That Asian racist comment in there though.

As far as Tetris being an esport, there is much more skill and talent here needed than the average shooter.

The first time I watched this clip I didn't realize Joseph was only 16 years old, that's amazing! Really love seeing younger players come out on top especially in such a classic game.

What version of Tetris is this and what are the rules for the competition? I feel like I'm actually pretty good at Tetris after watching that round.

Also why is it always that version of tetris? Does anyone know?
There are 3 broad flavors of competitive Tetris, roughly summarized:

NES - primarily score-based, the preferred format of longtime western players
TGM - primarily speed-based, the domain of Japanese arcade players
SRS - modern Tetris w/ VS modes, garbage, t-spins, and combos, primarily played online

It's two people playing separately against the computer.
They're playing head-to-head for score.

And I'm 99% sure that CTWC employs some kind of homebrew trickery to ensure that both players receive identical piece sequences, removing some RNG from the equation.

I feel confused as heck watching that. What's the "twist" that makes what they were doing hard? The older player just seemed to give up? I mean it can't be the speed at which they play, because you can go on youtube and find hundreds if not thousands of videos where people play tetris at a completely different speed, this looks like slowmotion compared to that

I assume the NES Tetris is more awkward to control. Seems like horizontal movement is really slow.

So if you had your way, having an opinion on esports = warnable, but insulting other users directly is perfectly OK.

Remind me where I directly insulted you? Unless you're insinuating that you jumping into a thread about esports to complain about the existence of esports, the literal definition of threadwhining, is apparently a "direct insult"

There's RNG that determines the piece sequence itself, but manual intervention to prevent the two players from getting different sequences.
Is this a setting in the game or somewhere else?
  1. Once the starting level is chosen, the ref will roll dice to determine the piece sequence.
  2. The players will set their games to the rolled sequence and the agreed upon level and push start simultaneously at the prompt of the referee. Referees will settle any disputes.

Why is James Chen there?

Not that I'm complaining, he is a great caster, I love how calm is his voice most of the time, except for the times that the hype really makes it necesary to start shouting, also, he seems like a stand up guy with lots of knowledges without being an ass

I should have clarified. "sport"? It's two people playing separately against the computer. By that logic, my mom is an athlete because she plays Peggle. At least with Overwatch or Gears or LoL or whatever, it's a squad, communicating, and it's more complex than this. I just think in general the whole "esports" thing is dumb, more so in this case when it's someone playing solo on their own.

"sport" = an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature
By what logic?
What a stupid post all-around. You make 0 sense and even contradict yourself.

I guess Archery isn't a sport and should be removed from the Olympics.

Try to ignore the thread derailment.

Really cool video. Tetris is such a timeless game. It's great to see kids that age still enjoying it enough to get to that level of play.

I can't believe that not only is this kid 16, it's also his FIRST tournament? My god. That's basically this kid's dream come true. Amazing.

The OP literally doesn't use the word sport. You're bringing a separate argument in this thread for no reason. Are competitions in non-athletic persuits not allowed? Should we cancel chess tournaments now? You're using nonsense logic and being a needless hater.

He knows about Tetris a lot, and the tournaments are getting bigger and bigger every year.

You accused me of shitposting. Funny how you didn't mention that in this latest post. I doubt that counts as "respectful and polite".

Tetris is a competitive physical activity. The physical requirements are just fine motor skills instead of gross motor skills. And they're not competing against the computer. They're competing against each other. They're trying to outscore each other with the same tile set.

Wow, that's cool

I actually want to see people playing grand master, with things like throwing trash at your opponent an everything else, but at the same time, I appreciate how entertaining was to watch a "clean and pure" tetris match

The OP literally said, "every esport player should aspire to". I had no idea people here were so sensitive about this. I haven't mentioned it since.

eSport =/= sport. You found the definition of "sport". eSport is a different word. In case you haven't noticed, it has an "e" in it.

People are typically sensitive to someone immediately jumping in to shitpost about something literally 4 posts into a thread.

Awesome video. Feel like the main interviewer was going to tear up at one point. Really gracious and humble stuff.

By the way, what is hyper tapping?

I cannot take something like this seriously as "esport". Come on.

What ?

You're overthinking the thing way too much. Tetris is still one of the most competitive games you can find. Just like Chess. It actually requires so much concentration and quick reflexes, it's crazy.

Jonas is a Tetris god and a humble man. Joseph is the new champion and i'm happy Jonas finally got someone who can challenge him properly. James Chen with the comentary is amazing too, love J.Chen !

I think this was brought up in this video:

Gameplay differences aside, the latency of GB/Nes Tetris is probably lower than most later versions.

Better explanation. Basically, it's "pure" Tetris with no gimmicks or exploits.
It's also an homage to the Nintendo World Championships, where Thor Aackerlund, the GOAT, played and won.

I've heard from people who have claimed to attend that they play on a modified version of the game with an option to select one of 1000 or so distinct piece sequences. The two players in a match are instructed to select the same sequence.

The stream production and overlays obfuscate all of this, as it's doing a lot of UI tricks to clean up and arrange the footage with lots of post-production bells and whistles (win counter, score differential, I-piece drought, etc.) and doesn't actually display any raw game capture footage at all.

It was great to see the kid so emotional after the win and the former champion classy in defeat. As the op said, they are a great example, not just to esport but all competitive sports/games

I've had so many games of Tetris get way more hype/tense than the most frenetic FPS. This was great.

I'm impressed by how "mainstream" has been this piece of news.

Would be cool to see a evo of puzzle games, tetris (NES,TGM) PuyoPuyo, Money Idol Exchanger, and the likes

I had to look this up as well. Apparently, instead of holding down on the dpad to speed up your piece placement, you very rapidly tap down. I'm not sure but I think it makes more course corrections possible when the game speeds up.

I love Tetris, but I can't watch someone else play Tetris. I did love the excitement the guys at Enhance had on Twitter while this was going on though.

Faster Tetris games scale how fast you can move the pieces left and right as the game gets faster, NES Tetris does not (I could be wrong), so once the game hits a certain speed the pieces drop faster than you can move them to the side. This is why the commentators mentioned frequently about Joseph's advantage in using "hyper tapping" that the otherwise more experienced Jonas hadn't learned to do because it allows you to move pieces faster than the speed of holding down the directional buttons which was an immense advantage in high speed levels (and I believe Joseph is historically one of the first to actually reach Level 32 because of this?)

I've been obsessed with Classic Tetris since the amazing Ecstasy of Order documentary came out - I've followed every tournament and exhibition match for the last 6 years, seen some truly amazing moments and watched the level of the game rise to truly insane heights, and still yesterday's championship was something truly special. Jonas is a class act, and Joseph's style is going to change the game in the next few years.

Best of all, got to watch the last day with my 10 y/o son who had no idea what it was all about at the start of the day, and by the semis was yelling things like "What a tuck! He had a two frame window!" :D We had a blast.

Mad skills. Tetris will literally consume your soul if you try to get good at it, sucks for people who don't understand.

That wait for the final long bar was crazy lol. High level Tetris players are unbelievable. And what a genuine reaction he had to winning.

May I recommend the documentary "Ecstasy of Order - The Tetris Masters".

It's was a good lower budget effort when video game documentaries like King of Kong and Indie Game The Movie were popular.

(Edit: I should have looked just a few posts above me lol)
