I love this movie so fucking much. The sequels too, and I'd go so far as to say there's very few trilogies that can match their overall quality. But that's something I'll talk about another time. Right now I just want to talk about the first.

KFP 1 = 9/10
KFP 2 = 9/10
KFP 3 = 8/10

I think the best way to start talking about the movie is to just post my favorite fight scene, which is the battle on the bridge between the Furious Five and Tai Lung.

Now bear in mind I love all of the other fights, but this one is my favorite for a couple of reasons:

- It shows how strong the Five are together. Before this scene you get glimpses at their strength and characters *saying* how good they are, but this is the scene that proves it.
- It shows how far Tai Lung has come. His prison escape gives you a glimpse at how good he is, but him taking down the Five by having to rely on pressure point attacks both shows how strong the Five are as well as what it takes to actually take them down. It's also a neat flashback to how Oogway took down Tai Lung in the past.
- It's just a well-animated fight. I mean look at that shit! You see how coordinated everything is, along with the desperation on the Five's attacks along with Tai Lung taking on Tigress and Viper with relatively no issues. It's just so exciting, and the finale helps with the anticipation of the upcoming fights.

The theming of the movie is top-notch, too. It shows that there's no shortcuts or magic secret to becoming great, and you should always strive for self-improvement. It's why Po was able to decipher the secret of the Dragon Scroll and why it was able to give him power noooOOOOOO while Shifu and Tai Lung were unable to. Shifu misunderstood what being the Dragon Warrior actually meant, while Tai Lung was so blinded by anger and pride that he couldn't interpret it even when Po flat-out explained it to him. And to Tai Lung, there was no bigger wound to his ego than being beaten by a BIG FAT PANDA.

Color is also a huge part of the theming as well. It took me a second viewing since most of it is so subtle, but two of the most important colors in the movie are green and gold. Gold, according to the filmmakers, represents heroism. Notice that during Po's training sequence features gold somewhat heavily. This is slightly more subtle with Tai Lung; his eyes are gold because he sees himself as the hero. Green also symbolizes knowledge, which is why Po's eyes are green since he has such a large capacity to learn kung-fu.

Honestly I can keep going on and on about how amazing this movie is (and I didn't even talk about how each member of the Five, along with Tai Lung and Po, actually incorporates their own animal style of martial arts because the filmmakers decided to go the extra mile, and how the only animals you see in the movie are animals that exist/existed in China). But really, just watch the entire series. I'll probably talk later about how much I love the second and third movies, but I really only wanted to start with the first. Just watch them! You won't regret it!

I don't remember shit about the enemies or the big bad of each movie, but the relationship between Po and Mr. Ping has a special place in my heart. Many feels were had.

I love the second one. The peacock's movement is crazy graceful. And the adoption story is nicely done .

Ugh I don't want to watch the 3rd one.

While the second one wasn't nearly as good, it was a decent sequel. The third one was a hot pile of garbage though.

My son enjoys the animated series. The little bits here and there that I have seen make it seem like it is good stuff.

I can't recommend the 25 minute Kung Fu Panda Holiday enough too. Sure, it's a holiday-themed television sppecial, but it actually serves as a really nice stopgap between the first movie and the second.

I expected/wanted to enjoy the movies more than I did. Just didn't quite do it for me.

But....not a horrible way to waste a few hours.

I really need to watch these, and the How to Train Your Dragon movies. I've kind of been meaning to for years now.

I don't watch a lot of animated movies anymore, or feel drawn to them like others, but there are some really good ones and I've heard good things. Same with Coco and Moana.

I beat the Kung Fu Panda video game twice.

Considering we'll probably never get another sequel movie, people may want to watch the Prime original series that seems to take place in the movie universe (unlike the Nick series which was debatable).

I didn't care much for the sequels (outside the crazy animation on the bird-bad-guy in the 2nd film). I wish the Furious Five had gotten to do more.

3 is fine, drags a lil in the panda village. But Po always levels up, in every movie. There are supposed to be 5...

I love the first two but couldn't stand the third. Po is a complete caricature of himself and the panda village being a vehicle for low-brow humor was immensely disappointing given the build-up at the end of the second. Villian was ok but nothing compared to Tai Lung or Shen. I will admit that it looks spectacular.

The Kung Fu Panda ride they opened in Universal Studios Hollywood was ok.

I love the first two movies, especially the second one due to its amazing finale. The third one, while still good, was just so disappointing in comparison.

I love these movies through and through. The stories are emotional, character interactions/development are great, and the fight scenes are phenomenal. Oogway is a damn machine.

Oh cool, a Kung Fu Panda thread

You know, even though it's not as good as the first two (but still pretty good), Kung Fu Panda 3 is freakin' beautiful to look at

I know the show doesn't have the budget of the movies, but I really love the show and how it further fleshed out the characters. It also had quite a lot of great fights too even with the lower budget, and although I enjoyed TMNT 2012 I wished it's fight scenes were on the level of KFP's. I also enjoyed the additional side characters too like Tai Lung's nephew Peng.

