https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/25/health/maine-student-loan-relief-trnd/index.html

Maine draws about 36 million tourists each year with four seasons' worth of enticements, from white sandy beaches to world-class skiing.

But the northeasternmost US state can't seem to get enough young people to move there.
So, officials have hit upon the ultimate incentive: Move to Maine, and they'll help you pay off your student loans.
When you move to Maine, the money you spend toward paying your student loan debt each year is subtracted from your state income taxes. For instance, if you pay $1,800 toward your loan and owe the state $2,000 in taxes, you'll only end up paying Maine $200.

"We need to import people," Wildes said. "We need to attract people from other states for our workforce."
STEM majors -- who study science, technology, engineering and math -- could even get a check back from the government -- if their loan payoff amount outweighs their taxes. Non-STEM majors fall under a non-refundable tax credit program, which means they'd owe $0 in state taxes under the same scenario.
Anyone else looking for a change of scenery?

Real talk: Maine is gorgeous, but are there actually jobs to support the people that come in? If you have a remote job, fucking perfect place to live.

I went to school in New Hampshire, and I absolutely love it there, and all the time I say I would move back... IF there were enough jobs there.

Dammit, I already live here. I should move out of the state for a bit and then move back.

This is going to work great until they stop it.

Manitoba had a similar program, go to school here and the provincial government will give you a 10% tax rebate on your tuition a year, up to 60% overall. This worked well until the NDP got voted out and the PCs took power and that was the first thing on the chopping block. Luckily I was just finishing up the program when this happened, but I know plenty of people who weren't as lucky. And the cut wasn't retroactive, one year you got 10%, the next, irregardless of when you graduated you got nothing.

So you only get it as re-inbursement for state taxes? You're going to have to do better than that to tempt me Maine.

The article makes it seem like you might already qualify.

Matthew Glatz was a STEM major when he graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Maine. He was also $60,000 deep in student loans, he told CNN.

After graduation, Glatz wasted no time to sign up for the tax credit program, he said. He now owns his own catering and food truck company, SaltBox Cafe, and since he's self-employed, has greater control of his student loan payments and refund amounts.
Most college graduates in Maine, he said, are well aware of the program -- and more people out of the state need to find out.

"It's fantastic," Glatz said. "Maine is a great place to live and work, and any incentive you have to show people that and make them realize that is a benefit."

Hmm. That's actually not bad. Probably about $5k free student loan money a year if you're making north of 50k.

Yeah Maine's a pretty nice place and I honestly cant imagine leaving it right now but unless you work in the medical field in any capacity don't expect to have an easy job search.

Let's see......

In terms of racial diversity, Maine has a population consisting of 94.8% Caucasians, 2% two or more races, 1.2% African Americans, 1.1% Asians, and .8% other races including Natives.

No thanks. I'll stay in a state that's less cold with more diversity.

Lol, I grew up in Maine and moved away because in-state tuition was just as expensive as out-of-state and the programs were lacking. I'm sure my mother will message me about this later. Job prospects there are still miserable, though. My whole family is still there.

Huh, I'm actually job hunting right now after graduating with a CS degree with a decent student loan debt. Any downside to trying to leave Maine after getting my 2 years or so of experience? Guess I'll send some applications that way, no clue how the software engineering market is over there though.

I am seriously considering this now. I have over $200k in student loans and my wife has over $100k. It is ruining our lives to the point where we have no money really for anything else. I have 2 kids who have even gotten to meet any of their family members on my side because we work in a district that wont give raises and our student loan payments just wipe us out every month. I wonder how hard it would be for 2 teachers to find decent jobs in Maine.

You should seriously consider this. Maine is nice.
