It did a bit better then IX in terms of units. Revenue figure doesn't mean as much because the game as certainly more expensive to develop and localize vs IX.

Leave it to SE to f-up the release time window and place the game in super busy September. It got lost in the shuffle in September and everyone forgot about it afterwards.

I really wish SE released this in May - August as the game is great despite issues with music.

Now they have no excuse to not release DQXII in the west at the same time as Japan.

But that is for the next 2-3 years from now.

Dragon Quest games don't come out that often anymore.

These games get so much added in during localization, so it will always have a valid excuse to make them come out later. It improves the quality of the game.

I wonder if these results, like Nier Automata, will lead to a Xbox release, right now DQ is the last important SE series not on that platform. I'm not very confident, because SE commercial decisions are often senseless, like KH collections.

I dont care how it achieved its milestone. Im just happy to see the game do better than its previous mainline entry in the west!

Wow, this is very good news! I'm hoping this game will sell enough to satisfy S-E on further localizations.

Overall Square Enix didn't make the franchise grow at all since DQIX which doesn't bode well for future releases. If it released a month before things would have been much better.

I'm not so sure. I think no matter what Dragon Quest is limited by the the market for traditional JRPGs in the west.

If the (sub)genre is the limiting factor then there's still much more potential for the series. DQXI debut is lower than Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler's for instance.

You know, it says a lot that the first thing a few people thought of here was to make snide remarks against Nintendo like the world's biggest grudge holder, while simultaneously implying that franchises only succeed on PS consoles. The fact that DQXI sold well is great news, regardless of the system, is it really necessary for stupid console warring?

Amazing game, pacing is perfect. The only minor issue I had was the MCs hair design lol.

His silky, luxurious hair is actually a recurring gag for the first third of the game at least.

I prefer normal human hair over Western Bald Protagonists or Toriyama's usual go-to, Spikes Everywhere:

User Warned: Trolling
Do we need a thread for every detail out of the NPD report ? There's a ton of them and it'd be better to not split the discussion.

Still, very good but expected performance on the revenue side since it's a 60$ game and LE are counted.
LOL, excellent effort to come in and thread whine and then try to downplay. Good Effort!!!

All things considered ~300K or so in the west in the first month isn't bad at all considering the complete lack of marketing and sent-to-die release date.

Hopefully had S-E had reasonable expectation and will consider a simultaneous worldwide release for the next one. But the 30 years and counting of incompetence with handling the series in the west doesn't give me much hope.

I wonder if word of mouth helped.
I'm glad it's doing well, it's an amazing game.
Hell, I'll double dip for the Switch version (if it gets localized)

Nothing amazing, but a bit better than I expected.

Either way, it's a very good game. More people really should buy it.

SE really botched the marketing for this game. Also, why don't they every mention Akira Toriyama in their marketing? Surely, referencing the creator of DB could garner some interest?

"With designs from the creator of DB and DBZ".

Good, especially with no marketing at all, with Spider-Man at the same time. Game is great so far, also loving the characters and it is gorgeous.

Good good. Bring more DQ to PS platform please
This please. I'm glad it was finally back after DQ8.
It's been good to see Japanese games making a comeback over the course of this gen after a rough last gen.

This game has definitely been a very pleasant surpise so far and I'm not even a huge Dragon Quest-fan (only played 1, 2 and 8 before). Plenty of QoL-features that should become a standard. I hope the next installment gets to west earlier.

It's actually quite good to be able to keep up with DQ IX sales number. Did people call DQ IX a failure?

And this time without Nintendo's marketing muscle, or actually, barely any marketing.

2018, on top of being historical for Sony first parties with God of War and Spider-Man being on the moon, is also the year where two japanese juggernauts (Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest) finally came back on PlayStation and broke records. What more can you ask for ? The best VR game maybe ? Oh hey, we got that too !
saddest thing i've read in a while

keep hearing this but there's only so much marketing can do. if they have to brute force every DQ localization with $80 million ad campaigns they're not going to bother localizing at all; what it sold is probably in line with whatever they calculated was realistically worth the effort

look at titles like Nier, Yakuza 0, ect that "took off in the west"... what kind of marketing did they have? marketing matters but ultimately either the audience is there or it isn't

Yeah, it's crazy they don't even just for maybe a slight boost, considering how massive DBZ is here no matter how many years pass.

I wouldn't expect DQXI to match the legs of DQIX. IX had multi-player, and it was basically THE game to get on DS that summer. Single player RPGs typically don't have legs, and DQXI is much more likely to get lost in the shuffle with it's awful release date. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was completely absent from the NPD charts next month.

And they never have done it.

The closest thing they have done is adding Super Saiyan style transformation in DQ8 for the main character.

Look, to be warned for system wars without actually talking about the other systems takes a lot of dedication and experience. Not anyone can pretend to be at my level =)

You're not allowed to be enthusiastic about the PlayStation 4. It's only responsible for 2.7 percent of THE ENTIRE GLOBE'S internet traffic after all.

According to vgsales, the highest selling Dragon Quest game in America is the first one, believe it or not, at 1.5 million on the NES. Guarantee this one takes that crown, after a few discounts of course. Word of mouth will travel, game is too good.

Good to hear. I haven't played in about a week but I just left the desert town with the prince story arc. I don't know how early into the game that is, but I think I grinded too much and subsequently I've been blowing everything up on the way to the boat.

The game is wonderful and I am really happy Square at least sees it connected with people.

I hope this sets the new template for their jRPGs. Also shows people can react well to Toriyama so gives me hope for another Chrono trigger game.

Every time I take a screenshot ingame I'm like "wow... GG Square". Can't wait to see what's next.

I don't know, 1.5 million is a high number to beat. Though the game is getting a second release on Switch so that should help as well.

And no, that's console warring because it implies that this series (and MH) were nothing but failures on Nintedo consoles and only when in the arms of Sony does the series find success. Which is bullshit in either case.
