Electronic Arts has a new shake-up in its Montreal studio today, as Motive studio founder Jade Raymond is leaving EA and a new executive is taking over.

Samantha Ryan, who runs EA's mobile, Maxis, and BioWare studios, will now add responsibility for Motive in Montreal as well. She will oversee all of EA's North American studios, with the exception of Respawn and EA Sports.

This is big news. The title she was working is supposed to be a big deal so her departure is side eye worthy.

Hope she goes back to Ubisoft btw

What happened to Jade Raymond after Assassins Creed 1?

She worked on Splinter Cell Blacklist iirc and it was amazing. I miss her being at Ubi.

EA is great at giving big heads studios and then making them go.

And now Motive will be another Battlefield only developer.

Isn't this similar to what happened with Amy Hennig? I feel for these prolific developers who spearhead a new initiative and then depart before the company has any mentionable output.

EA sounds all kinds of terrible for game developers and artists. It's like where you go if you want to mass produce focus-tested derivative GaaS to gouge consumers. It's like a great chef working for McDonalds.

I refuse to buy any of their products.

This is interesting because she was in part responsible for helping build EAs huge new IP for next gen.....

Wonder what all is going on over there

Was Motive working on anything in particular or were they mostly a support studio for Battlefront and the action adventure Star Wars game?

You don't go to EA, the least creative company around, if you're a big time creative lead. It's never going to work.

From all reports they take care of their devs, but yes the key issue is if you want to make diverse and creative stuff EA's the last company you go to. They're only interested in the safest stuff possible. Even Activision sometimes steps out of their comfort zone and funds something like Sekiro.

That hiring sure produced a lot of content. Good job, EA.

I have nothing against Raymond, she got way too much shit for things that weren't even her fault, but the fact EA made a big deal about hiring her and letting her build her own team and nothing has come of it in several years is just...woof.

I hope she finds a new role soon.

Hopefully they keep/get Motive together. There's a ton of interesting content supposedly in the works up there.

+ A new IP and Plants vs. Zombies

I remember an Interview with her and Amy Hennig when they had just joined EA. Doesn't seem like it worked out that great in the end.

Honest question. What did she do after the AC games? I see her name always pop up with a studio and then a different studio and now she is leaving again.

Her last published game was Splinter Cell Blacklist 5 years ago? And now by the time she finds a new job and publish one it will be even more? Wow.

She's been opening new studios. After AC she opened Ubisoft Toronto and built that up (it's a very successful studio now) and then she left to open Motive Studios for EA.

She's not working on games atm, she's more of an executive type right now.

Produced watchdogs 1 and splinter cell blacklist.

The work at EA was less productive (at least from what we got to see so far) but afaik was motive involved with the SP campaign for battlefront 2

Just googled who Samantha Ryan was, however I'm guessing it's not the first return on the search... If it is, she definitely had a bit of a career change.

Is obvious Miss Jade is coming back to Ubisoft to help in the production of the new Splinter Cell and also the next-gen trilogy of Assassin's Creed: China, Japan and Korea.

Bless~

I had no idea she was still in the game industry. I wouldn't have blamed her for leaving either after the proto-GG crap she went through after AC1. I hope she stays involved if she still has the passion for it.

Well, unless they're doing anything new (SC please), they're just a support team, the only game they made fully is Blacklist.

I still remember when I heard about Jade Raymond joining EA and that her new studio would be helping Amy Hennig's project. Figured we were in for an excellent game in a a year or two.

Would love to know more about what the direction for the company is. The mixture of franchise games vs say something like Anthem just doesn't make sense to me. Also feels like EA should be split in two at this point. Bioware taking the "traditional" console titles and EA working on big license stuff and mobile.

Most Ubi studios are codev studios, that does not make them less successful though. They just released Starlink btw, which is a game made by them. A bit of a lower profile release though.

Anyways, I meant successful more in terms of studio growth and employee numbers. It's quite healthy.

Met her back during the pre AC1 days. Super nice lady and very talented. I wonder where she will move to? Maybe MS snaps her up to head a new studio.

If I remember correctly she founded Ubi Toronto which helped with Blacklist, after which she was supposed to be building their own IP (I remember an interview with her and she was talking about poor representation of women in games, which I think was something she hoped to help address with said new IP), then they seemed to remain a support studio and she left to join EA and form Motive which also had aspirations for a new IP but seemed to end up on support duty for other franchises. I think maybe they were supposed to be taking over on Amy Hennig's Star Wars game, or at least stepping in to develop something in its stead, but who knows what's happening with that given how badly EA seems to be managing its brands this gen.
