I've decided that I will, at the very least, start watching the episode on TV tomorrow, but if even one commercial shows up, I am bailing and waiting for it to hit Amazon Monday morning.

Hopefully bloody never. It is honestly one of those pieces of lore that is always best off talked about bombastically rather than seen. It's never not disappointing.

I feel like the only way Gallifrey could ever be done justice is if they set an entire two-parter there and put a SHITLOAD of budget (way more than the BBC actually allocates per episode, mind you) into the CGI and effects.

It's never, ever going to happen, but that would be the only way to make it work. Who's clunky-but-usually-semifunctional CGI just can't evoke the kind of majesty Gallifrey is given in dialogue.

Even then, the nature of the Time Lords is that they're stupid ass boring senators droning on while wearing stupid hats. The interesting ones are all the ones who go mad, and all the ones who go mad leave the planet. It's not even about the presentation (though boy, compare the description of Gallifrey in Gridlock - which itself quotes Susan - to where we eventually end up in Hell Bent - what a bummer), it's just about by their very nature Time Lords aren't interesting, as they lack all the facets of the Doctor that make the Doctor (or the Master, or even the Rani) stand out.

Perhaps I'm alone in this, but I have found the post-2005 depictions of Gallifrey fascinating. From the apocalyptic madness of The End of Time to the more festering militarism of Hell Bent, it's never been disappointing.

Incidentally, fellow fans of Peter Capaldi's portrayal of Doctor Who as a fierce ball of bushy-eyebrowed Caledonian brusqueness may wish to investigate the second season of the BBC news media thriller series The Hour. As a grizzled veteran news man, Capaldi presents a masterful performance of tightly controlled rage. His disintegration in grief in the final episode teeters on the precipice but never loses the viewer's sympathy.

That was unexpected, but in laughed. I wish the BBC would hurry up already with announcing more Blu-ray releases of Classic Who. And season 12 in Europe again while we're at it...

Hmm... still trying to decide whether to pre-order season 18 on blu-ray or not. Missed on season 12 like many others, so there's also that. Tom's final season is kinda bad, but that packaging is once again so yummy. Well at least there's State of Decay and Warrior's Gate which are both good stories.

18 is one my faves so I preordered from zoom when amazon hiked the price to over £50. I missed out on Season 12 but I did get Season 19 and that looks great plus they went all out on including most of the DVD extras plus new HD extras for each story.

So I guess I'm re-dipping on all of these on Bluray. Still want that Season 12 repressing

Well, i gave in and preordered that set just in case it goes oop like season 12. Thinking about Tom's lovely smile made me do it! I just couldn't resist. And out of respect for my favourite Doctor and his recent 85th birthday. Keep 'em coming.

Season 10 is solid... buuuuut I wish they'd hurry up and do Season 7. That's such a great season. One of the very best.

I believe there's more work to be done with that season, because yeah, it's great and it would have made a lot of sense to start with it.

7 is definitely one of the best. Spearhead especially is up there as one of the greatest season openers ever, and Inferno feels like a true season finale in an era that didn't really do those for the most part. Very effective that one. And I adore Liz, bit of a crime that she was only there for such a short time. I like Jo but it's never quite the same again.

Also, Benton is better than THAT TRAITOR YATES.

Having a competant female character to challenge the dandy third Doctor worked so well. Jo was lovely, but I don't prefer the 'make us a cup of tea love' sort of feeling you get from it, espescially in contrast to Liz (and then SJS).

Pertwee arguably has the most seasons that feel like seasons of the original early Doctors. 7, 8, and 11 all stand as strong 'seasons' for me.

But this will be the third (maybe fourth) time I've bought Green Death, and I doubt I'll ever hesisitate to buy a better version of it. It's brilliant TV. Definitely laying a lot of the ground work for modern Who. It's held up brilliantly other than that one giant flying insect.

Liz was a great companion and more than held her own against the Doctor. Part of what makes Spearhead such a good story is that Liz and the Brigadier are basically leading the show for the first episode or two, and it's so good you almost don't even miss the Doctor.

Sort of related but not really -- seems like the rumor for the next animated missing episode release is The Faceless Ones. If true, might indicate that the animation team seems to be moving in more or less chronological order.

I have no idea about Liz, I've watched very little of Classic Who, but I do enjoy it whenever I watch it. Very curious about the next season on blu-ray, really enjoyed the season 18 and 19 boxsets.

I did not get a notification for this post so uh, I'm replying a bit late.

But yes! Benton is way better than THAT TRAITOR YATES! haha

I really adore the character dynamics in general in Pertwee's first season. Like Blater said it already works great with just Liz and the Brig early on in Spearhead. Bit of a shame that Liz never gets a proper farewell. Could have done something with her appearance in The Five Doctors... Hm. :/

But yes, I'm not going to complain about buying the season with the one with the maggots in it! It's great stuff.

Would like to see season 25 or 26 next.

Me too! Curious how noticable the picture upgrade will be though. Those later seasons have always looked a bit iffy and I don't know if there's much that could be done about it.

Last season really ham fisted some of the theming and emotions. That spider episode was really something else. We know Trump is an idiot, do we really need a Doctor Who episode spelling it out for us in such a terrible way? Also, just shooting the spiders is a more dignified way of dying than having them slowly starve to death in a small room, but whatever. Can't have the Doctor killing things because... He's never don't that before?

Also the Rosa Parks and Demons of Punjab episodes could've, and imo, should've done away with the sci-fi plot elements. Have the episodes play out the same, but without those elements. They both would've worked just as well, if not much better without them. Making the group notice that they're people short on the bus and having them figure out that they were always there without any intervention would've worked terrific and wouldn't require such a meh character to be a villain. Hell, have them be the reason that Rosa was kicked off of the bus. They could've had an even stronger emotional ending, because they had to force her off to keep history as is, instead of changing it just to be kind.
Punjab, same story, have them be there just to witness the history and remove the aliens. There was no need for them whatsoever, I do like them, but they're not needed in the slightest.

I do hope they keep these kinds of stories for the next series, but they can, and absolutely need, a rewrite by a more experienced writer. The current couple of non Chibnall made amazing setups, now have someone else make the finishing touches (or have them just remove the sci-fi stuff, that would be fine as well).
