They should only be grainy if you're using the digital zoom. Are you sure you're using optical zoom? Isn't only available on the 7+ and only works for zooms up to 2X, zoom any more than that and you're using digital zoom.
Sorry by 7 I meant 7+ and yeah I'm just tapping 2x before snapping the pic. Idk maybe it's just poor lighting. /shrug

I'm definitely not an expert but from what I understand the 2X zoom doesn't always necessarily use the telephoto lens, it does depend on lighting and other variables.

That's part of the reason I went with the XR, I know I'll miss the optical zoom to an extent but it only goes up to 2X, that's a little enough difference that you can usually just move the phone closer and get the same shot.

So after weeks of debating between the XS and the XR I finally pull the trigger on the XS tonight.

I get the phone home and now for the first time in iCloud history the service is is having major issues for many hours now. I cannot download my backup from the cloud. Have tried dozens of times now.

edit: finally a full reset of the phone allowed me to successfully restore from my backup.

The XR will likely shoot better portraits in low light for exactly that reason. The XS will either try to manage with the slower telephoto or fake a telephoto shot with 2x digital zoom. The XR has a faster lens for portrait shots. It's going to be the superior configuration in many situations.

They really just need to let the XS and XS Max pick between the telephoto or wide angle for portrait mode. Just stick the 1x/2x button in there like the standard photo mode. Maybe default to 2x and flash a warning the first time you pick 1x that it'll only work with people.

I read and watched a lot of reviews today, and it seems the XR will have an advantage in very low light situations only, but in every other regard the XS wins. The extra camera makes separation between the background and subject more accurate as one example.

Why go with the one with the lesser screen quality. The decision was easy for me as I bought one today.

I never thought the iphone 8 had a bad screen? By all accounts the color calibration on the Xr is extremely close to the Xs.

I would REALLY only consider an Xs if you do content creation by taking videos with the iPhone Xs which has the benefit of the telephoto lens, that may help some.

Or if you watch a ton of movies and the resolution will be that little be more pleasant and you get deeper blacks on the OLED screen.

Most photos and videos taken with the iphone camera itself isn't going to be fully utilising the 'deep blacks' because low light photography/videography is still terrible on phones.

I think the Xr is kind of compelling for $250 less.

Easy, I can live with paying the cost of the 128gb XR but I can't justify the cost of the 64 or 256gb XS Max. And by all accounts the screen is really nice on the XR, so it's not really a big deal at all. Worth it for the battery life.

So I got an XS for myself and my wife.

Is it a good idea to use phone all the way to 1% and then do a full charge or is that hogwash? What do you guys recommend?

Not necessary with today's battery tech. I do like to run it down to ~10% or so every now and again, just to see how much mileage I can get out of a full charge.

There was some truth to that while phones used Nickel based batteries or when early Lithium based batteries needed a calibration once in a while so the software could tell the actual battery status. The battery lifetime is still defined by charge cycles which is pretty good but there are also some things to consider. The most important is that batteries posses a certain range where the chemistry in the cell is working more efficiently. Depending on the used electrode it is somewhere below a potential of 3.9V or something. That figure is usually printed on the batteries and the electronic won't charge over that threshold (for hadheld devices at least).
So it is okay to not charge the phone more than 80% or something. That is also the level where manufacturers ship their batteries. It is the least harmful zone where the cell works the best.
It is probably also beneficial because it is the range where batteries are getting warmer than usual and the chemistry als works best at around Room temperature. You also shouldn't maybe go full empty or go the red zone. The chemistry also straining harder falling down a distant threshold.

My advise would be charge whenever you like it but don't drain the battery to the red blinking battery icon and keep the phone maybe on a cool spot while charging over night.

"To perform a hard reboot on the iPhone X, press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then do the same for the Volume Down button. Follow up by pressing the Side button, and hold until the display suddenly shuts off — about 10 seconds."

^^ Cut and paste from google, but it really does work if you have a severe responsiveness issue. If it's a battery issue leaving it plugged in for a few minutes well help, but so long as the phone is on I would try the above method.

There's still so many apps that look like total blown up crap on the XS Max, the Facebook and Google apps being prime offenders. Weirdly Google Maps looks fine but everything else still doesn't support the new size class, including YouTube which is really disappointing. Fingers crossed the updates start to come soon.

