Has anyone heard if the game lets you skip missions if you fail it a few times, like in the first game? I never would have passed the final mission if it weren't for that.

Let's see...

I hate the controls (how the character runs and how the cars drive is just UGGGHH), the gameplay "hook" of doing missions which is like mostly chasing some guy on foot or in a car and then gunning them down (and also how you fail a lot of missions just because the guy drove too far away from you), the rudimentary gunplay, and the story in general.

You just described RDR word for word.

In the grander scheme of things nobody will remember that one critically-lauded game received a slightly higher aggregate score than another well-reviewed game.

Games like God of War, Mario Odyssey, RDR2 and BOTW will be collectively remembered – among many others – as the apex of this generation.

The rest of this is just pissing contests and tribal nonsense that I don't get.

I'm glad when great games review well but some people take this shit to an entirely different level of lunacy.

It's a reviews thread, everyone is insane in here, didn't you know?

Eh, probably won't like this either then.

Creatively, like with the writing and the general tone of the game, it's far different from GTA. It's much more serious and grounded without the wackiness or parody found in GTA. But mechanically and control-wise this isn't entirely dissimilar from previous R* games. And while they've changed up the formula of missions and how the player acquires them, it's still at the end of the day a mission-based game.

Yep, skip it. RDR is a Rockstar open-world game, it's not for you.

Ok thanks guys!

It's way lighter on the cringe-tastic humor and "satire" that's prevalent in the GTA games.

Seeing this here and in a few reviews has made me much more likely to play this game at some point. The "everything's awful, but that's funny!" aspect of GTA V put me off the whole thing so much.

It sounds like your issues are deeper than mine, but for what it's worth I absolutely hated both GTA IV and V (got like 30 minutes into V before I stopped) and liked the first RDR for the most part.

I agree with those people though that there is a bias towards Rockstar and Nintendo. Regardless of how good BOTW was I could've told you it would score a high 90 regardless b/c they always do. Skyward Sword was hated by many players yet reviewers showered it with great scores anyway. I just think there are other games out there that are just as good if not better than a GTA4 or GTA5 yet you don't see them getting a 97-98 MC.
what are some recent games that you think deserved a 97 or 98 recently that didn't get there?
deserve may not be the right word maybe, since these scores are just an aggregate of personal opinion of reviewers, but i'm curious what games you think were snubbed from getting to those numbers.

Game looks phenomenal but I just can't bring myself to get hyped to play it. Like, I don't want to have watch 1000 animations as a part of the gameplay loop. As drop dead gorgeous and detailed as this game is, I haven't seen the great "gameplay" yet. Am I missing something?

Except there's no more bias towards them than any other highly praised publisher or developer. If there were, they'd have won a lot more of the majority of GotY awards than they actually have

Hmm...maybe those games always score in the 90's because they're of quality. I mean, Naughty Dog games always score in the 90's. Is there a free pass for them as well? Uncharted 4 also has a somewhat mixed reception online and it too was showered with praise and GotY awards online

Why does it matter? I wouldn't give GTA V a 70, let alone a 97, but you don't see being salty that it scored higher than some of my favorite games

This doesn't make a difference. The actual score is 97 for both versions.
Why separate the versions then? and why would someone even bother reviewing the Xbox version if nobody is supposed to look at the Xbox scores? And I mean if the Xbox version would've been terrible and every reviewer who played that version would've given the game 7/10, would the actual score for both versions still be 97?

Edit: I know how you're thinking. But think this way, if someone is planning on buying the Xbox One X version then they'll likely be looking at the Xbox score. So I find it odd to just pretend that it's not there. For whatever reason, from an Xbox gamer's perspective the game currently sits at 98 on Metacritic.

Watching Jeff Gerstman's indifference as Brad played live a while ago...lol. Not a fan.

