every iteration, put so many man-hours into fine details, and I can go on and on.
On a personal note, I enjoyed GTA V as much as Witcher 3 in terms of pure enjoyment. The story wasn't for me but Rockstar created a quality, living world and this will be no different.

GTA5 defaulted to lock on shooting controls. I'm assuming RDR2 is the same?

I recall trying to play GTA5 with the free aiming and it felt terrible.

Too many man-hours, unfortunately.

Disappointed about the clunky gameplay people are talking about, but it should be a great beautiful open world to experience.

If I disliked the first game would I enjoy this one?

I can't see how you could. I'm avoiding it for that reason. The hype (and pretty visuals) are getting to me slightly. But I know for a fact I'll just be left trotting along on my horse, fighting heavy controls in the middle of fucking nowhere with the worst buyer's remorse I've felt since perfect dark zero.

I'll get it if/when it gets cheap. Unlike GTAV, RDR dropped in price after a year or so since the theme obviously doesn't have the draw of GTA. So I'm holding out hope that this is similar, maybe do the same?

You sound like 'that guy' that wants to down anything that has hYpe tied to it lol
Yeah, how are they overhyped anyways? The only people who're gonna hype them up are fans or people who are looking forward to them and, for them, the game looks fantastic. I personally don't care for RDR 2 but I don't understand the need to drag down stuff you don't like

Reading about the missions in the Eurogamer review, sounds like R* has done little to improve their formula. Worse yet, sounds like it has the same problem as GTA V and the first RDR where the missions are overly scripted with little room for the sandbox player agency that made the missions in Vice City and San Andreas so fun.

Which is a shame given how much effort they're putting into the world and systems. I could imagine tons of great mission set ups that take advantage of the world itself, especially given the genre, so I hope there are at least some that give a sense of freedom and scale of available options.

At the very least, if they're going to have linear missions, I hope they're at least very good linear missions. Though the lack of combat improvements have me doubtful that they'll be terribly satisfying as action rollercoasters.

Going through reviews now and it seems like most are just impressed at the sheer detail and immersion in the game. Hell the EZA review was 90% about that. It's still a game at the end of the day and I hope it's as fun as it is immersive.
It's not gonna be fun, it's gonna be a slow immersive burn. Read the Kotaku review to get a feel for the game because this might not be for you.

Jeff Gertsmann doesn't seem to like it based on their live stream, not surprising though, I don't think he's ever liked a game that prioritized animations over response.

Great reviews. I wonder what will be the consensus GOTY this year. Seems like Red Dead has a good shot, but from these reviews it also sounds like God of War might be the more fun game on a moment to moment basis.

Maybe a repeat of The Last of Us Vs GTA V?
Where the best reviewed game eventually loses the GOTY battle with the exclusive Sony title. It was not even that close.

We'll see. I think this will be a tighter race than what happened then.

Oh no. I most certainly participate in hype. Last game I was hyped for was Spider-Man and that delivered big. Maybe RDR2 will be good enough for me to get over how boring and overhyped the game looks. Maybe not. From first glance and impressions however, the game looks more of the same as RDR1 and the reviews I'm reading only support that. I don't need a slow immersive burn. If I wanted that, I would watch Clint Eastwood or The Revenant, not play it.

I've been trying to watch people play, but after a while it just seems so slow. I don't see this game taking off like GTA5 or more specifically GTAO. The busy work just seem too slow and not at all entertaining. And again Rockstar launched their game without the online portion and still nothing much from reviewers, other than saying it's coming later, just like GTAV reviews.