They also had a character Tsin voiced by R. Lee Ermey

The first movie is legitimately great. I love when the kids ask to watch it so I have an excuse haha.

My favorite shot is when Tai Lung is asking Shifu who made him what he is (almost to the point of torture; "who drove me to train until my bones cracked?" Dark stuff honestly), and when he's asked all of his rhetorical questions, he throws a polished gold tray at Shifu, who redirects it back. But when he's doing that, it slows down on his reflection in the tray. Great stuff

Edit: it's not the gold shield but a polished sword. It's about a 1:30 in the video of their fight above

I didnt really like the second one as much as people in this thread did, it really just lacked something to me, a lot of pos friendships felt more forced? especially with the tiger, they just go from hating each other to being the best friends in the sequel. and the side fighting characters were pretty much thrown away. the fights were cool though i guess

It actually slows down on his reflection in one of the blades when he deflects it

The show is pretty good. Anybody eager for more KFPanda should definitely check out the show.

I say the same thing about the How To Train Your Dragon TV show. These animated shows expand on the franchise and are really well done.

I think the first is a surprisingly good introduction to wuxia for kids, and I say surprisingly because this had all the potential to be a typical DreamWorks disaster just based on marketing and concept. But there is enough of an appreciation of the genre present that the humor and silliness don't upend it. You can still empathize with Po, Shifu, and even Tai Lung.

I think my favorite fight scene from 1 is Tai Lung vs Shifu because it is crossroads of their relationship visualized through martial arts, of Shifu realizing he was a shitty parent and Tai Lung having that second of thought that his warpath was immoral before digging his heels in and choking him out anyway. Also the music on that scene is ace; John Powell's score on the franchise is super underrated.

Tigress never hated Po, especially after Po yelled at Shifu in the first movie. In the video I linked above, Po is (rightfully) calling Shifu out for treating him like shit and admits that his self-image is one of the reasons why he stayed. Afterwards, the shot zooms out and Tigress is revealed to have heard all of it, and you can see regret on her face.

EDIT: I meant in the moment BEFORE the video I linked above, derp

To be honest it's my favorite movie of all time. The first two are easy 10's. The third, while not bad, feels like fanfiction.

It's also the fact that she and the Five failed to beat Tai Lung. It sort of humbled her aspirations of being the dragon warrior, and when Po succeeded she accepted him as a master.

Which of the characters could beat Taran Zhu from WoW?

I fucking cry during Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2 every time. I did last month when I showed to my GF who never watched it and thought it was lame. She loved every second.

Both are beautiful movies and hold beautiful messages.

I would disagree with Tai Lung having to rely on pressure point attacks to take down the Five.

Tigress decided to take out the bridge to stop Tai Lung, or at least slow him down. He beat that idea, and was clearly going to make it to the other side, so Tigress used a mid-air suicide attack to slow him down, relying on the perfect teamwork of her friends to restore the bridge and catch her. Which is a fantastic exchange, BTW.

But now Tai Lung is being opposed by Tigress, and he's utterly nonchalant about that, as well as being utterly nonchalant about standing on a bridge that's barely hanging on by a thread (as opposed to Tigress who totally has her guard up). And he's nonchalant with good reason, because he beats her, and everyone else, 1-on-1 (in spite of their varied attack styles). And then the Five go for a perfectly coordinated 5-on-1 teamwork attack which "beats him" well enough to buy the seconds they need to cut the bridge.

And then Tai Lung wins for real by using the rope to toss himself over the chasm and past the Five. Their best attacks managed to delay Tai Lung for a few seconds, and allowed them to destroy a bridge that he never needed. Tai Lung was playing with them. And they played remarkably well, earning his respect. But now he's past them. He won the game. He's on solid ground. His route is not contained. Their best teamwork attacks allowed them to delay him for several seconds, twice (for which he compliments them), but now they're up against the edge of the chasm. They're the ones cornered by him. If he wanted to defeat them, I'm sure he easily could, but as we learn in a moment, he doesn't want to defeat them.

With the game over, victory already in hand, he points out that he's been holding back, and he shuts down four of the Five with pressure point attacks, and then has Crane carry them back to Shifu and the Dragon Warrior as a warning that he's coming, because he wants them to be at their best and ready for him.

Basically, when Tai Lung first used that pressure point attack on Monkey, he wasn't using it because he needed to use it to stand a chance against the Five. A regular attack at that point would have injured/killed Monkey, which wasn't what he wanted. He wanted to spare Monkey (and the others), wanted to impress upon him/them the difference in their abilities, and he wanted to reveal his hand to show off to Shifu.

I would also say that Shifu was wrong when he said that Tai Lung sent them back unharmed because he was trying to create fear (aka: trying to win through mindgames and deception). Tai Lung did it because he wants the Dragon Warrior to get ready and come at him with his A-game without holding anything back. Shifu thought Tai Lung was trying to create fear because... Shifu has no such Dragon Warrior to send against Tai Lung, and he's desperately trying to contain his own fear (as well as the fear being experienced by Po and the Five).

Wasn't the first film actually praised by Chinese officials for how culturally respectful it was?

Also, I love this scene.
