During the 3 years I spent in college, wearing sandals WITHOUT socks was deemed weird by everybody. It was normal to have the socks on even back in 2015.

Pretty much. I don't get the big deal about socks with sandals but I do know peoples feet are minging
i wish it were the norm, foot odor during commute in summer is horrendous over here.

It is not fashionable, but wearing thick socks with sandals on a cool day feels really good. This does not apply if the weather is prohibitive for shorts; socks and sandals with long pants only. I have a pair of sandals I keep by the door, year round, that I slip into when I go to the mailbox. That's a nice walk on the right day.

It's always been weird and massively pointless. That's not exactly changing now. You can tell people who wear socks with it aren't exactly walking on beaches with that attire .
There are people who can wear anything and would still be cool or sexy.

It's been just about the only fashion don't that everyone on earth knows. So of course 'cool' people gonna try it out. Honestly I think it looks alright if you have a 90's aesthetic.