Talking about BotW hype doesn't really make sense considering the game had a number of bad showings, and was being crapped on until previews starting hitting prior to release. Even after it's great showing at E3 2016 there was a lot of skepticism about the game. If anything it took gamers and reviewers by surprise.

Yup, wasn't the plateau the only part demod? People were so shook by them scores lol. It even shocked me because of it was being received in the reviews which was unimpressive or average.

Probably not. Trying to have someone convince you otherwise is likely just going to lead to disappointment. You should know if the gameplay you've seen will be enough to keep you hooked or not.

I was kind of thinking the same thing and I wonder why Rockstar cannot prpose 2 modes : Cinematic ( the current game ) and Arcade ( without all the slow animations ).

From the Kotaku review it sounds like the Gunplay and controls are what you might expect, the rudimentary hit-scan game play from RDR and GTA.

Am I correct in saying its possible to play without a mini-map and follow directions? Would love to play an open world game without markers but I'm curious how well playing this way actually works in practice.

Jeff has just never been into a Rockstar game period.

I also don't think he loves or really enjoys many singe player open world experiences. He literally couldn't care less about games like RDR2 or Witcher 3.

Walking over to my Gamestop to get my group letter ticket now. Anyone else picking their's up there too?

Can't even remember the last time I did this for a game, won't again until Cyberpunk.

Still kind of crazy that he's literally the only individual person/reviewer banned from the site that I'm aware of, but whatever.

After the recent unearthing of Danny O'Dwyer's tweets (granted, older), which IMO are worse than anything Colin ever tweeted out, I wonder if he's next.

Be careful now. No one likes it when you call out cognitive dissonance on here.

Danny O'dwyer is obviously not racist (same as colin) but he's a liberal full on. Unlike Colin who would consider himself more of a conservative even though he leans liberal on social issues (LGBT/abortion etc.). Danny being a full liberal keeps him safe.

People only care about labels afterall.

NPCs give you more detailed directions when you have the mini-map off, but it would be a serious achievement if they can pull it off and it be enjoyable all the way through the game. pretty much all open world games' pace and flow is designed around the mini map and the info it gives you so i think removing that and the game still playing well requires way more than just NPCs giving better directions.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. Clearly dredged up old tweets like people going after James Gunn. Not representative of the person at all.

This still doesn't make sense. The PS4 version is the one most reviews so it got the correct meta, it's the same as GTA IV for Xbox 360.

Yes, this is the game i thought of RIGHT when I submitted that reply. He did gush about it, but I'm having a hard time remembering other open world games he enjoyed. Espeically a rockstar game. He didn't care for any of them. He didn't even like Last of Us, albeit something awful happened around the time that game came out... (rip ryan :( )

That's really why I can't get into Giant Bomb. Jeff is just indifferent to practically everything. Nothing ever excites him that I've ever seen, and he's just so cynical to the point that it's off-putting.

I like GB, but yeah, the number of times someone there has said, "It's...fine, yeah, it's fine" drives me nuts. It devalues the art of each game and the hard work people put in, and is nowhere close to the enthusiasm I have for gaming as a medium, how much it still excites me, in my mid-30s.

lol i'm sorry. i was replying to a post saying "i'm waiting for a sale to get the game on switch" so i thought it's obvious i'm not talking about rdr :)

Yeah I saw that after I followed the conversation backwards. Starting with your post just threw me off is all. Gave me a chuckle.

I stopped following GB after Davis died but yeah, that's just how Jeff is. He'll get excited for something dumb like 50 Cent Blood in the Sand and then poo poo something that's clearly good. Thankfully having other people around helps balance things out.

So you'd rather have him fake interest? He wasn't a fan of the first game and this isn't changing things enough for his taste. I'd rather have a dude be authentic rather than fake it to try to fit what everyone else does.

Honestly I find it hilarious but it does get annoying when you love a game so much and they really don't care. Keep in mind they're all pretty jaded about the industry and have been doing this for decades (well not the younger staff and Dan)
