So I've got like £20 in Play store credit and it's about time for it to be spent. I spend around 25-30 minutes on the Underground there and back from work, and while browsing preloaded ERA pages is a pretty decent way of starting the day I feel like I could be doing something more engaging.

I'm using a OnePlus 3 so I don't think any of the Final Fantasy ports are gonna be viable, and I probably want things that are made for mobile. Gameplay is more important than story, but I would be down for something with VN like qualities that I can absorb the story over a few journies.

I was a sucker for Game Dev Story in the past, though I also tried Kairosoft's football manager game and got nowhere with it. Are there any recent examples of management Sims done really well? And it may go without saying, but IAP energy bars are gonna be a hard pass unless they're very unnoticeable.

Hope to see some cool games!

If you like baseball at all, Baseball 9 is a pretty fantastic baseball game for mobile. There's no play limit unless you want to skip the games altogether and just level up your players. If you actually play the games though there's no gating.

Rerave Plus.

Music rhythm games in general are ideal for quick commutes; no story to follow or complicated mechanics to remember, and you get to see how you progressively become better each day and week as you keep topping your old scores. Note that some of the games are shitty about requiring an Internet connection though, so check first (Rerave doesn't need one).

Cytus is another good one that doesn't need a connection.

Look into OSRS mobile, seems like a nice game to get things done on a commute and isn't your average bogged-down mobile experience I've played many times before.

Solitarica is great and although there are IAPs for deck unlocks you really don't need them.

Lara Croft Go is still really good.

Out There is a nice space sim resource management game that's a one time purchase. Out There Chronicles is an interesting interactive novel that spun off from it.

Bridge Constructor Portal is fun.

Both Monument Valley games are brilliant.

I have Hitman Go and Deus Ex Go, which are great. There's also Lara Croft Go which seems to be similar but I haven't bought that one.

Don't use any microtransaction items, you don't need them in regular story play anyway. They were added in a patch and didn't originally exist so the games play well without using them.

I'll second the Dragon Quest mentions.
If you like jrpgs, 1, 2 and 3 are fun time-wasters, and I mean that in a good way. They're perfect for a commute. Plenty of dungeons to explore with random battles that won't require your full attention.
I wouldn't play the later games on a commute though, since they are more story-focused.

Rayman Jungle Run and Rayman Fiesta Run. Both $2.99 regular price, afaik no MTX except solution guides which are completely unnecessary. The games look and play just like Rayman Legends, except with controls and levels customized for mobile. Rayman runs constantly, and you have two buttons to jump or attack. Tons of levels, incredible value.

I don't play a lot of mobile games, but imo Aka to Blue is The Best One:

It's a Cave-tier STG. I think the arcade version is bound to be better, but it was mobile-first.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Part Time UFO:

If you're not playing Solitarica, you really should be.

The screenshots intrigue me, although Solitaire has never ever been my thing. Are the things they've put on top of that compelling?

Very tempting, Championship Edition is good stuff!

Cytus is great, but honestly I can't play it in my hand, so to speak. I have to lay it down on a surface and let my fingers do the magic, which isn't ideal for the tube...

This looks fascinating, it's definitely getting a download.

MiniMetro is one of my favorite mobile games. It's gorgeous, addictive and works well in short bursts.

Can also recommend Reigns & Downwell

I got MiniMetro from a Humble Bundle and it was great to mess around with, but I think it's done for me now. Reigns honestly didn't do much for me beyond the first couple hours, though I do lack the patience for finding obscure routes in stuff like that.

Out There is fantastic, but it kicks my ass, I can never make enough progress before dying. I can't remember if I played the second monument valley, the first was amazing so I should scout that out!

Threes.

Always Threes.

Never really got the appeal of it really, I know I'd lose motivation and concentration pretty easily...

80 Days is a neat choose your own adventure game.

It's great, think I've done 3-4 runs total by now!

Part Time UFO was something I was interested in a few months ago, should definitely go buy it. That bullet hell looks fantastically manic as well.

Keep them coming! I particularly like the idea of things with progression, so there's always milestones to hit every session (without it being a grind of course!)

80 days: Very cool cyber-punk adaptation of Jules Verne's classic. Choose your own path around the world, as Fogg's valet, Passepartout. Meet new strange people every time and experience strange stories, Manage inventory and finances by buying and selling items in different cities. Every playthrough is different, depending on what path you take and what decision you make. Inkle's rendtion of the late 19th century world is a lot less Eurocentric than the original book, showing the political tensions of a world that is quickly changing from those days' imperialism. Witness political coups! Play poker on a river boat! Kiss Death in New Orleans! Go on an ill-fated expedition to the North! Participate in a mutiny! The writing and the imagination that went into describing your misadventures is simply lovely. Ridiculous replay value as you try out different paths

Inkle's Sorcery! series: A great adaptation of a classic series of choose-your-own adventure books. You play as a sorceror going out to stop an evil ruler. But things are a lot more complex than they at first seem. Once the second and third games start inserting time travel (which wasn't in the original books) things get really wild. True to form, Inkle's version is updated to be more inclusive than the original, with a lot more strong female characters.

VVVVVV: Classic 2D platformer. Flip gravity to rescue the crew of your spaceship. The touch controls work much better than they have any right to
vvvvvv.0wnc69.png

The Reigns series: Manage a kingdom. Through a series of binary decisions, balance the power of your military, church and people's happiness and your coffers of course. If any of these get too strong or too weak, you will quickly lose the throne and your life. As more and more of your monarchs are replaced by new ones, a meta-narrative starts to unfold. The sequel, Reigns: Her Majesty, have you playing as a queen instead, while the latest entry (released last week) has a really well-done Game of Thrones skin

Professor Layton and the Curious Village: Cute little puzzle game if you didn't play it on the DS
solve-puzzle-015-in-pije3h.jpg

King of Dragon Pass: Classic PC game adapted for Mobile. You control a small clan in the Dragon Pass. Further your clan's interests, follow your clan's traditions to honour your ancestors, or make a new way. Manage a, sometimes unruly, circle of advisors representing different interests in the clan. Make alliances or wars with other clans. Explore Dragon's Pass. Make difficult decisions about life and death. Placate the gods of your people. Participate in drug-fuelled religious ceremonies trying to recreate the legends of your gods. Raise heroes. Lead your clan to glory or ruin.

Ah, good point, never thought of that. I got so used to commuting by trains with fold-out tables that for me it was never an issue.

These days I play rhythm games on my 18" Samsung Galaxy View tablet, which is big enough to rest comfortably on my lap, no table required. :)

Pokemon Go!

And then you shout 'FUUUUCK!' when you're absolutely sure you're getting that Pokéstop but you're greeted with a 'Try again' because the bus is going too fast. :lol

Lara Croft and Hitman Go are both pretty fun, and I enjoyed the Monument Valley games as well as both Altos.

I know this feeling. The bus is the only place I play Pokemon Go and it's still a crapshoot whether you can spin a pokestop - sometimes tapping it before the bus gets there works, other times you have to wait until the chime, and other times it'll just give you try again repeatedly.

Same with gym battles. If the bus leaves before you finish your current battle it usually just boots you after the second pokemon loads.

I'm currently playing Reigns: Game of Thrones but its other two predecessors are fun too if you're not interested in GoT