For a few days I have been wondering why my apps are all slow to load when it requires an internet connection then someone tells me it's a known problem? Anyone else experiencing issues with WiFi and LTE dropping?

Ya, same. It has gotten a bit better with 12.1 if you aren't on it, but we just have to wait for a fix and hope there isn't a hardware issue.

So about a month and a half in, I'd have to say this is probably my favorite version of the iPhone. Love the screen, a large OLED is most welcome, and I adjusted to the lack of home button and notch far more easily than I would have anticipated. A notch less screen future would of course be ideal whenever that happens, but the thing is much less of an issue than I was worrying it would be. And the gestures work great, instant and responsive and natural. Overall the phone looks great with a great display, and of course performance wise and photo/video is top notch.

On the negative side FaceID is solid but for me still not quite as seamless as TouchID was. In general usage it's great, but certain moments were I'm not looking directly at it enough when I want to check my phone happen a little too frequently. A couple of my main apps seem to lose the option to use FaceID randomly and that's annoying. And some of the OS interactions feel less intuitive with FaceID, like say a new app download that requires a double click of the side button vs just reaching to tap the TouchID home button.

In a side note, finally saw an XR today and it's a great phone. Screen still looked good and if it wasn't for the fact that I wanted the larger OLED it would have been an easy buy.

Any recommendations for screen film (not glass) protectors?

Preferably I want them to cover the notch and just have a cutout for the speaker grille.

So, finally ordered XS for my wife. Why it is so hard to find a good cover though? I thought we have pretty simple wishes - thin, with cover (preferably with on/off function) and some nice positive colors (like dark red or blue), and there would be plenty of options. But I find either some massive things with 20 credit card slots, or black/brown man wallets or bumpers. :/ Any suggestions?

I'm still having serious issues with wifi reception on my XS Max. I can easily connect to my router from a certain location on my iPad but the iPhone drops out 80% of the time. I hope it's fixable.

Umm... is there anyway to turn off that white home bar at the bottom of the screen?
Not permanently.

Though there is a hacky way for when you're using just one app for a prolonged period, via enabling of 'Guided Access' accessibility setting (power button triple click to toggle on, double click to turn off with face ID). That locks the device to your current app and removes the bar.

Might be possible to do via Shortcuts these days. I haven't checked.

I really wish the XS allowed you to choose which lens was taking the portrait mode photo. This is from CNET's XS/XR camera comparison. XS beat it out in almost every category except here, in low light portraits, where the XR obviously uses the wide angle lens. Beyond low light, there are just situations I could see wanting to take a portrait and have the framing of the wide angle lens.

Call me crazy, but considering the price difference and the fact that there's a whole extra camera, I'm kinda of the belief that there should be exactly zero instances where the XR can take a better photo. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but more money should generally mean better product.

As much as I love this game, only on chapter 2 and I'm struggling with the controls so much I think I will shelve it and wait for the PC version :(

Tried all the tips posted for better controls and I just can't do it.

So for someone new to the Apple ecosystem any apps or tips I should absolutely know about?

I got a Xs last weekend and I'm loving how smooth everything is so far. Only wish it was a little easier to handle with one hand, and face id is still very inconsistent for me.

dunno, one of the things i love best about it is integrating LastPass app with FaceID and using my face to log into all my apps and websites.

my tips for newcomers would be:
You can have a trackpad similiar to laptops if you either force touch the keyboard or long tap the spacebar on a XR. It makes editing and formatting much easier.
If you are reading an article with Safari you will see a button popping up left to the browser bar. That's the reader mode and it turns off every ad, videos and alike. You can also choose the background color, font and the sizes on the fly.
There is also a neat feature to see the history of your closed websites if you long tap the back button.

Check maybe the security settings and safaris anti-track features. They are great imo.
Regarding apps:
There is no must use app, but I still have the 1password subscription for some months. I think I will change that to apples icloud keychain. Others mentioned lastpass butI think icloud's keychain should be okay. Android had the "better" Keepass solution, but lastpass, keychain, 1password or alike are more convenient. You can also use them with faceid and that's absolutely great.
Apple's shortcut is great to build some macros. I would suggest to browse the reddit page r/shortcuts for some cool shortcuts.

