Shame to hear R* is stubbornly clinging to their unfun and clunky gameplay mechanics, but I'm mostly buying the game to spend the weekend wandering the forests and fields with headphones on, curtains closed and the HUD turned off then probably forgetting about the game altogether sometime next week and all the atmosphere praise sounds like I'll get exactly what I'm looking for, so I'm not particularly disappointed by the news or anything like that.

It absolutely deserves criticism, though.

Only 5 reviews so far? Did they send out review copies this late?

Already any words on how it runs on an og PS4?

I'm getting this tomorrow, but lots of these reviews are confirming some of my concerns with the game tbh.

That's probably for the best though, rather than going in expecting it to be mindblowing.

I have to say that Eurogamer review is convincing me to not buy it. I want to love Rockstar's games but they are always so lacking in gameplay and fun to me.
I'll wait for your impressions.

I must be in the extreme minority because I've never had a problem with how these games control.

It was admittedly a little funky in GTA4 but after that I felt they achieved a pretty good balance between the weight and physics of the character and playability. I'd honestly be disappointed if their gameplay felt like something out of a Naughty Dog game. (Which I love but for entirely different reasons)

It has already 22 reviews that are 95 or below that's nearly as much as Breat of the Wild who has 27. So forget about 97. In my humble opinion...
Most of the big name sites already reviewed it and only Edge left I believe, if it gets a 10 from them then it's going up to 98, either way it isn't dropping to 95.

I do not remember where I read it but I am 99% sure you can toggle this option to not have to tap to sprint but I don't know what the alternative is. I think just holding forward like in the new AC games.
Thanks, I just spoke with a mate who has a copy and he thinks it is maybe tap once and hold? he is checking for me later.

More like, extreme majority. If it was such a big problem, then GTA 5 wouldn't still be one of the best selling and most played games out there. And the online mode is all about gameplay.

No, your initial point was that 10/10 should mean perfect. That's not the case. If it were, then scales would stop at 9.9.

Of course some can call a game perfect, but 10/10 should not be reserved just for perfection.
Agree to disagree. This is why 7 is seen as average and 5 is seen as shite. Strongly disagree...

Germany
Die Zeit, a German, weekly newspaper of record, writes,
The video game 'Red Dead Redemption 2' is an opulent work of art. It narrates the Wild West, nature, violence, death. And it transcends all present boundaries of the medium
It is "a monumental narrative" and "exceptional violent". It feels, according to Die Zeit, like a Great American novel and the game also refers to Iñárritu's The Revenant and Jarmusch's Dead Man, and draws parallels to Melville's Moby Dick in regards of Arthur's relationship to Dutch. The newspaper praises the corporality (heavy footsteps, moving fur in the wind, rattling spurs, etc.) of Arthur that has never been seen before in that genre. They also draw a connection to Cormac McCarthy's novels in regards of RDR2's immersion and presentation of the West. They highly praise the nature and landscapes and compare those panoramas to transcendentalists like R. W. Emerson, and that RDR2 is the video game of Natural Writing that tries to win back the lost experience of nature. Die Zeit also praises the complexity and atmospheric depth of the game.

If you understand German, you can read the whole write-up here.

A review consensus being higher than your own opinion is the most embarrassing time in this industry's history? How skewed is your perception of reality?

The reviews of GTAIV did not accurately reflect the general concensus of most players, and how the game is regarded today, which only revealed itself after extended play. There was a clear schism between it's gameplay and narrative that didn't work - and whilst it's physics were more advanced than GTAV in many ways, it was markedly less fun to play. Which is why Rockstar dialled them back. It isn't one dude's opinion the reviewers got it wrong.

They got it right for V though. That game is incredible, with some convoluted and laborious design choices. I just wish the script was better. That's my major fault with these games. If I had faith in RDR2's script, I could overlook some clunky mission design.

Always need to read at least one of the more negative reviews to hamper my hype and get a grasp of reality that this is a video-game, not a transcendental experience. This way I'm rarely disappointed with the game.

You really don't remember how bad the media was during IV's release do you? I'm not even talking about reviews if you watched the podcasts or vids they did around the time it released they said everything but "it cured my cancer". There's a reason to this day it's still looked at as one of the most embarrassing times for the media and it's not because of the score.

Gamergate was more embarrassing.

That's not the media which is what I meant by this industry. Sorry I should have been more clear there.

So I do not have the time right now to go through all the reviews but what is the general opinion on the story? That's what matters the most to me.

Outside of Max Payne 3 I've always found the shooting in their games average at best, gets the jobs done, but I'd love if they could hit the Max Payne 3 high again. The movement I only really have a problem with in GTA4,cars feel like boats and walking in tight spaces could get kinda awkward.

Slant, Kotaku and Polygon reviews regarding controls and fighting have ruined all my hope to see the Rockstar formula evolves for this game. Anyway, still a day one pruchase, to enjoy a gorgeous monthly balad before Hitman 2.

Man, the GTA crew in this thread are making discussion impossible.

If you don't know about the critical uproar surrounding GTAIV and the subsequent backlash, the that's your ignorance, it's not our responsibility to educate you.

Yeah, controls definitely aren't an issue for Rockstar games, although they are unique in many ways.
I probably am in the minority liking 4's vehicle physics over 5, though. :)

When does the Xbox version unlock in Europe? Midnight my local time, midnight GMT or some other time?
