I'm sure these insiders have a decent reason to believe it's fake. For all we know, Incineroar is Chrom this time around. Originally planned and teased from members of the development team in the know, but dropped or pushed back to DLC for whatever reason. It's happened before, could happen again. But I also understand that they are thinking about their livelihoods. They can't reveal why they know it's fake because they could burn an industry source forever. For game journalists, that's a big deal. Also, if they say they believe it and they are wrong, it's long-term credibility damage.

I don't really know what to believe. I'd love for it to be legitimate, because the fallout from it being fake and whatever it is we end up getting to close out the roster will be a sobering experience for the community.

You're not going to fake a leak and not put the most rumored character for Smash in your leak. Incinceroar and Ken are the two biggest rumored characters for Smash for the longest time now. Why do so much hard work to fake it all and leave out Incinceroar?
To fuel arguments like this very one.

alternatively, nintendo marketing execs are frantically calling everyone asking them to say the leaks are fake so it's a surprise when it's confirmed

what if Nintendo marketing team members have been sweating all day and they've been frantically calling everyone that they have the phone number of with a twitter account to beg them to go online and lower expectations for the roster because they know people are gonna fuckin hate Kencineroar after all this
Tbf, Ken's not the bummer. He's simply an echo and can't carry full hype on his own so it all leans on that other one.

Isn't the simple solution that many of these journalist and insiders have an nda after attending an event where they got to play a character who's not in this leak?

It would be fine if they were promoting skepticism or straight up said they don't 100% believe it because they have info that contradicts the leak and to be fair that is how it started.

But then starting bets on how if it's real they're going to lick cards or go into puddles just steps over that line. It's one thing to promote skepticism it's another to blatantly lean towards one side of the argument.

No because if they had any journalistic integrity they wouldn't even be part of the conversation. Instead everyones just a bunch of random theorists, and speculators that just deep dive the internet for clues like we do.

Or maybe we don't want to endanger the livelihoods of confidential sources who asked us not to share specific information just to appease internet commenters who insult us? Just maybe.

That's what you and everyone else keeps claiming but whether you want to believe it or not your sources could very well be wrong. Why can't you admit that?

Some of them are just having fun with it, just like us. Speculating and theorizing about a game we are all hype for is fun. Why do you think this thread is massive? And has had several before it? Talking about Smash, specifically new stuff, is fun.

Some are straight up saying the leak contradicts information they've been told, to be fair. Others aren't. For instance, I don't agree with those saying "this leak is fake, I'm not here to try and convince you, but here's a 10 minute video or article of me explaining why you should think it's fake." That stuff is dumb. Everything else is just for fun.

That's what I'm trying to tell people. In the grand scheme of things these are people's livelihoods behind closed doors. Nobody wants to lose their jobs or whatever.

The sources trust the people they're telling won't say anything to get them in trouble or lead back to them.

I never said they couldn't be wrong. I said I believe them when they say today's images are wrong. These are people that have consistently given me information that has proven to be true. I don't see any reason for me not to believe them now.

...what? I don't follow. What's wrong with "leaning towards one side of the argument?"

there's nothing nefarious about the insiders (outside of vergeben who sucks) but they can still be wrong

Journalistic integrity is different for video games. Lots of news outlets bring in experts to analyze and critique situations. All the big boys (not counting Fox because come on) do this. That leaves the actual anchors to just give you the facts. Video game journalists have to pull double duty so to speak. They provide facts and cover stories just as much as they do analyze, critique and speculate. Not really the same thing here.

Some insiders are just out for quick clicks, but not all of them are bad apples. Super valid point though, they can be wrong. The information they have could be wrong, or could've changed. Happens all the time.

So is there like 3-4 characters left.

Let's be honest. Incinceroar and Ken are hard locks. We need to cut the bs and stop debating them. They're both in.

So why should we believe certain people aren't willing to disclose why it's fake any more than some asshole put up a Snapchat of marketing materials for the new Smash game that has unannounced characters?

Like they both have the same argument that doing so would ruin their livelihood and alot of the fake arguments for now basically extends to the story being of some dude got marketing materials and used it to spring a leak on people by using characters people have been talking about for ages and still didn't include the one character everyone said would be in the game

I believe the insiders saying they know something that makes the leak fake, BUT the way they keep talking around it is reminds me of that one guy we all knew in high school.

"I've got a girlfriend."
"Oh, yeah? Who is she?"
"You don't know her. She goes to another school."

Why do people like leaking information to begin with? Because the thing they're leaking excites them as well as the community. If they're going to spill the beans of what they know, they have to have a reason for doing so. Is it to obtain a following? Is it to try and manipulate the conversation? Is it because they just want attention? Is it because they like brag? I personally have a friend that told me the entire story of God of War months prior to release because they work at Sony Santa Monica. But did I go spouting everything I knew including the secret ending over the internet? NO! Because I'm not trying to gain anything by doing so. All these people who are insiders have agendas. figuring them out is a person by person basis. If someone truly, really knew details they'd share them. There's no protecting sources when you can be insanely anonymous on the internet.

was it public information that the dude who was doxxed worked at that company before he got doxxed? if so, he could just be an innocent victim and the screens from the snapchat were never in france in the first place.

There's a lot of really convincing things about this leak, but in the end I can't bring myself to believe it. That would be too good of a roster to be true. The truth is probably closer to the middle of this and box theory, so I'm sticking with my belief of four characters left: two newcomers and two echoes.

SpawnWave said there's another character missing. I bet it's Sora. Vergeben said there's another Square rep. I guess I'm back to Ken, Incinceroar and Sora being in.

Ok fair enough. If what you heard does end up to be wrong though, I think you and everyone else who has that source should think twice down the road.