Can someone who uses Instagram check this one for me please?

Start the Instagram app afresh and swipe left to go to the camera viewfinder where you snap the stories etc. Does your phone make a slight click noise and barely vibrates upon showing the camera input? I'm trying to figure out what makes this noise but I believe it's the taptic engine registering the slight vibration. The weirdest thing is it doesn't happen always when I swipe left to the camera. I hope there isn't something wrong with my phone.

About to pull the trigger on the XS. Was going to buy it last night and get on the Apple Upgrade Program, but started getting in my head about credit checks, taking out an extra loan, etc. I have a good credit score and am not worried about getting rejected or anything like that. At the same time, if I can afford to pay for the whole phone in cash upfront, is there really any reason to get up on the upgrade program at all? Other than avoiding the $1400 sticker shock. Given the loan is interest-free, doesn't seem like there's any cost difference in buying it outright or leasing it over 24 months, but is there any real benefit or drawback to financing it through the upgrade program vs. buying it?

The main benefit of the program is that you can get a new phone after just 12 payments. When next years iPhone comes out you'll just be able to get the new one, despite only paying off half your lease (the lease basically restarts). So you'll always have the latest and greatest phone, you won't have to skip a year (or two), won't have to try and find someone to buy your phone on eBay or Craigslist when you wanna upgrade, etc. Just kind of removes all the hassle from phone upgrades and gives you peace of mind with Applecare.

Popped into the apple store here in Sydney to see how much i'd get for my iPhone X 64gb and Apple Watch 3 LTE 42mm --> with a view to getting rid of them and jumping up to the XS Max.

Didnt pull the trigger, will likely go back in tomorrow as i think i can get a bit more $$ through one of the other mobile cash recyclers but for the jump from X to XS Max - anyone here done that? How did it go? Worth it, or hold fast?

I like the increased screen space and the colors are gorgeous and the camera on X does suck but still...seems pretty similar.

I don't think you'll find too many people who will wholeheartedly recommend upgrading from the X to XS/XS Max. Just wait for a more substantial upgrade next year

I noticed a 2cm scratch in my screen a few days ago, which was shocking because I haven't had any rocks in my pockets with the phone?

Kinda pissed about it, but I guess that's the tradeoff for going phone naked.

Are dead pixels a common thing for OLED screens? I've never had any device with OLED panel before the Xs, however, I did notice some tiny dead/stuck pixels on my screen, returned the phone, got a replacement and again had dead pixels. They're so small that I bet most people won't see them even you point them but I'm so paranoid and dreadful about dead pixels that I can't enjoy any screen knowing they're there (my OCD doesn't help either).

I'm really curious to see if it's indeed a common quirk of oled because I've never been so unlucky on the matter, especially on an iPhone device. In fact, my only iPhone which had pixel issues was the 3G back in the day. So for anyone who want to go pixel hunting this might come in handy: https://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php

I just got my XS Max yesterday, upgraded from an iPhone 5 so this is like super high tech lol...

I backed up everything to my iTunes and everything transferred over (apps, photos, text) except my music.

I'm having trouble adding music to my phone because it won't allow me to drag and drop....It looks like i need to make a library in itunes and sync it over? Is that the case?

Honestly if it would work with your needs, you should consider signing up for iTunes Match or Apple Music and never have to bother plugging into iTunes to sync libraries ever again.

I got my XS yesterday after having a 6S for god knows how long. Really digging the OLED screen, camera, and general snappiness of it all. Not to mention the space bump from 16GB to 64GB. I don't really notice the notch as much as I thought I would, as much as it seems to be a necessary evil. The only thing I really don't like about this phone (besides the now lack of 3.5mm jack) is how the camera bump doesn't make the phone lay flush on a surface. I was sitting having lunch today and I like to read with my phone on the table and it rocks side to side when I touch the screen. Luckily my case coming in on Monday should fix that, but I honestly have no complaints if the phone were thicker to accommodate the camera bump.

I also miss Touch ID, gonna have to get used to Face ID. But I have to say how impressive Face ID works so far. It scanned my face initially without my glasses on and it reads me perfectly so far. With glasses/sunglasses, hats, etc on.
